Many years ago there was an excellent coach you may have heard of. His name was Paul "BEAR" Bryant. He knew how to put his players in situations where they could succeed and execute. Alabama was not integrating their football team and there was strong opposition from their fan base to do so. Bear played USC who had a multitude of Black athletes. Even though Bear Bryant was one of the greatest coaches who ever lived he could not make up for the talent base of the teams that had Black athletes as well as White players. He got KILLED By USC. Hawk, don't ever forget there is no substitution for talent!

Sam Cunningham was the star running back that day for USC. Jerry Claiborne, a former Bryant assistant and head coach at Virginia Tech, Maryland and Kentucky, famously said of the game, "Sam Cunningham did more to integrate Alabama in 60 minutes than Martin Luther King did in 20 years."

Sam Cunningham recalls USC's historic 1970 win over Alabama

I could argue that Randy chose the best approach against Wagner. Uconn had the superior team. The fumble, INT and botched 4th down was a 28 point swing. Playing conservative backfired because of the turnovers.
This week things are different. I’d like to see us attempt to keep them off balance. It’s not the best team that wins. It’s the team that plays the best. Being ultra conservative would be like not even trying to win. And that is unexceptionable.

The problem with ultra-conservative run game plans is statistically they are more likely to fail to score than a pass/run balanced offense. The odds of a penalty occurring increase and the odds of a turnover increase as sheer function of number of snaps. Run based drive require many more plays of shorter yardage gains with a need for more first downs. Getting chunks through the air, decreases the probability of failure... assuming you can pass.

Freaking incredible that UConn's head coach doesn't realize this, but here we are.

This was huge issue for me his first go round. When you go and bring him back, you can't get mad after the leopard has showed his spots. The weirdest thing was thinking he and Lashley could actually work.

When we had Dan Orlovsky, our offense was totally balanced. The same people who are constantly knocking the program for its inability to bring in good QBs then don't think twice about saying we need to throw more.

Oh, so all it takes to be balanced in his offense is a guy who gets a decade in the NFL, that's a good realistic standard we can definitely build from.
