In a NY Times poll published today, Geno Auriemma was fourth in the rankings of "most admired" sports leaders.
Geno followed (in order) Steve Kerr, Dawn Staley, and Steph Curry.
You can go to the Times website to read details. As the article stresses, this is a purely subjective opinion.
Very interested to hear what Boneyarders think of this list. Why do I suspect that most of us would rank the Husky coach higher, especially than the relative newcomer and kinda grumpy Ms. Staley.

.-.
Go to any UNBIASED sports program and ask who is NO 1 and you will find out it's Geno way above others. Go to Uconn Nation and over whelmingly it will be Geno. IMHO I would say that there is NO ONE that will ever match his coaching record lifetime achievements on the court.

This is not about the “ greatest coach.” If that were what is being considered, it would be unanimous for Geno.

It is “most admired” which is a more opened ended matter. Dawn is admired by many as an Olympic & pro player AND as a coach. Additionally, she is admired for empowering black female coaches, challenging the NCAA on disparate treatment of male/female treatment during “March madness” and her voice on various other social issues.

I am not in anyway trying to suggest that Dawn is a better coach or better person, merely that she id highly ADMIRED

“ coaching record lifetime achievements on the court.” I agree completely.

It's the New York Fishwrap. Of course, Dawn is ahead of Geno. What a waste of newsprint.

Our goal with this list was simple: We asked a bunch of people in North American sports to rank the five leaders they most admired in 2025.

We picked the phrase “most admired” because it is intentionally vague. You don’t have to know someone to admire them. You can also admire leaders for different reasons: The way they communicate, the way they handle adversity or the spotlight, and, of course, their success.

That’s the great thing about leadership: It’s subjective. What works for one person might not work for someone else.

We left it to each participant to determine what they admired.

For those who can't open the link:

What WBB folks were among the 116 people The Athletic asked to compile its list of the top 40 "most admired"? Included were: Tara VanDerveer, Rebecca Lobo, Monica Wright Rogers, Lindsay Gottlieb, Laura Harper, Adia Barnes, Muffet McGraw, Carolyn Peck, and Michael Cooper.

What WBB folks were on the top 40 most admired list?

2. Dawn Staley
4. Geno Auriemma
9. A'ja Wilson
17. Napheesa Collier
18. Nneka Ogwumike
23. Becky Hammon
38. Breanna Stewart
Others receiving multiple votes: Kara Lawson, Caitlin Clark

The only thing I know about #3 Steph Curry is that he the male wannabe of Machine Gun Molly Bolin.

The poll is intentionally vague in definition: 'We picked the phrase “most admired” because it is intentionally vague. You don’t have to know someone to admire them. You can also admire leaders for different reasons: The way they communicate, the way they handle adversity or the spotlight, and, of course, their success.' ...

'We left it to each participant to determine what they admired. We also did not have any rules against voting for people you worked with or played for. The leaders just had to be active as a coach, player or executive in 2025'

In looking at the people polled (there isn't a complete list) it is quite diverse, but appears to be weighted towards basketball - men's/women's/college/pro. There were 52 people receiving multiple votes - the top 40 listed and analyzed - and a total of 116 voters (580 total votes) with no mention of if individual voters ranked their votes.

It appears 'immediacy' was perhaps an unintended consequence of 'active as of fall 2025' which was when the poll was taken and with the intention of making it a yearly event. Sort of a 'who do you admire right now' bias.

Like so much of the modern connected universe, it feels a lot like click bait in the form of 'objective' research.

(In order to rank the top 41 (as there was a tie for 40) and have 11 more multiple vote getters you would need a minimum total of 945 votes from 580 actual recommendations, without including any one off vote getters and assuming each of the 40+1 tie ranked each only received one fewer vote than the previous vote getter.)

I'm glad someone posted the article directly from the NYT to get background on how the poll was conducted.
For myself, the fact that those responding to the poll are all men and women who are themselves involved in sports, makes Geno being 4th most admired even more noteworthy.

I watch only WBB but not MBB.
So very honestly I do not know who Steve Kerr is. And even my neighbor who does not watch WBB knows who is Paige Bueckers.

Need to also stress it was "5 leaders" they admire.

Whether you agree with him much or not, Steve Kerr has been an admirable leader, he doesn't throw folks under the bus, is very forthright, seems to do things the "right" way, and shares his political opinions forthrightly, no excuses., using his position as a pulpit. I only know much about him at all because he is an Arizona alum and gets a bit of extra coverage out here.

Geno finishing fourth shows the elite company he is in as someone admired by folks in the same area of life (sports).

I, too, am glad that the article link was posted here, though I thought that we weren't supposed to do that. Maybe we're just not permitted to quote an entire media piece. Long-time posters are chary of rattling the BY cage for fear of public admonishment. Brrr.
