Fort Worth rims

another factor besides the early morning shoot arounds and the early morning talks with the press, the new rims and new sight lines may be that UCONN uses a Spalding ball during the regular season and now they use a Wilson in the tournaments. Different ball= different feel.

Isn't that the excuse that one of UConn's opponents used years ago after getting beaten badly?

Pretty sure the Wilson ball was introduced two games ago at the first round so shouldn't be a big issue for anyone. All sports balls have a wax or something on them out of the box, even new baseballs which have been rubbed with a special dirt, you see pitchers scrubbing with their hands. Little harder for anyone to do that with the size of a basketball and if they are introduced at tip-off they are beginning to be 'broken in' by the end of the game - if they are then retired and an new one introduced for each game ...

I do think sight lines are a big deal - every arena feels and looks different, and a chance to get practice and warm-ups in is a big part of figuring that out as empty vs with fans also changes things. But rims are a hug part as well.

The pressure of the moment, meh. That stuff wears off pretty quickly after the tip, and these teams have dealt with that a lot during the year. E8 with 'FINAL FOUR' on the line is maybe a step up, and Final Four with all the distraction is a different matter, with concentration before the game maybe a problem - an advantage for most Uconn teams as the players have experienced it all before.

Of course I respect Geno’s opinion about the problems with the tournament. He’s the foremost authority on anything WCBB. The coaches should be consulted before any large decisions are made. I’m all in.
Why is Geno disrupting the universe by talking about the rims. What is the Berraism, “ half of the game is 90% mental”. You say you’re a player: do you think a player needs to think about the rim, when they pull up for a jumper?
He’s trying to change things! If enough coaches start talking about this, perhaps we might see some changes.

.-.
Three-point shooting percentages yesterday

South Carolina - 71%
OU - 30%
TCU 38.9%
VA - 44%
TX - 33.3%
UK - 33.3%
Michigan - 31%
Louisville - 21%
After all the clanks off the rims in the first day, they probably are ready for refit soon! Wonder if they use the same game balls or open new boxes each game?

No practice time for getting sightlines.
That's exactly the point. The background, the court, the angle views from different spots and now you throw in stiff, brand new rims which are not broken in with only a few games.

I thought Geno was just being cranky but the theory followed true again tonight:
Michigan: 2-15 from 3
Texas: 3-19 from 3

Both teams shoot around 33% from 3 on the season and most of the looks they missed were wide open

Now that all the games are over I can comment: Those rims and that ball were diabolical. That court also seemed suspect. Everything about this region was weird. I've never seen so many shots rim out, balls get stuck, shot rim out.

New everything isn't the best. I feel for the NCAA committee because they are so out of touch they think fresh rims, fresh basketballs and a fresh court is the best method. This is not tennis.

The "tight rims" are to some extent to blame ad literam, but they are mostly a catch-all term for several contributing factors: poor line-of-sight in a cavernous arena not designed for basketball, overly bouncy balls, and unacceptably lacking shootaround/practice times at ungodly hours.
