Georgetown Post Game Thread - Reed Double Double

Not sure how UConn won that game. Got out rebounded and shot 19% from three.

Does this count as “winning a close game”?

The inbounding from under the basket after the opponent makes a shot continues to be a huge problem. AK should not be the player inbounding the ball as he delays too long and the receiving players start way too late from the top of the key to the baseline. The pass must be quick BEFORE the defense gets to set up. This has been an issue for a while now.

Malachi seems to think when he is in his primary role is that of a scorer when it’s really to facilitate the offense. Prime example was that break away it was an easy two if he just passes it off instead he drives right into the defender and misses.
Malachi’s primary role is dribbler. Lord, pass the ball and stop pounding it on the perimeter.

I’ll say it: team is not well, not bad, not well.

Offense has been completely disjointed at times and we really need Ball to kick back into gear. I’ve accepted his regression in the 3, but he needs to keep making plays, getting to the bucket and all
Spot on... but we all know they're capable of getting in that groove and playing a cohesive office. Oddly enough, we saw a lot more of it early in the season. It's a smidge frusterating watching our offensive efficiency drop off a cliff but i'm confident they'll get that swagger back.

.-.
wouldn't include Smith in that group, botched a fast break today in the first half and he never looks to throw the pass ahead to initiate a break. that's where the 2024 team was so good when they did get out in transition, Tristen and Cam were so go with the outlet passes and passing the ball ahead, the ball sticks in Smith's hands.
Prior to this season Smith has been dynamic in transition. I think it could be lack of reps this season. When the team is sped up they malfunction because they never dictate a fast pace. It’s always reactionary. The second unit with Mali, Ross, Stew are not a half court unit. They need to get stops and convert those into easy opportunities.

I’m not suggesting we completely change our style of play. I’m suggesting we allow the second unit to play at a slightly different pace. We did it in 23, when we’d have Andre, has, Joey, alleyne and Clingan on the court.

KenPom ORtg is 36 after todays game. Defense is fine, our offense is a concern. It has been for sometime now. Ball can't do anything other than shoot pull-ups in the lane. Our vaunted 3P shooting looks like my daughters 4th grade bball games, non-existent.

the last play of the game when AK immediately went and grabbed it and passed to Silas should be the urgency he should always have. I don't see how Hurley has seen AK do the "delayed walk, let everyone setup" tactic the past 1.5 seasons and not think it's a problem.

Solo made enough good plays to justify his playing time but Karaban was worse than Solo, this game.
Tough game for AK. The one made 3 was the only one he took where he was sent. Heck on one of them he threw up a fade away and on the others he was not square sliding to the side while shooting.

Silas was the key to the win, especially in the second half. Real good stat line across the board with 0 turnovers. Kept his dribble alive when pressured, especially working down low and in the paint.
That’s the reason Malachi didn’t see the floor in the second half
And maybe because Malichi sucked today.

Note I like Smith and root hard for him, but he's digressed a bit and needs to play more under control, not drive it into the trees and leave his feet so much and learn to find the open teammate much more quickly and not dribble so much.

Silas is very good. As for a portal pick up, just what we needed.

Solo Balls percentages increase greatly in transition. When he’s not overthinking

Wild, because our OKP last year was 15. Feels like Hurley is forcing Solo and Mullins out there at the same time right now, even though it's pretty clear it's not a balanced lineup when they're out there together.

The thing about this team right now is that it doesn't really feel like it has an identity. It's hard to put a pulse on what they are. They just grind.

And when he's not taking 3's. He's looking way better going to the basket.

Do you all remember the Hurley can’t win close games narrative. He is just in his own crazy way putting that narrative away forever!

A win is a win, I guess. Props to Cooley for keeping his team right there despite a huge deficit in overall talent. Free throw shooting needs attention, I fully expect that to be addressed immediately, meaning UConn wont shoot this poorly from the line for the rest of the season.

How do you address it?

Does anyone in the country have an identity?

Our identity seems to be that we beat everyone.

Losses do not trigger me. Missing free throws and being out hustle trigger the s— out of me. 7 missed FT’s to end the game is dog s——-. The defensive effort the last 5 minutes was dog s—-. I didn’t enjoy watching this game and watching UConn is one my favorite things to do. I will do my best to forget about having watched this peace of garbage efffort.
100% agree…..too many people on this board focused on the outcome, not the trend. This trend is very disturbing.

They really haven’t had much problem inbounding the ball and breaking the press when they get the ball to Demery. Inbounding to Solo has been the problem. TOs twice in a row vs SH

Silas was tough down the stretch. A lot of missed 3s but guys made plays when they had to down the stretch.

Georgetown has also been really bad in close games and we’re kind of fortunate that they've been the poster boys for choking games away this year.

I'm done complaining about a win on the road after watching Michigan lose at home to a bad Wisconsin team but man was that ugly.

One of these ugly games isn't going to go our way sooner rather than later.

Reed is tough inside. We do need to feed him as much as possible. But he needs to look to the wings and kick it out sometimes. Could be 3 or 4 wide open 3s a game.
He also needs to put an effort into boxing out

Georgetown is 0-23 against ranked opponents in the past five years.

Don't be surprised to see major budget cuts fall on this program soon.

How is Georgetown such a fiscal disaster?

They have one of the wealthiest alumni bases and they don't have to pay for football.

Solo’s D had me fuming. He just does not move laterally on defense. If you do that, you shut off paths to the basket. It’s weird. He can clearly move on offense, but on D? It’s like his shoelaces are tied together.
He almost killed them on his own late on D. The back door where he got lost for an and 1 was after we had some momentum, stopped that. Then the last dunk where he fell asleep on a long pass, came flying out to get his guy out of control for an easy dunk. I mean we need to make them pass the ball and kill seconds and he was awful. Then short armed 2 FTs. Quite the last minute or so for him.

Solo Ball might need to be benched for a couple of games.
That's a crazy thing to say. These overreactions provide nothing constructive. Bench him and then what? Start him? Give him 10 minutes off the bench?

Certainly you can offer a suggestion that Stewart could start and Solo helps provide an offensive punch off the bench but not playing him for a couple of games? Nah.

There's a lot of Big East conference play left to get this team to gel. Mullins impacted the game in lots of ways today. I expect him to become an even bigger part of the offense going forward, and there is plenty of firepower alongside him. This team has about 6 weeks to work out the kinks. Firing on all cylinders would make us a real tough out come March/April.

Remember that the 2023 team struggled in both games against Ewing era Georgetown. Have my worries but no panic
Yeah because a team with totally different players had a tough go against teams of totally different players and even different coaches, the obvious conclusion is , well I don’t know what it is but yeah!

I don’t buy the this is a NBE road game either. This was a pretty bad team we played and yet again it was a struggle which we really could have lost. At some point we need to go out and knock the heck out of bad teams.

Late game foul shooting, or lack of it, has caused many teams to go home from the Dance. That needs fixing for sure.
