Geno on Azzi

I think what we saw during the Louisville game was what this Uconn team IS at full strength. Although I hoped prior to the beginning of the season that the hype surrounding Sarah Strong was, to a degree true, I believe she has exceeded even the greatest expectations. Besides her shooting she has provided the strength we've needed so long under the boards. And for those who worry about our team being too young, the players Geno puts on the floor are light years ahead of their ages. This is the product of what has been the trademark of great teams, great coaching.

Ice appears to be more comfortable in the offense as well, and her hands are better in the thick of the paint & against double-teams.

It is coming together just in time for the game vs the Irish in South Bend!

Paige made a curious response to a question at the press interview following the game. The question was quite unrelated -- about which of the WNBA arenas that she has played in is her favorite. She said, "Not this one", and then asked to be reminded of what other WNBA arenas UConn had played in. Someone mentioned the Target Center and Mohegan Sun, and she said she liked those, and something to the effect that "Barclay Center is nice too, but not tonight."

Given that UConn had won the game by a wide margin, this comment seemed strange. Was she talking about her personal performance in the game (2-for-11 shooting but with multiple rebounds and assists)? Or was she talking about Azzi's possible injury? Did she know something about that situation that was beyond what Geno said?

Somewhat unrelated: Even if the MRI on Azzi's knee shows no ligament damage, I will be surprised if she plays against Notre Dame. After a scare like last night, caution seems to be in order. I think the coaches and physical trainers will want her to go through stress exercises on the knee and then some contact practices before she plays again in a game. That could happen (in the best case) against Georgetown next Sunday, but I doubt whether it will happen against Notre Dame.

Sunday a spokesperson for UConn said “I don’t know what the plan was for testing/evaluating relating to Azzi,” and that no update would be issued about Fudd until Auriemma speaks to the media Tuesday before the team leaves for South Bend, Ind. ahead of Thursday’s game at Notre Dame.

Paige stated explicitly that her dislike of the Barkley Center is because she shot so poorly. And she was obviously being puckish.

Well, if Azzi can pull gingerbread, she most certainly can play basketball….:)

By the way, what in the hell is a “gingerbread pulling competition?”
I believe it is an old medieval torture method used on "Ginger bred men". Honestly, I thought it was outlawed long ago. But you know, kids these days.

Scar tissue often tears after surgery. It's scary for the player, but normal. Hopefully, that's all it was.
I hoping that is what it was. To me, viewing the video, it looked like what caused her discomfort was stubbing her toe. That has caused me mometary discomfort in my knee after surgery for a meniscus tear.

If Azzi is cleared by the Medical Staff there is no reason she can't play against Notre Dame!

I might stand alone on this, but I think that Geno will proceed with caution here and not play Azzi. The ND game (away in a hostile environment) will be difficult at best, very intense, physical and fast paced. I feel we can be competitive without her, and should it be a loss, will not hurt this early in the season as everyone else will also have a loss by year end. I expect she will continue to play with limited minutes until March and, finger crossed, will be able to go full out in the tournament.

Azzi posted on her IG story an hour ago doing a gingerbread pulling competition. Probably grasping at any little thing for a sign, but hopefully that is a good one that she is feeling good today.
She should not be allowed the "pull" gingerbread or anything that might strain her in any way,
in an abundance of caution (I've been wanting to write that forever).

If there is medically nothing wrong, why is caution involved?

We’ll likely know tomorrow when Geno has his press gaggle prior to the team departing for South Bend.
I'm not so sure about this. Geno is usually not very forthcoming about player injuries. Wasn't the status of Azzi with her two previous injuries, 2022-23 season and last season, almost non existent for quite a while after she sustained them?
Not saying that is related to now, just throwing it out there.
I am guessing that the team practiced today and we won't get any news on her (or anyone's) participation. Which is normal.

I believe the school released a statement Sunday stating there would not be any updates until GA’s Press availability on Tuesday, at the earliest.

While I agree that Geno may not provide details on Azzi’s health, a reporter will ask about Azzi’s availability to play against ND, and Geno will say yes, no or maybe.

I agree with ERWUC65 one hundred per cent. Azzi should (and will ) be held out, with limited play, until the end of the season. Let the knee rest awhile (hopefully she is not injured). We want to be top notched in March and ready to rumble. We can forgo Azzi now and build up Morgan and Allie!

No way.
If her knee is that bad then she shouldn't play. If the concern is this extreme from the team then just sit out the year.
This all shouldn't be just for the glorification for UCONN. The kid wants to play. She signed up to play. If she is cleared she will want to play.

They can't ignore the Doctor's just because some of us may or may not be scared.

This thread gives insights into the mind frame of various posters, their risk tolerances, their various levels of optimism and pessimism. What they saw or thought they saw. Little else.

Sometimes you just have to sit and wait. Not always easy, but that is where we are. You would think we would be good at it by now.

Taffy pulling?

The most heartening sign to me (as others have posted) is that no ice was applied to the knee as Azzi sat on the bench.

As far as holding her out or holding her back until March, I'm at a loss trying to understand that. She just sat out a calendar year. She wouldn't have been cleared to play unless she was deemed medically healthy. Every athlete in a team sport or tennis* risks injury every time he/she takes the court or field or pool. It's a cost of being mortal.

* I suppose golfers and bowlers can suffer back injuries and what not. Same with water polo-ers and equestrians.
