Great day for Nowell (much needed as he’s been almost out of their rotation). Shot 7-8 (5-5 from 3) for 19 points in 15 minutes. It was a blowout win over 1-10 Niagara, but it’s a good start to hopefully a potential turnaround for him.

Mahaney also with a pretty good night - 15 points on 5-9 shooting (4-7 from three).

Just because nowell needs to grow into the college game doesn’t mean anyone was wrong on him. Literally First 10 games of playing any real time at the college level. Kid has the skills… let’s wait til he’s played 2 seasons at least.
He needs 4 seasons at mid major level to see if he has any skills.

Agreed... but Nowell looked totally overmatched in his time. He could barely handle the ball, looked slow, and couldn't guard a chair. We literally played a Hass on one leg, a 2G in Aidan, or McNeeley at the point over Nowell because he just couldn't do it. The fact that Nowell is barely a part of mid-major rotation speaks that he was not a high D1 player. Diggins was the same, and with the way CBB works now, there is zero time for development unless the player is willing to sit and bide his time over taking $$ somewhere else.
Norwell was going to have to take a significant pay cut to remain at UConn. Coaches were very unhappy with his limited ability and his handlers. Our coaches realized he was a low mid major prospect. Good luck to him and his family.

Darius Adams is now shooting 32% from the floor and 25% from 3 on volume. I think he will end up being a good player, but whoa on those shooting #s.

Bundalo actually played the other night... 8 scoreless minutes. There was no information coming out about whether he was injured or why he wasn't playing, and Chris Beard is nuts, so this is an interesting storyline.

The coaches realized he is a low mid major??????????????????
Wow there's a lot to chew on that statement, I honestly hope you don't believe that statement and it's a joke.

Indeed, a lot to unpack in that post; not that much about No(r)well:

Norwell was going to have to take a significant pay cut to remain at UConn (I have access to specific inside information from the program). Coaches were very unhappy with his limited ability and his handlers (I know what the coaches think, down to their level of their "unhappiness" and negative opinions about both a player's ability and their family and friends). Our coaches realized he was a low mid major prospect. (See previous comment. Add a second denigration but blame it on the coaches). Good luck to him and his family. (Now that I've criticized his ability and family, I'll pretend I care).

Norwell got some great press coverage today in the Richmond Times Dispatch. Leading scorer with 22pts against Rider…I know it’s Rider. Some mention of him coming into VCU with higher run time. FWIW

Nowell’s last two games have been cupcakes, but solid performance. 8 points in 8 minutes 2 games ago, and 19 points in 15 minutes in his last game

Isaiah Abraham also had a great game against Coppin St. 17 points on 6-7 shooting (5-6 from three)

Honestly that came right from our coaching staff members. I wish I could say more but our agreement was conversation had to stay confidential. He got pretty good NIL money coming in . He was not close to the player they thought he would be. Coaching staff did not want him coming back but if he did come back he was going to take a significant pay cut in NIL.

You are totally free to look past whoever or whatever you want. And like all of us, of course he made his bed. That has little to do of course as to whether him having stayed for that year would have made us a significantly better team. Of course it would have. For everything that went wrong in 2012, AO’s plus/minus over the course of the year was significantly better than Drummond’s. If AO played, we might have won the Big EAst regular season.
Lots of things have to fall the right way in order to win a NC - and that was especially true for our 2014 NC team. It's all speculation of course, but I would bet things don't go our way in 2014 if AO had stuck around in 2012-13.

Nowell with a DNP-CD in their conference opener. VCU shortened rotation to 7 guys - got an 89-82 win over St. Bonaventure, but Nowell doesn’t look like he’ll factor in their plans much in league play.

Abraham made a couple early threes against St. John’s - but still basically in a “token starter” role where he doesn’t play many minutes.

Adams had 18 earlier in the week against Old Dominion (6-16 FG, 3-6 from 3). Two assists, one turnover. Now has 18 assists, 23 turnovers in 13 games.

Could have been champions…

Alex played one year more as a senior at Missouri when UConn was banned.

Smith though could have been part of the group of UConn players who have more NCs than Jimmy B.

Closing the books on December and 2025 for our old friends. Here are all of their stats so far

Isaiah Abraham - Georgetown. 19.0 MPG, 6.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 0.5 APG shooting 50.7% FG, 41.7% 3P, 55.6% FT
  • Double digit scoring against Coppin St (17), generally hovers between 4-8 points in other games
  • Has been on a heater from three recently. 9-12 in his last three games
Darius Adams - Maryland. 27.0 MPG, 12.8 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.4 APG shooting 32.6% FG, 27.0% 3P, 74.1% FT
  • Still has the ultimate green light but the shots aren’t really falling
  • Good game against Old Dominion (18 points on 6-16) but REALLY struggled shooting in literally every other December game
  • Shooting splits in those other games: 3-10, 3-10, 1-6, 3-12
Corey Floyd Jr - Providence. 26.5 MPG, 9.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.3 APG shooting 45.2% FG, 37.8% 3P, 74.1% FT
  • Overall not bad but not good. A decent role player on a terrible team isn’t a good place to be
Aidan Mahaney - UC Santa Barbara. 31.1 MPG, 14.9 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 2.8 APG shooting 45.3% FG, 44.1% 3P, 82.4% FT
  • Definitely picked up the efficiency in December minus one terrible game against Utah Valley
  • He had back to back 26 and 30 point games early in the month, and closed the year with back to back 15 and 18 point games. Let’s go Aidan!
Ahmad Nowell - VCU. 12.3 MPG, 5.7 PPG, 1.3 RPG, 1.0 APG shooting 46.8% FG, 41.4% 3P, 70.6% FT
  • Last two games were really good. 19 points in 15 minutes against Rider and 8 points in 8 minutes against American
  • But otherwise not much going. Outside of those two games, Ahmad scored 2 points in 13 overall minutes. DNP in VCU’s win over St Bonaventure yesterday. Doesn’t seem to be a consistent rotation piece
Apostolos Roumoglou - Richmond. 18.1 MPG, 4.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.2 APG shooting 40.0% FG, 24.4% 3P, 66.7% FT
  • Did have 12 points against Elon, but otherwise has hovered around 3-5 points on poor shooting in December. Around 20 MPG seems to be his run rate
Youssouf Singare - High Point. 8.7 MPG, 2.2 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 0.3 BPG shooting 73.3% FG and 60.0% FT
  • Got 16 minutes and 10 minutes in his latest two games (2 and 6 points respectively) but otherwise not much going
  • Outside of those two, 4 points and 7 rebounds in the month of December. Also does not seem like a consistent rotation piece

I just thank you for getting “Nowell” right after reading all the Norwell posts lol.

I think this has been pretty clear for most of the year, but none of these guys would’ve been rotation players this season. Hurley has done a really good job during his tenure of identifying the key guys and retaining them.
