It sounds like they were pretty banged up in their last game and they think they will be much healthier for UConn. HIs comments on the QB were odd. It sounds like multiple QBs are banged up…but all can play but may have some limitations.

-> Without mentioning specific things right now, all of them have some type of day-to-day with whatever they’re dealing with underneath their name. Whatever that looks like, maybe it inhibits one of them from doing something, but another one can do something [else]. You could see multiple quarterbacks in a game because of what they’re capable of, health-wise. I won’t know that, probably until we get closer to the end of the week… PJ [Crayton] had stitches when he went out. He’s fully cleared. He’s one on the [depth] chart that really has no restrictions. Everyone else, we’re day-to-day. How close can we get them to full reps as we get to the weekend will probably determine who gets the nod and what set of schemes do they get the nod in. But we’ll be prepared. Whatever they’re capable of, we’ll figure out what they can do best. – Rice Football head coach Scott Abell on the state of the Owls’ quarterback room <-

Am I crazy for not minding watching a mud bowl (or turf equivalent) Saturday? Not that it would give us any advantage as the passing game is humming and Rice is a run first team, but what is a season without some weird games thrown in. I have full confidence in this run game to control and win a game and a defense that is improving week to week. Most important is getting a win, but I would not mind this team being able to showcase some versatility this week.

We’re double digit favorites on all the computers. Do I mind weather increasing the odds that this game is a real struggle? Hell yes. Of course I do. I want to come home for a 3 game homestand at 6-2 on a five game winning streak. Don’t need to see muddy uniforms at the risk of that.

What the lawyer said. UConn’s defense has struggled against the run (every time BC passed in the first half was like doing UConn a favor) so it’s already a less than ideal matchup. Now add wet conditions that are more likely to hinder a passing attack (as well as defensive pressure) and you have a recipe for an uncomfortably close game.

We have had two weird games. We lost both in OT. I’ve had enough excitement. I’d rather just win the games we’re supposed to win with minimal stress.

I think we've had four weird games and lost two in overtime. Ball St and Buffalo should have each been double digit wins.

Not sure why he didn't resonate at the college ranks. Aaron Turner was a highly touted recruit. He was Caleb Williams #1 target playing together at Gonzaga High School in Wash DC. "A wide receiver for head coach Randy Trivers at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. ….Tallied 32 receptions for 687 yards and eight scores.... Main target for QB Caleb Williams… Also rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries in 12 games … First Team All-Conference… Offensive Player of the Year…" His parents were wonderful. I think he headed to Cincinnati against their advice, stalled out with the Bearcats and moved on to Rice. His 2025 Rice Stats are 21 Rec, 136 Yds, 0 TD, 6.6 Yd Avg. This is his final year.

I think Aaron is a cautionary tale about keeping your focus on where you are. He was a high potential player for us. But he was off before he got near that potential. Having Turner as his QB didn't help. I met his dad art the Myrtle Beach Bowl, I agree, good guy.

Game Notes for both teams and media info updated in first post above ^^^

thx for the info - confirms my suspicions about him.
Literally a non-factor in the Rice offense.
Not sure why there's concern about him, here.
Hopefully our players/team doesn't have this attitude when it comes to this young man... He's talented... He's a vet... and he can indeed play solid football... Let's be ready for him...

We’ve had nearly close to perfect weather all season. I have some concerns about playing in wet conditions, but UConn should always build their team for the elements. I think Rice has a good coach, but Mora is better. Let’s go UConn!

If I were a betting a man, I’ll take the under.

According to Google, Rice still plays at Rice stadium (site of Super Bowl VIII) and the stadium has field turf.

I'm not overly concerned about how the rain will impact our passing game (it should hurt DB's more than it hurts WR's) but it could hurt our secondary if Rice has a decent passing offense.

Wind is a different story entirely as that limits the amount of deep field the defense needs to cover and QB arm strength becomes far more important. I don't know enough about Rice to have any clue if excessive wind helps or hurts us.

I worry about two things in this game…the offensive scheme of Rice and UConn being over confident. I hope the win at BC doesn’t lead to a let down going on the road against a G5 school.

If UConn wins this week, it will show this team is for real and focused and should finish out strong.

I have faith that Mora will have them mentally ready.

They do not

honestly i have never seen UConn play in truly bad weather. would have loved to see an old fashioned muddy game!
Too bad it's just plain old turf.

I've really enjoyed watching youtube vids of the old 2000's UConn big east snow games at the Rent!
  • BCS races, BE standings in the balance
  • a primetime ESPN night slot with top notch camera/mic/production (like ACTUAL ESPN, not espn+ or cbssn)
  • Block C's on errrrrrrrthing - not a smiley husky in sight
  • UConn in a power conference with something to play for
  • and icicles everywhere, even on the FG posts.

That's UConn ASMR for me, lol

Yup, this is a really important test for us. We got gashed by BC’s run game in the first half, and Rice runs it as well as anyone. Combined with the weather and QB injuries, I doubt Rice throws it much this week. Hopefully Mora and Brock have our defense up to the task

Per Circa….UConn is favored by 10.5 and O/U is 48. Am I the only one who would take Rice and the under? It still says a 90% chance of rain in Houston.

Everytime something seems obvious…you quickly find out why the lines are where they are..but It’s tempting. And… I hate rooting for the game to be close…and for low points. I would rather root for a blowout and more points.

Bad weather means a lower scoring game IMO... I say 24-13 #Rollskies ... Hope our D wakes up by the 2nd Quarter and can hold things down more than we anticipate...

You can tease it to UConn +1.5 for @ -450.

I think we will win, so that is the safe bet to me.
