UConn does retire numbers, but the criteria is membership in the Naismith Hall of Fame. So far, Ray Allen (34) on the men‘s side and Rebecca Lobo (50) on the women’s are the only retired numbers.
Thanks for the clarification. That’s a good policy

I thought there was a time when you had to ask a former great to wear the same number. For example, to wear 3, you had to ask DT, etc. Has that gone by because of not knowing which prior great to ask?

I don’t think there is a requirement or tradition. I think it’s done out of respect. Now who each player respects is anyone’s guess. “Times they are a changing”

So another words the numbers 3 and 10 on the woman's side should only be available at the max 8 more years.

Not necessarily. Look how long it took Lobo to get into the hall after she left UConn. Her final year in the WNBA was 2003. Admittedly Lobo never had the “shine” that Taurasi or Bird had, so that might shorten their wait time a bit.

How come that table lists Meghan Gardler as both #14 and #22?
She actually changed her number from one season to the next. I believe that CD once got a technical foul for submitting a lineup card on which the wrong number was listed for her.

Looking at the full list of numbers above, there are some other interesting observations:

1. Did we all forget so quickly that Megan Walker wore #3 as recently as a couple of months ago? Must be a repressed memory for all of us.

2. No one mentioned that Megan (Pattyson) Culmo wore #33 when she played.

3. In addition to Kia Nurse, Kelly Schumacher also wore #11. She might give Kia some competition for the distinction of Best Eleven.

So not counting 53, 54, and 55 which have never been worn, it's number 40
that has gone the longest without use.

I believe that if both Sue and DT both play as a team member of U.S. Olympic basketball in Tokyo next year they will be enshrined very quickly after eligibility. Heck being members for 4 straight Olympics and their records in both College and the WNBA should do the trick, but a fifth should be icing on the cake.

With only 36 (35 at UConn women's) numbers to choose from retiring them needs to be done carefully!

Well, if we have 24 players elected to the Basketball HOF then we are going to have to start worrying about that.
Bird and Taurasi are locks. I would also say Maya.
That being said the Naismith HOF still has only a few women in it.
