I feel that Gabby Williams is the Best all-around athlete to ever play for the UConn Huskies. I also enjoyed her every game @ Uconn.
I bet that Geno has been thrilled watching his players play in the Olympics.

Jay Bilas called her the best all-around player in college--male or female--when she was a senior.

I don’t know if any WNBA team holds the rights to Gabby, since she’s been out of the league for the last 2 seasons. If that’s the case, and Gabby wants back in the W, she’ll have a lot of options, particularly after her outstanding performance in the Olympics.

Congrats to the US for battling it out to get a historic gold medal. It was not an easy task to be down by 10 in the 3rd and having the crowd be (mostly) against you.

Congrats to Gabby for putting it all on the line and absolutely balling out. France played tough and should feel proud about being only inches away from OT.

UConn players once again representing well on the biggest stage.

I know that a lot of comments are forthcoming regarding not having Clark on our National Team, but the real question should be why isn't Gabby a member of our National Team. She was the best player, by far, on the floor today and she should have been selected for our National Team for the Japan Olympics. There wasn't another player in college nor is there anyone on the planet who has her rebounding, speed and scoring abilities all in one player. She took it to us and France would have won if anyone of their other players had a decent game. Give credit to our woman who had the ability to pull this game out and bring home the "gold". But as stated above, Gabby was one of my favorite UCONN Players of all-time, and as with the rest of the posters, she still is.

Thank you, gentlemen, for starting a well-deserved thread for Gabby. Throughout the women's event, I've enjoyed watching Gabby play as much as anyone else, the U.S.A. players included...

Her WNBA career has been checkered due to her decision to play for the French and all that has brought on, yet I compliment her for her dedication through the past few years, and now congratulate her on virtually willing her teammates on to the title game.

Gabby is just a joy to watch, and awfully easy to cheer for... while my heart will be with the Americans in the gold-medal game, I'll very much hope Gabby plays a really good game and leaves the Olympics justifiably proud of herself and her French team.

That's not entirely true. The WNBA prioritization rules also has affected her situation. In this year's case, yes because the French team didn't want any of their players commiting to the WNBA, but this isn't the sole reason.

With the way the current WNBA rules work, I suspect Gabby will never play again in the W. I am sure she makes more playing in Europe for the full season and has her summers free for French National Team commitments and rest.

I understand the W trying to force players to commit fully to the league, and it is opening more roster spots for Americans, but it is also keep some great talent from playing in the US. Messeman, Williams, etc aren't leaving their European teams before their championships get played and those happen after the W deadline for reporting.

Looks like she can, along with Messeman and Johannes.

So free agency part two can begin. All three of those players could be difference makers and a final piece for a championship contender. Pretty sure Gabby is a free agent but not sure if the other two are or not or if their former teams still hold their rights for this season.

Considering there is significant gnashing of teeth about roster spots being so limited that many new rookies find themselves on the outside looking in, I don't think the W is short on players to take up roster spots.

For better or worse the league made a rule and players have to make the choice that works best for them.

I believe that under the WNBA rules, Gabby and any other foreign player is not eligible to play this late under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. I don't know if it has a grace period due to the Olympics being played this year.
I thought I read somewhere recently where that the WNBA had a extended a grace period to both Gabby and Marine Johannes due to the Olympics?

In this thread, only by you so far...

A'ja Wilson says hello.

No doubt about it, though, Gabby was amazing and put the French team on her back to keep them in contention, particularly at the close of the game.

France beats Belgium in OT, 81-75 to make it to the gold medal game. Gabby played her typical “a little bit of everything” game for France, including scoring 9 crucial points in OT. She’ll see some very familiar faces (Stewie & Pheesa) in the championship game. It should be a great basketball atmosphere with the US facing France in Paris for both the men’s & women’s gold medal games.
Thanks for posting. Gabby brought back Many fond memories at UConn
