I didn’t want to forget and post after the fact.

Gandy is currently with her Irish team prepping for the FIBA U20 tournament that will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria July 6-14, per her AAU coach on Twitter. Links to all U20 games are available at the link below.

Team Ireland looks a bit height challenged. There's a few 6-footers, but it kinda looks like Gandy and bunch of littles. I hope they're speedy. It will be up to Ugwah and Hickey to give Gandy some front court support. Gandy's also the youngster on the team.

Apparently, Ireland is playing a warm up tourney in Sweden, the Nordic Championships. Ireland beat Iceland and Denmark to get to the championship game but lost to host Sweden, 93-69. Here are Gandy's stats from the tourney. Note the offensive rebounds :)

Before anyone asks, the games are available on the Nordic Championships site but you have to pay to see them - in Swedish Krona.

Was Sweden just 1000% better? The 9 TO stat makes me think Ireland was incredibly outmatched, considering Gandy only turned it over 2 others times before then.

If I had to guess, I’d imagine Ireland has weak guard play and they tried to force the ball into the post where Gandy got swamped. And Sweden’s probably taller than Ireland. It would be good to see a video of that game.

.-.
Here's a link to the box score. Tilda Trygger, a 6-6 NC State signee and one time UConn player of interest, is on Sweden's team.

I also liked Gandy's two-point field goal %: an average of 60 % with 63.6 % against the winning Swedish team. GO GANDY!

Excellent numbers for Gandy, and she came off the bench (at least against Sweden - I assume she was not a starter?). Such incredible experience for her. Playing against talented opponents her own age and pushing her to compete at a high level.

BTW against Sweden, Tilda was a starter, but Gandy had better numbers all the way around (except TO's). I wonder how the battle "looked" as they squared off against each other...

Sweden is ranked 43rd. Ireland is ranked 59th. They are in different EuroBasket tournaments.

Ireland’s starting guard Sara Hickey played only for 2:42 minutes. Gandy, backup center, played the 2nd most minutes (27.59 minutes) and had nice stats except for the 9 turnovers.

If the turnovers were due to poor entry passes by the guards, then Gandy/Ireland can feel solace from the fact that the U.S. U18 squad had guards that made horrendous post passes.

I'm looking forward to the FIBA U20 WOMEN's EUROBASKET 2024 DIVISION B in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Go GANDY.... Get you "IRISH" up!!

The important thing is that she is getting experience playing with and against older, bigger and more experienced players.
It will be good experience, but this is the " B Division " and there are only so many 6'5" players.
I will have to check but I believe Gandy's age is "older" than the typical player in the Class of
2025 recruit/ UCONN commit. No?

Ireland played Greece in a friendly yesterday and lost 55-59. I have no idea how Gandy did as no box score was kept. The next friendly is on YouTube at 10:15 am today at the link below

NOTE: THE FIBA WEB PAGE has the Ireland game at 6:00 AM for Saturday Morning July 6th.
The Opponent has also been changed from Switzerland to Slovakia. I could not
find a roster for either team, i.e. no information on relative height for the Slovakia team
. Gandy's Team is in the " A" group: Ireland.
Czechia, Switzerland, and Slovakia. This is a fifteen-team tournament. We'll be
starting with a "GROUP PHASE". GOOD LUCK GANDY!! GO IRELAND!

First Quarter Ireland 25 Slovakia 10
Gandy did not start. Came in at 5:10 and had four
points five rebounds one foul and one steal.
Sloppy game for Slovakia, Ireland with some
speed and a transition game . Gandy at the top of
the key with good SCREENS!

Hard to tell how good Ireland is. There transition game is
working and they get a lot of Bunnies. Slovakia is weak
in some many areas that it is hard to judge how good either
team is. Gandy with 2 points at the start of the 2nd period
then a foul and sat down.

HALF TIME IRELAND 48 SLOVAKIA 21
GANDY MALOU MAMEL : 12 minutes ( due to
two fouls early ). Gandy was 5 for 7 and 10 points ( 71.43 FG %)
Eight rebounds : five offensive, three defensive,
One Steal, Efficiency 16 ( #1 on the IRISH TEAM).
#14 for Ireland is Michelle Ugwah from MOREHEAD
STATE. She is 6'0" and jumped center. Looks
taller than she is but wide shoulders. So, Ireland
has two Centers/Power Fowards: Michelle and Ugwah.
Ireland's coach is using his full bench so game stats
may not reflect talent of his starting 5 and regular rotation.
This game is OVER! SLOVAKIA IS DISPIRITED NOW AND
GETTING SLOPPY. Nothing drops for them from off
the rim. Ireland's rim shots go in rather regularly and
their transition game is working, MULTIPLE BUNNIES!
We'll have to see what the rest of the competition looks
like. Fairly good coaching by Ireland. Refs play calling is
" unusual" at best.

ODDS and ENDS: Michelle UGWAH had 8 points listed as a Power Forward
Other USA college players: Lucy Coogan 182 cm ( approx 6'0") from Caldwell
University in Caldwell, N.J. Amy Duggan 5'7" did not play in first half a guard
from Hillsborough Community College, USA.
GANDY IS LISTED as 195 cm, 6'5" ( FIBA heights tend to be accurate) and
her BIRTHDAY IS: DECEMBER 30, 2005. Most Irelands U20 team was born
in 2004, so Gandy is ( approx ) the third youngest on the Irish Team.

Thank you for getting up early so e could get a game report

Third Quarter IRELAND 69 Slovakia 42
Gandy with third foul for "holding", sits down again.
Gandy with 10 points, 10 rebounds ( 5 OFF, 5 def)
two blocks ( one nice one at 3:30 of the third Q)
Two Steals and efficiency of 20. Gandy is
often double and tripled teamed so hard to
judge what she would do with if she had one on one or
"only" two defenders!!!

Final Score IRELAND 91 Slovakia 61
Gandy stats: 20 minutes and 8 seconds
17 points, 8 for 10 shooting ( 80 % ) NO THREE
POINT ATTEMPTS.
13 rebounds ( 6 offensive, 7 defensive)
three fouls, three blocks, no assists,
two turnovers, two steals, Efficiency : 30.
Next up Switzerland tomorrow, Sunday at 8:30 AM
The Swiss are even smaller than Slovakia.
Tallest players for Slovakia were 6' 2" and 6'1".
Switzerland has a 6'0" PF, a 6'0" F, and
a FIVE FOOT TEN INCH "CENTER"! Well done,
Gandy. Ireland has HUSTLE, all down the bench.
