Game Week-> UConn v. Illinois (9/7/19 @ 3:30p on CBSSN)

I could argue that Randy chose the best approach against Wagner. Uconn had the superior team. The fumble, INT and botched 4th down was a 28 point swing. Playing conservative backfired because of the turnovers.
This week things are different. I’d like to see us attempt to keep them off balance. It’s not the best team that wins. It’s the team that plays the best. Being ultra conservative would be like not even trying to win. And that is unexceptionable.

The problem with ultra-conservative run game plans is statistically they are more likely to fail to score than a pass/run balanced offense. The odds of a penalty occurring increase and the odds of a turnover increase as sheer function of number of snaps. Run based drive require many more plays of shorter yardage gains with a need for more first downs. Getting chunks through the air, decreases the probability of failure... assuming you can pass.

Freaking incredible that UConn's head coach doesn't realize this, but here we are.

This was huge issue for me his first go round. When you go and bring him back, you can't get mad after the leopard has showed his spots. The weirdest thing was thinking he and Lashley could actually work.

I laughed so hard at Pal's post the other day wondering if Randy will play conservative...its been 14 years at UConn! We! Know! What! He! Is!

Out of pocket so won’t be able to consolidate weekly press conference tweets again:

When we had Dan Orlovsky, our offense was totally balanced. The same people who are constantly knocking the program for its inability to bring in good QBs then don't think twice about saying we need to throw more.

Oh, so all it takes to be balanced in his offense is a guy who gets a decade in the NFL, that's a good realistic standard we can definitely build from.

Bringing in good QBs would seem to be the answer. Can't have schools like Buffalo and UMass bring in quality college QBs and have us struggle so damn mightily to pass the ball. No says they have to be 4 stars. They kid Buffalo had last year Tyree Jackson i think was his name was outstanding. It could be that a kid sees a Lance Leopold type offensive system and finds that more appealing than an Edsall type offensive system.

Yeah really. Can't go out and get Drew Willy type that throws for 3k yds?

Ill go on record and say Beaudry will throw for more than Pindell did last year.

FWIW - Edsall coached teams seem to play offense tight....fearful of making mistakes...rather than loose and confident.

I'm glad Edsall was not impressed with this OL vs Wagner. Yeah, they did okay and some of the running lanes were big for sure, but this was a game where they should have been dominate and it didn't happen. Plus, their pass defense was just not good enough. Beaudry didn't have great throwing lanes or too much time on many snaps. Sloppy pocket.

They had two turnovers and a TO on downs deep in Wagner territory. You just can't have that happen when you're playing to limit possessions. I thought the offense was really good with Lashley and Shirreffs. That's just not Edsall's cup of tea and i for one no longer expect it will ever be.

And when you have a great dancer like Pindell in 2018, you mask a lot of play calling "tightness" by the fact he can pull it down and rip off a 15 yard gain whenever he wanted too / needed too.

They brought a simple power O to the Wagner game. They will have to abandon the simple O for deception to compete vs Illinois.

Pindell could not execute the passing game that Lashlee brought to UConn which is why he didn't last the first game against Holy Cross in which UConn trailed 20-7 at the half. Pindell is a great athlete and he could scramble and run, but he was not a good passer. Many of his runs last year were not designed runs and skewed the running plays vs passing plays stats.

The Wagner game is not indicative of what UConn will do on offense this year. Why? We had a first time starting QB in which 2 of his starting WRs were out as well as Zavier Scott, the returning player with the most catches last year. Edsall even said they changed the game plan with the WRs out. Sure, Edsall will run more than he will pass and he wants to keep his defense off the field, but let's see what happens this week.

Jim, you read way too much into my post. All I am saying is that last year with Pindell scrambling 1/3rd of the time or more, you couldn't always judge if the O was playing "tight." Pindell's legs didn't allow for plays to develop. Pindell's legs also generated one of last season's chicken/egg debates; is Pindell scrambling because that is the best option or is he scrambling because of the O line is leaking pressure? I think it was 50/50 myself (I know - kind of a cop out). Nowhere am I suggesting Pindell was a good passer.

As for last week, we ran a basic power O. Line up and push forward. I'm not really impressed by the notion that our top two WR were out given we were playing a middling FCS squad after all. Randy and Guifre really need to open it up vs Illinois. Prove that without Dunn and Lashlee they can create a dynamic multi faceted offence. A scheme that optimizes the given talent.

Press clippings: Rod Smith looks back at Akron & previews UConn

>>On UConn's defense: "I've been watching them. Multiple schemes that they run. They jump between and 3-man and a four-man front. As we look at them, I think they do a good job. They're well-coached. It's a different coordinator now so I don't look at last year's stats or last year's film. We're looking at other stos that they've done. I anticipate them giving us a different bunch of looks. He's had a great coaching career."<<
