Their coach use to be at D3 Washington & Lee where my son plays. They specialize on Triple option run so need to have one guy on QB while someone trails the guy in motion •. Abel is a very good coach and wins everywhere he has been.

Does anyone have any info on their injured quarterback? I believe he was injured in their last game.

Side note: Not sure if this was mentioned in another thread, but, our old friend Aaron Turner (former UConn Husky, who, IIRC, had a kickoff return for a TD for us when we played Clemson) is on the Rice roster... His stats indicate he's doing what he used to do when he played for us ... Somebody we probably need to keep an eye on... Pretty sure he'll come ready to play.

Brian Brewton was the KR you were thinking about. Aaron Turner was probably our best WR in '22 when we shockingly went 6-6 before he bailed on us (although the biggest catches of the year were made by the larger Canadian whose name escapes me at the moment (against Fresno and Liberty) and Jolly (against BC). He had good acceleration and speed with the ball in his hands, but had alligator arms when asked to make a catch in traffic.

Winnipeg Bomber WR Kevens Clercius

Thank you. Can’t believe I couldn’t remember his name. It annoyed me no end when we were losing game after game in ‘23 and Clercius, who made those two huge plays the year before, couldn’t get on the field. Glad to hear he’s playing pro ball in Canada.

80 degrees and a 75% chance of rain is predicted as of now. The temp is probably about right. The rain is far from certain. I live in Dallas and when they say 75% in Texas it’s more like 25%.

Thanks for clearing that one up... I know we had a tone of 5'10 and under WR/RB/Slot type guys back then... Got them confused... Looks like Rice is doing that nowadays...

tbh i was never impressed by either brewton or turner. Brewton has an extra gear, as shown in that KR touchdown to open the 2021 clemson game, but if the conditions weren't right (which they almost never were), he didn't show much. I take Cam Edwards 10000000x over brewton.

Aaron turner also was not anything special, to me. I suspected he would flame out at Cincinnati, which it apperas he did if he's on the Rice roster. We should account for him, if he plays, sure, but i wouldn't worry too much about him. (hoping i don't eat these words later, though i really don't see him having a "breakout" game)

of those old backs/receivers, I liked Davontae Houston the most - he still couldn't touch Cam Edwards, but he had some impressive runs for us, at the beginning of JM's tenure. I liked him, but I didn't miss him after he left.

Now - Nate Carter was GOOD. closest to Cam Edwards, though I still give edwards the slight edge. Was sad when he left to Michigan St, but I understood; he earned it.

I guess i'm trying to say... I am super happy we have managed to keep cam edwards. He is 100% a P2 running back.

Not sure why he didn't resonate at the college ranks. Aaron Turner was a highly touted recruit. He was Caleb Williams #1 target playing together at Gonzaga High School in Wash DC. "A wide receiver for head coach Randy Trivers at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. ….Tallied 32 receptions for 687 yards and eight scores.... Main target for QB Caleb Williams… Also rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries in 12 games … First Team All-Conference… Offensive Player of the Year…" His parents were wonderful. I think he headed to Cincinnati against their advice, stalled out with the Bearcats and moved on to Rice. His 2025 Rice Stats are 21 Rec, 136 Yds, 0 TD, 6.6 Yd Avg. This is his final year.

thx for the info - confirms my suspicions about him.
Literally a non-factor in the Rice offense.
Not sure why there's concern about him, here.

Coach Abell on @4:00 mark > Rice QB availability discussed:

It sounds like they were pretty banged up in their last game and they think they will be much healthier for UConn. HIs comments on the QB were odd. It sounds like multiple QBs are banged up…but all can play but may have some limitations.
