Florida post game thread

This loss would be easier for me to take if it were a blow out because I could say that "it was expected". Losing the way they did in the last 2 minutes, knowing that they had a real chance to win, is just really hard to for me to come to terms with. The "what ifs' are numerous in that time period.

Sure we’d most likely just have had to beat Maryland, Texas Tech, Auburn, and Duke or Houston. Piece of cake. Just be happy if Duke doesn’t win.

Yeah, anyone who thinks that's tough loss, I mean it sucks today, but you will be fine next week. The Hurley loss to New Mexico was way worse. They had a 1 seed on the ropes and loss. It wasn't a crushing loss, it wasn't a crazy loss.

That is nowhere near some of the brutal losses that have hit them. I actually don't count the final 4 loss to MSU as a bad loss. Got outplayed that game and you can't get upset as a final four participant. This was a good performance in this tournament considering the seed.

I would of rather had Fresman El-Amin, Kemba, Allen, Okafor, Gordon, Butler, Donyell Marshall and Hamilton. I guess you must be part of McNeeley's family. You are defending him pretty hard. He is good kid just has more limitations than we thought and isn't a great shooter.
 
Rewatched the game - that 3 Clayton smoked a 6’8” AK on the was such a dagger. We were up 2 with less that 3 minutes to go, and he just pulls up in his face. Then we fumble ball next possession to the Florida breakaway dunk and the wheels fell off. All momentum shifts on a dime.

Kid has some balls and was completely un-phased. He's not the greatest shooter but he has a penchant for hitting big ones.

  • The team never had a reliable option that would/could drive it to the rim and hit the contested shot.
  • Overall, the team went down fighting like Husky teams do. Entertaining year. Already checking the Internet hourly for portal updates.

Great point on the high hedge. Not only the stupid fouls 27 ft from the hoop but racing to get back in the paint and not being in a great defensive position results in fouls too often.

The more I see UConn’s high hedge, the more I like drop coverage with the defender going over the screen. I am fine with the defender going under the screen against a lot of guards.

Maybe 10-15% of starting college guards are legitimate threats to shoot a long pull up jumper after coming off a screen and turning 90 degrees. The rest of them can have the long pull up. Don’t design a defense to stop a 25% shot.

Drop coverage makes the screen harder to set, increasing the likelihood of a moving screen call.

I was in the chat talking about the high hedge. Samson was amazing in recovery last night, but it is not something Reed is good at, and it resulted in his fouls often. He should be in drop, but ends up not doing it well/fouling, so not as many minutes. He is a beast on the block, but his lack of opportunities is a main gripe that ive been repeating all year. Cmon he got no low block touches in first seton hall. Gotta fit your x and o schemes to your roster. Also its too predictable and Florida easily slipped the screen to their bigs late before the Clayton shots for 2 good looks. I think Mahaney is another who struggles in this defensive system who will bounce back in another. All that being said, they DID show up yesterday, and competed in a way that we havent seen in other losses. They play for Danny and the name on their shirt, and thats all you can ask.

Do you think if an NBA GM drafts him first round, that he must also be part of McNeeley’s family? Because it’s probably where he’s going to get drafted after playing less than a full year as a freshman. And if not, I’d love to have him back.

There was a clear re-calibration of what was a foul and who was fouling from the first half to the second.

In the end, on this day, we did not have the talent to overcome what was this teams Achilles heal. FTA discrepancy is real and it has cost us in everyone of our losses. Dan Hurley is right for b*tchng at the refs. Stats back him up.

Not having driving guards that could get to the rim equals less foul shots.
Yes, it cost us all season but we shouldn’t have missed 21 3’s many wide open either.

Seemed to be countless times they had the ball with chances to stretch the lead and let UF close the gap keeping them in striking range.

They played the best D we've seen all season long and made some outstanding plays, but simply missed so many open and makeable looks. Even with that, they gave up some critical rebounds on the defensive end, especially off of missed FTs, that were costly late.

That was a winnable game. Great effort. Proud of our team, but disappointed in the outcome.

We didn’t score for 7 minutes. We went as cold as the games start. Alex reverse wasn’t the only issue. I felt bug men fouls were the biggest factor. Reed was gonna eat. But that play at around 3 minutes left when Liam missed the cutting Sam and then forced it too him and turned it over was a moment of note.

Hurts because the way they won is what I thought it would take for us to win but we actually outplayed them and just didn’t make enough shots and they made the tough shots. It was like a combined 15 minutes if 1 fg with the start of the game and the 7 minutes in the second. Lost by 2. Insane.

Loved the flops in the pushed with 8 seconds left. Hurley mentioned to Hass they were pushing off. Did get UF to the line with no time off.
 
I went out to watch the game with a friend, so was spared what must have been an annoying chat. Didn't post on this thread either.

It is pretty simple for me, you make shots or you don't. The team played good defense, more steals than usual, some key blocks and we were fantastic on the boards. Samson was excellent early on. On offense we missed wide open look after wide open look. That's on everybody. As a result we started trying to force feed Reed, which Florida knew was coming and completely shut down. Reed is a bigger black hole than Sanogo ever was, he has to learn how to pass out rather than taking terrible shots.

Even with all of that, Florida missed a ton of free throws and we should have won the game with better execution down the stretch. But the guys didn't have it, and Florida did. That's how it goes. If you told me we'd lose by 2, this game isn't what I would have expected. I'm not disappointed in losing to a 1 seed, I am disappointed in losing that particular game the way we did. But next year is a new season. Let's go.
 
We did already best Florida in this tournament before the game even started.

Proud of the guys for never giving up and fighting to the end there. That was a good team they lost to. The wheels just came off at the end and they couldn't close it out. They just weren't really that team this year. A portaling we go!

If we could have beaten the team that was arguably playing the best basketball in the country the last few weeks, why not believe we could beat everyone else on that list? And did I say it would have been a "piece of cake"? Of course it wouldn't have, but it would have been a legit possibility. SMH
 
I see people bringing up a double flop Hurley apparently drew up where two players flopped at the same time in the same way but I didn't see that, anyone know?

Clayton showed us the value of the high hedge. Without it he would have been bombing threes all game. Samson neutralized his effectiveness (driving and shooting) for a good part of this game. Liam, Alex and Solo were slow to neutralize the slip. That was the problem all season. But without the hedge teams would have killed us on drives to the basket or making open threes because this team was flawed defensively. The early part of the season demonstrated that. Tarris is ineffective with it but leaving him for drop coverage with this teams lack of foot speed would have been worse.

I don't understand the complaints about the high hedge this game when it was a major reason the game was close. I said to myself the second foul on Samson under a minute in the first half was going to haunt us. It did.
