My wife is a cage supervisor and cashed a winning ticket for over $160,000 for one of the regular betters at their race and sports book.

Never made it to the Derby but I was at Pimlico for Secretariat in ‘74.

Oddly. I find it's funny that it seems as if many folks on the BY find it fun when the long-shot. The underdog. The unlikely. Wins.
Except when they come up again our girls at UConn.

In 1977, at the end of my senior year in college, 4 of us piled into a car for a road trip to the Derby. I put what was at that time a significant bet of $20 on the favorite to win. I don’t remember what Seattle Slew paid. But it wasn’t much. Seattle Slew was the undefeated, prohibitive favorite who went on to win the Triple Crown. Nonetheless, it was a great time.

I dislike races with a packed field like this one. I suspect it accounted for the very fast half mile as none of the favorites wanted to be buried in the back. At one point the winner was 3rd from the rear. The overhead video showed how truly great it was the way Rick Strike naked his way through the field and had the rail to put the race away.

I don't follow racing as much as I once did, so I had not heard of Mike Manganello. He did a masterful job.

The other Mike, Mike Smith, had better retire soon, he's over 50 and tempting fate.
