GENERAL COMMENTS:

Well, it is finally here! The game that once was the fiercest rivalry in WCBB is now but a shadowy reminder of the most anticipated game by fans season after season. Gone is the venerable Chamique Holdsclaw; Gone is the legendary 2003-2004 recruiting class of Candace Parker, Alexis Hornbuckle, Nicki Anosike, Alex Fuller, Jasmine "Dolly" Wiley-Gatewood, and Sybil Dosty; Gone are the three "meeks", Chamique Holdsclaw, Tamika Catchings, Sameka Randall. Who could forget Diana Taurasi just wanting to punch something orange? I will never forget UConn capping a 35-0 1995 season by beating Tennessee 70-64. In 2002, a record crowd of 29.619 fans showed up at the Hartford Civic Center to watch UConn defeat Tennessee 86-72. And who can forget the fan frustration when Candace three it down in 2007 on her way to scoring 30 points, as Tennessee beat UConn in Hartford, 70-64. The sweetest moment came in 2003 by way of Diana Taurasi when she tied the game with a three-pointer in overtime. The most bitter moment came when Semeka Randall scored the game-winning shot with 4.4 seconds remaining in 2000. Etched in the minds of the fans are those legendary coaching match-ups between Geno Auriemma and Pat Summitt. Finally, the breakup of the rivalry in 2007 occurred when the series was cancelled when Pat Summit accused Geno Auriemma of cheating in the recruitment of Maya Moore...the tension was palpable. Yep, the Tennessee / UConn rivalry will forever be enshrined in history as one of the most memorable in the history of the sport.

The modern-day matchup of these two teams lacks the emotional content of yesteryear and more aptly can be summed up as a mid-season out-of-conference game between two top 15 teams. Tennessee is averaging 79.4 points per game while holding its opponents to 60.2 points per game. UConn is averaging 90.2 points per game while holding its opponents to 50.2 points per game. UConn is averaging an incredible 40-point margin. Despite Allie Ziebell's record-setting 10 three-pointers against Xavier this past week, both teams are averaging approximately 9 three-pointers per game. Tennessee really distinguishes itself in its ability to rebound the basketball. Tennessee is averaging 42.7 rebounds per game. UConn's players will need to box out their assignments if they wish to limit Tennessee's presence on the glass. Tennessee averages 14.7 assists while UConn averages 24.4 assists per game. Tennessee averages 15.1 turnovers while forcing its opponents into 21.6 turnovers per game. UConn averages 13.1 turnovers while forcing its opponents into 25.4 turnovers per game. Tennessee gets 11.9 steals per game, which leads to 25.6 points off turnovers. UConn averages 16.0 steals per game, which leads to 35.3 points off turnovers.

Tennessee has an RPI of 8; Its strength of schedule is also 8. Tennessee's Net Ranking is 16, and its defense is ranked 23.
UConn has an RPI of 1; Its strength of schedule is ranked 7. UConn's Net Ranking is 1, and its defense is ranked 1

In short, UConn is WCBB's juggernaut, sitting at the top of just about every metric there is in the sport. Thus should be a tough, hard-fought game with Kim Caldwell and her staff putting their coaching bonafides up against Geno and his staff's. UConn will need to make shots and limit Tennessee's advantage on the glass. If UConn consistently brings the defensive pressure and doesn't rush their offense, they should win this one by mid-third quarter.

Mia is averaging 12.1 points, 2.1 three-pointers, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. KK is averaging 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.7 steals, and she is hitting .6 three-pointers per game. Pauldo is a spark plug who can shoot the three, defends well, and takes care of the basketball, only committing 1.2 turnovers per game. ADVANTAGE - EVEN

BENCH:

This is difficult, especially in the absence of a pregame injury report. However, assuming our usual bench is intact, I see the advantage as follows.
Tennessee will bring: 22.6 points, 16.6 rebounds, 2.3 three-pointers, 5.8 assists, 5.2 steals, and 2.0 blocks in a collective 93.1 minutes per game
UConn will bring: 36.4 points, 14.8 rebounds, 3.5 three-pointers, 9.2 assists, 5.2 steals, and 1.7 blocks in a collective 86.7 minutes per game. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

COACHING:

Kim Caldwell is in her second season as the women’s basketball head coach at the University of Tennessee. She was announced on April 7, 2024, as the fourth leader of the Lady Volunteers during the NCAA era.

A rising star in the profession, Caldwell has quickly forged a reputation as an elite head coach at three different stops now after making her debut at the game’s highest level as the skipper of the all-time winningest program in women’s hoops at UT. She previously led NCAA Division II Glenville State and DI Marshall to championship seasons with a high-octane approach on both ends of the floor.

Simply put, Caldwell is a winner. In nine seasons as a head coach, she has compiled an impressive 241-41 (.855) career record. Those numbers include an astounding 157-21 (.882) mark in conference games. Along the way, her teams have earned berths in nine NCAA Tournaments, and she directed those squads to one national championship, two NCAA DII Final Fours, seven conference championships and five conference tournament titles.

Statistically, her teams have excelled in scoring, three-point shooting, offensive rebounding and steals. As a head coach, her squads have led the nation five times in scoring, finishing second twice and never placing below fourth in points per game. Her squads have been the top team on four occasions in three-pointers made per game, never placing lower than fifth. In steals per game, Caldwell’s units have finished below fourth only once (2024-25).

As good a coach as Kim is, she will be taking on the best of the best in Geno, but Geno also has the benefit of an all-star coaching staff in Associate Coach Chris Daily, Jamelle Elliott, Morgan Valley, and Tanya Cardosa. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

INTANGIBLES:

UConn will be essentially playing this game at home at a sure-to-be sold-out People's Bank Arena in Hartford, CT. UConn is averaging over 90 points per game, and they have the number one defense in the country. They are at the top of nearly every metric in WCBB. They have great talent, experience, and will be up for this game. ADVANTAGE - UCONN

SCORE:

UCONN - 85

TENNESSEE - 71

Great analysis. I am watching Tennessee now playing against Mississippi State and they play a bit out of control. Their half court execution on the offensive end is not as clean and do a lot of pick and roll and jacking up a lot of contested threes. I see the slight advantage callout on Cooper over Azzi, but if Azzi gets back into her groove and shows up like we know she can, I see her topping Cooper easily.

Fun one: matchups make this seem closer than the score will be, or at least I'm hoping it will be. One of those "The Sum Is Greater Than The Parts" things, where team defense will carry the day for UConn.

.-.
Just finished watching the Tenn/ Miss St game played at Tenn. Tenn. shot 32%,went 4-21 on 3's, 15 turnovers and had 20 fouls. To me they were not co-ordinated and played sloppy. The fin GO HUSKIES!!!!!!al score was 77-62. With our defense we should hold Tenn,to 50 points and even with key players not available should score 85. My prediction, we win 85-50.

Good job as usual sensei!
Statistics show it should be close, but reality steps in when the Lady Vols have to face UConn's #1 defense!
I don't see a recent 3-point problem for Azzi in this one as she'll be sky-high at "home"!
Hopefully UConn will have it's normal 12 healthy players!
Thanks for the work!

Thanks, Sensei. Another excellent analysis.

And I don’t think the Miss St result should force a rethink of your MoV. Tennessee is not a very disciplined team and can be beaten by middling teams, like them. But they are also capable of bringing a much more focused effort to a big game. The team Miss St beat may not resemble the one that comes to Gampel.

I think a lot depends on whether Blanca and Serah are available. Jana will struggle against Spearman. And I don’t think there’s anyone on Tennessee’s roster who can really match up with Blanca, or Sarah for that matter.

But I suspect the biggest problem for Tennessee will be our guards. KK Ash Kayleigh and Azzi, and Allie too, will choke off their offense. Geno has his press flexing like a boa constrictor. Of course, Sarah and Blanca will create chaos too.

The irony, I suspect, is though we’re likely to get Tennessee’s best effort, the Huskies are ready for a challenge. This game may provoke a significant blowout, and I won’t be surprised if we win by more than 20.

Great analysis except I don't agree about the PG position. Paulido had 3 turnovers against Louisville when they pressed her and they don't have a KK. I think KK has the advantage over her because of her defense and also due to the fact that her offense has been improving every game and she runs the team well.

These analysis's are great , but the one key element that is missing is our team defense. A defense that shows up each and every game, regardless of how a player is shooting.
We press, switch , anticipate, like no UConn I have ever seen. Our opponents on offense look like they are fighting in the middle of a swarm of killer bees.
Also, the biggest stage in college basketball is the Final Four. That's where legends are made on the way to a winning a National Championship. Not sure Talaysia Cooper has won the MVP for a Final Four like Fudd. ADVANTAGE: Fudd.

Spearman got very early fouls in the State game and if Sarah can drive to the basket and put some early fouls on her that would be really helpful.

Pauldo is no match for KK. She had some success driving to the basket with little defense in the 4th quarter but she won’t see that against UConn.

The biggest weakness I see in Tennessee is that they full court press, other team will pass through to break the press and they become very vulnerable in transition. Their transition defense over all was pretty terrible against MS State. They ran a zone a lot against MS State and left their best 3pt shooter wide open a lot

I was hoping to see an improved Tennessee team from when I had watched them earlier in the year but I didn’t really. I don’t think this one is going to be close. +25 UConn

Tennessee is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team based on what I have seen and read about them this year. I think the key is to get a fast start and win the first quarter by a significant margin. They don't seem to handle getting behind by a significant margin well, losing offensive coherence and abandoning any semblance of a half court offense. However, if the Huskies let them hang around and get some confidence, a very difficult game could result. Personally, I think UConn's discipline on defense and their movement on offence will be the difference. I also expect better scoring from the get go as compared to the Xavier game as long as they play UConn basketball in don't get caught up in the hype that will be put on this game.

Excellent analysis..hopefully Azzi gets out of her slump soon but even if she doesn't she does a lot of other things to help the team
Uconn's #1 defense should bring a 20+ win
Rebounding even or better would be nice to see

Actually kind of disappointed that Tennessee did so poorly. If they had been better and didn't out of the top 25, it would have helped our resume. Not that our resume needs a lot of improving.😁

KK Arnold, 5'9" - Junior Guard vs Mia Pauldo, 5'6" - Freshman Guard - Mia is averaging 12.1 points, 2.1 three-pointers, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. ADVANTAGE - EVEN
You got an “eep” out of me on this one, Sensei. KK is a national defensive POY candidate and is currently tied at #1 in the country for assist to turnover ratio (A/TO). And she’s a junior, not a freshman on the road at the #1 team in the country. Mia Pauldo is a fine player but not yet KK’s equal

I enjoy these preview posts a lot! The one thing that I think would be a good addition: shooting percentages.

TN shoots 41.2/30.0/65.9 with Alyssa Latham (17.8 mpg, 4.7 ppg, 51.1%) the only player shooting above 46% in the regular rotation. Their highest % 3 point shooter is Mia Pauldo at 33.6%.

Uconn shoots 52.7/39.3/75.7 with 7 players in the regular rotation shooting 53% or better and 4 above 57% topped by Sarah's 60.2%. (NB Azzi is not counted above as she is down to 47.7%) For three point shooting, Uconn has three players shooting above 40% led by Allie 10Ball at 48.2%, and they have another 3 shooting at or above 33.3 led by Sarah at 39.1

Talking of the glorious past I am remind of the diss that was said of Pat's coaching philosophy (by some of less than civil fans) of 'chuck it up and rebound like hell!' This may be why they get 42.1 rebounds per game and yet have only a 3.3 MOR (margin of rebounds.) Uconn with their measly 37.2 rebounding average has a 5.7 MOR. (NB if you consider change of possession as what defensive rebounds represent then TOs equate to additional rebounds. TN has a 119 margin that translates to 6.61 MOT per game - Uconn has 270 margin or an MOT/game of 12.27.)

TN played the easy portion of their conference schedule to rack up their 6-0 best in SEC record before last night with the only highlight win at home against KY. They still have road games against SC, OK, and LSU and home games against Vandy and TX. They also play at #17 OleMs and #23 Georgia.

I still think they retain a top 25 spot at the end of the year unless they truly implode because none of the back end of the top 25 have looked very steady.

COACHING:

. . .As good a coach as Kim is, she will be taking on the best of the best in Geno, but Geno also has the benefit of an all-star coaching staff in Associate Coach Chris Daily, Jamelle Elliott, Morgan Valley, and Tanya Cardosa.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN
That about sums it up for me. I keep shaking my head wondering how a team with as much talent as the Vols lost to A&M Mississippi State.
