Josh Carlton. But he wasn’t going to get more than 8 minutes a game here behind Sanogo so it’s not like we needed him to stay.

I could never figure this out. He seemed to be a great athlete and good size (6-7). I think you're right. He's closer to home (from VA)
and Ed Cooley could give him the time and patience.

Is it that difficult to figure out? He didn’t play last year. Whose minutes would he take this year? AK? Stew? So he probably wouldn’t have played this year. Maybe he would’ve played next yesr, but then again, I’d expect us to bring in an impact 4. So it made no sense for him to stay and rot on the bench here when he was an instant starter at GTown.

This. He is built in a very similar mold to Stew/Ross but is worse than both. There are no minutes for him.
 
I could see Abraham growing into a really nice piece for a contender his senior year. He’s got the tools to be elite on defense/boards as a versatile wing/forward like Stewart. His teams will always need strong offensive players to surround him with, similar to how we use Ross.

It's puzzling how our staff was so wrong on both Diggins and Nowell even though both were mvp's of the Catholic league.
After learning of how tough life had been for Nowell and how strong a player and leader he'd been in high school I was hoping he would be a great lead guard for us.

Just because nowell needs to grow into the college game doesn’t mean anyone was wrong on him. Literally First 10 games of playing any real time at the college level. Kid has the skills… let’s wait til he’s played 2 seasons at least.

I know he became persona non grata because of social media crap, but the thought we didn’t miss AO in ‘13 while we were starting Phil Nolan is just silly.

We had a good year in 2013, but we had a post season ban. So we weren't going anywhere anyhow

We won it all one year later. For me, it's easy to look past AO. He made his bed

Love to see this with Mahaney. I root for him to do well - he did the best he could while here - and thought there was room for him if he stayed and worked at this game to fit our style. But I get why he left - 100%.

Nowell just didn’t seem to fit in any way with our style of play, Nice to see Abraham do well!

Yep, Mahaney never sulked, he (or his family) never complained on social media, hell, his biggest fan here was positive and didn't make excuses. I'm happy he's doing well back home. I really, really thought he would succeed here.

I never got the allure of Nowell. Even his high school highlights screamed undersized guard who could bully his way to the hoop, a la a million others. Even Taliek was that guy. But Taliek had significantly more quickness and floor general skills so his total lack of shooting ability was too much of an issue.

Adams, despite his shooting woes, has talent, and he'll be a good scorer for Maryland for a few years. Just has to catch up physically.

Abraham will also be a good four-year player for someone. He's the symbol for the type of guy we won't recruit anymore. The days of us taking a top 75-100 recruit and thinking he can learn and develop on the bench are over. He would have never played here, as we would have always upgraded in the portal or had a returnee in his spot. He would not have played this year behind AK, Stew, and Ross, and would've, at best, backed up Stew and whoever else we bring in at the "4" through the portal next year.
 
VCU plays a really bad Niagara team today. Hopefully there are some minutes to be found for Nowell

I don’t think Abraham is playing bad per se. He’s the 5th option in the starting 5 and has a couple decent games to show for it. I think he’ll have a solid career at GTown if they stick with him. Never a star, but a good role player

Singare got a season high 17 minutes last night. 2 points, 2 rebounds in an OT loss

Adams has had a rough start in B10 play. 8 points on 1-6 vs Iowa, 7 points on 3-10 against Michigan

Just a few years ago, if a freshman got into a game and contributed a basket or two or made a play, that would be seen as sign of the players potential. Not so any more. Either produce immediately or your spot on the roster is considered wasted.

Rashool Diggens has a nice senior season at UMass. 17 PPG, 3 APG. But he lasted a millisecond at UConn.

Not saying it's right or wrong. Diggins was unprepared and had serious flaws in his game. Just saying that is the way it is today.

Agreed... but Nowell looked totally overmatched in his time. He could barely handle the ball, looked slow, and couldn't guard a chair. We literally played a Hass on one leg, a 2G in Aidan, or McNeeley at the point over Nowell because he just couldn't do it. The fact that Nowell is barely a part of mid-major rotation speaks that he was not a high D1 player. Diggins was the same, and with the way CBB works now, there is zero time for development unless the player is willing to sit and bide his time over taking $$ somewhere else.

Abrahams is solid for GTown …tough makes the hustle plays & very solid on Defense. He’s basically in the same spot as Ross & Stew

You are totally free to look past whoever or whatever you want. And like all of us, of course he made his bed. That has little to do of course as to whether him having stayed for that year would have made us a significantly better team. Of course it would have. For everything that went wrong in 2012, AO’s plus/minus over the course of the year was significantly better than Drummond’s. If AO played, we might have won the Big EAst regular season.
 
Speculating about why a player didnt hit or a miss evaluation always felt like a fools errand to me. When I look at Diggins and Nowell I saw players that had the right traits to develop into great UConn players. However for whatever reason they didnt develop. It could be a million different things but at the end of day outside of the truly special players we are all reliant on guys getting better every month

Based on HS? Because it seemed pretty evident, immediately, that neither of those two could play here. The coaches clearly recognized it, too. Obviously, recruiting and everything that goes with it is a very inexact science. But there's no way you could look at Nowell, especially post-injury last year, and think that he could play at our level. He could barely handle the ball. You balance that out with someone like Ross, who made mental mistakes, but showed enough physical potential that you knew he could absolutely contribute at some point. That was evident even in his garbage time his Fr. year.
 
Nowell played 8 minutes in an 84-58 win over Niagara - took one shot (a missed three), and ended with two assists.

Had two quick fouls 10 seconds apart in the first half and came out or perhaps he’d have had a little more run. But looks like the 10th man in their rotation.
