France beats Belgium in OT, 81-75 to make it to the gold medal game. Gabby played her typical “a little bit of everything” game for France, including scoring 9 crucial points in OT. She’ll see some very familiar faces (Stewie & Pheesa) in the championship game. It should be a great basketball atmosphere with the US facing France in Paris for both the men’s & women’s gold medal games.

Gabulous has a Bronze from Tokyo. She'll add another Olympic medal to her collection! Not bad for a former high jumper!
Thank you, gentlemen, for starting a well-deserved thread for Gabby. Throughout the women's event, I've enjoyed watching Gabby play as much as anyone else, the U.S.A. players included...

Her WNBA career has been checkered due to her decision to play for the French and all that has brought on, yet I compliment her for her dedication through the past few years, and now congratulate her on virtually willing her teammates on to the title game.

Gabby is just a joy to watch, and awfully easy to cheer for... while my heart will be with the Americans in the gold-medal game, I'll very much hope Gabby plays a really good game and leaves the Olympics justifiably proud of herself and her French team.

What I've really enjoyed is the refs letting them play, and not trying to show how clever they are in spotting ticky-tack fouls. These games really have such an enjoyable flow , which is sadly lacking here,in the college game and the W. And I think there is less bitching from the players, in general, which drives me crazy here. They bitch on every call! Oh, and what's more fun than watching Gabby Williams play. Such a shame that we can't watch her here anymore.

While most of the US players are comfortable playing the more physical style of play you typically find at the international level, I do think that Pheesa in particular has struggled somewhat during the Olympics trying to adjust her game, which relies more on finesse. She’s had a little trouble finishing through contact, which doesn’t always get called a foul in international play. That’s why Nika never fouled. ;)

Yes that’s true. But Gabby has continued to refine her game to the point where her decision making and execution on the court is nearly flawless. As great as she was at UConn, Gabby is now an even better passer, defender, ball handler and scorer.
Her game is not flawless, but her improvement as a professional is what should happen. If you're a good enough player for basketball to be your job, and you work hard at that job, improvement should follow. Success depends on the competition which is why Gabby has been less successful in the WNBA. She is perfectly suited for the international game.

I did say “nearly flawless.” Gabby’s limited success in the W is largely due to the fact that it’s hard to be a starting guard in the league without being a really good shooter. Gabby is really good at just about everything else.

Yesterday, Gabby played a fabulous game against a very good Belgian team that played the US very tough earlier in the Olympic Tournament. Down the stretch, the French team was much better off when they let Gabby initiate the offense as opposed to Marine Johannes, the former Liberty star.

Heading to the finals, I’m rooting for the US and hoping that Gabby has another wonderful game.

“I always make the joke I had no idea how to play basketball when I got to UConn,” she laughed. “I was just athletic and when I got there I didn’t know how to play basketball and it was a rude awakening for me.” -Gabby Williams to Kurt Schroeder KOLO News 8, Reno, Nevada.

As someone noted earlier, in High School although she did played basketball, she split her time with another sport; she was really more of a Track star (Reed High School is a Track and Field powerhouse here in Nevada). When a girl can walk under the high jump bar upright and then go jump over it, it is pretty impressive. But she wasn’t just a high jumper, she ran All American level high hurdle times as well. She was a gazelle!

Geno didn’t recruit her because of her extensive basketball skills. Rather, that she had the ability to transition her skills into something really special.

I actually think a team like the Liberty would be great for Gabby, she would get a lot of playing time, and fits their system well.
Sabrina would play well alongside Gabby.
Gabby would be a great replacement for Sloot, with a lot better defense.
And with all the offense the Liberty have Gabby wouldn't have to be a big scorer, but could pick her spots.

I wouldn't rule out Gabby having the opportunity to be a ring chaser for the tail end of the season with several teams including the Aces and the Liberty. I haven't done the math, but a team doesn't have to have the full season cap room to add her, more like half the minimum or so. That is particularly attractive with teams carrying only 11 that had some cap room but not enough for a 12th player at the start.

If she is willing to take a modest pro-rated salary she might be a good missing piece on a contender.

I believe that under the WNBA rules, Gabby and any other foreign player is not eligible to play this late under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. I don't know if it has a grace period due to the Olympics being played this year.

Loved watching her play live when they did her homecoming game at Lawlor Event Center in Reno. She was so smooth in her actions. Thought it was kind of funny that Kia was the player of the game, but Gabby was the main draw. To this day it still is the largest crowd to ever watch a women's college basketball game in the State of Nevada.

i gotta disagree.

her play already was next level at uconn.

she did have to adjust to her new position thereafter, i admit.
Gabby performed magnificently at UConn because her over the top athleticism allowed her to play inside. Her speed and ability to elevate set her apart. But she came to UConn with her ball handling skills being underdeveloped due to her HS injuries and that went for her shot making abilities too. I lost track of her after she graduated and 2 years later I stumbled into her playing in Turkey I think and she blew me away. Also blew away the other team. It was a play off game and I thought I was watching DT in Gabby's body. They couldn't contain her and she sure wasn't missing.

I believe that Gabby was involved in 2 losses at UConn, both National semi-finals in 2017 and 2018. She did not play in the loss at Stanford, which was the only loss in the 2014-15 championship season. The team was undefeated the following year. The following 2 seasons, the team went into the NCAA tournament undefeated. Some players have had incredible team records at UConn, but I believe Gabby is the only one with a perfect regular season and conference tournament record. In fact, Gabby NEVER lost a college game in regulation.

I know that an MVP is chosen--LeBron won it yesterday, and A'ja likely will win today--but is there an all-tournament team?

Overlooked stats for Gabby in her junior and senior seasons at UConn: 190 and 191 assists, respectively. Those numbers as a point-forward. She also grabbed more than 1000 rebounds during her 4 years at UConn. What a player.

I feel that Gabby Williams is the Best all-around athlete to ever play for the UConn Huskies. I also enjoyed her every game @ Uconn.
I bet that Geno has been thrilled watching his players play in the Olympics.

Jay Bilas called her the best all-around player in college--male or female--when she was a senior.
