First Day of Games (11/7/)

Emma-Nnopu got the start, but I could see either Nivar or Lepolo replacing her soon. Both have so much more upside.

Great to be watching WBB!
This one is going down to the wire, must be a nail biter.

edit--NAU down 1 w/ the ball, 14 seconds left.

NAU had 3 shots in the last 20 seconds, couldn't get one in. First 2 were good looks that rimmed out, the last was an absolute prayer.

Doesn't tell me much but UCF beat Winthrop 72-32 today. I missed most of the game unfortunately but glad they took care of business in game 1.

South Dakota State faded down the stretch against Creighton. Lauren Jensen was great in the second half. Creighton’s victory against the Jacks will give UConn a better SoS.
Creighton dug in hard on defense in the last 3+ minutes. Great 3pt shooting and excellent player movement. Definitely a real top 20 team. They will be pretty tough. If they had some size.

Wait, Fairfield loses Lou Lopez to UConn and another player goes out and scores 36 points for Fairfield in their opener!
Callie Cavanaugh, a Grad student scored 36 points(highest total of all D1 yesterday) plus 7 rebounds in the Stags win over Brown.

I mean sadly the entire LSU squad can’t show anything because of that schedule

Reese did go 20/10 against her lone matchup vs SC last year. But she is the least of LSUs worries if they want to go far. It’s the others outside of her and Morris who need to prove themselves

Needs to work on free throws
LSU was impressive. I realize the opponent was a nobody but for a first game the team chemistry was much better than I expected. IMO, LSU will be a force in WBB this season!

Creighton’s Coach impressed me, he kept that team together in a hostile environment. Definitely, top 20 in my opinion.

Saw that Diamond Miller was held out of the second half of yesterday's game. Hoping that whatever happened wasn't serious. Pulling for her to have a healthy season this year. And they have South Carolina Thursday night.

Big East goes 8-0 on the opening day of play. Doesn’t mean much but good to see teams in the conference winning the games they should.

Let's see how she does against Tennessee and South Carolina.

She did just fine last year.

20/10 7/19 shooting.

Now, SCar has a lot more to throw at her this year.

Looking at box, I forgot how ugly the Maryland-SCar game was with SCar using Amihere at point and Osuwu having a really terrible day.

She went down with an apparent knee injury, Brenda said they held her out of the second half as precaution, but waiting for further evaluation this week. A height challenged Terps roster desperately needs her to play.

edit--NAU down 1 w/ the ball, 14 seconds left. Entertaining game. ASU is in for a long long season.

Fun matchup between the guards. Junior ASU point guard Jadden Simmons was dominant on both ends of the court. Game high score but her defense and rebounding was really evident.

Senior point guard Reagan Schenck had a double-double including 13 assists. She played the full 40 minutes and really demonstrated her experience and quickness.

The Devil's overcame a three-point deficit in the final minute to hold on and win. NAU coach Loree Payne has to be pleased with this effort. As you recall last year the lumberjacks were in the top 10 in three-point shooting and one of their ace outside Marksman Emily Rodebaugh was one for 12. That's not going to happen much during the season so it'll be interesting how far Payne can take this team.

Huge difference under new coach Natasha Adair. The trademark CTT line change was absent as Adair had a 7 deep rotation. Adair is in a really tough position having gotten the job late she had to fill holes on the roster through the portal. Three of the bigs that Adair brought with her are not ready for prime time and were really not in basketball shape. NAU outrebounded the Sun devils, out hustled the Sun Devils, and if not for the heroics of Jadden Simmons would have lost. While the Sun Devils have a cupcake non-conference schedule I wouldn't be surprised for them to be under .500 entering Pac play, this could be a 20 loss team.

The contrast yesterday with the afternoon game I attended over at Grand Canyon demonstrated an amazing facility perfectly suited for basketball, huge student turnout that was enthusiastic, and a really well produced event.

Over in Tempe ASU Sun Devils played after the men. While there was a huge student turnout they were there to get swag and setting aside those merchandise seekers it was another tiny attendance with a very vocal NAU contingent behind the visitor bench.

Super fun day although I'm a little tired from the drive down and back. It was totally worth it.

In an interesting schedule ASU travels over to Phoenix to play the Grand Canyon Lopes on November 30h. Although the Lopes don't have the size that the Devils present, given the lack of conditioning and the amazing speed that Molly Miller can put on the court I would mark this as an upset special.

This is really hilarious. ASU President Michael Crow said ASU would never play Grand Canyon due to their for-profit status. Another exemplar of the somewhat self-aggrandizing philosophy of the ASU president. Crow was in the news recently for the governor debategate fiasco.

Osborne might not be quite ready to take a supporting role at UCLA just yet. 20 pts/9 reb/5 assists in their season opener. Rice had 12 pts/7 assists. Have Bessoir and Maskiwech ever both been healthy at the same time? I'm thinking no.
Masikewich has basically never been healthy. She played in parts of two games last year, and a total of nine in her career. UCLA has two posts out with injury right now and still was able to field two and three bigs at a time AND rotate them! Crazy stuff in Pauley. All of the freshmen looked pretty good (Rice/Jaquez/Iwuala/Jones/Sontag) against Cal Poly, but the return of Bessoir and the ability of Osborne to play without the ball were the real revelations. I mean, besides having an actual bench.

Last year, the "big" lineup was anytime that Anstey was in, and the small lineup was anytime Anstey was not in. (Anstey is injured currently)

In case I didn’t hint around enough last season there was a reason I was not upset by the transfers of Parrish, Scherr, and Watson. All the best to them … nice people. But…cohesion, respect, and camaraderie are so much part of the culture of a successful team.

I like this years group. Back to playing Oregon ball after a couple of so so years. They will be fun to watch.
Yeah I felt the same about the reasons too, Any solid specifics out there on why the last freshmen group was such a bust. I have heard some low level mumblings but nothing concrete that it was actually chemistry problem and some work ethic issues. This group just seems different in a good way. This new group compliments each other well and are fun to watch develop. I forgot how much I missed watching fun basketball. Btw, Northwestern looked gassed in the 4th quarter but Oregon does not lose alot in substitutions.

It's unfortunate as she had a lot of potential coming out of Canada and the OSBA league here. I'm rooting for her big time. I hope she gets the opportunity to play throughout the season.

Enjoyed being at UVA, Coach Mox’s 1st game. 85-59 win against GW, after being down by 4 at the half. All 5 starters scored in double figures. Played a much more up tempo game than during the TIna era. Players seemed really motivated. Totally different feel from the last few years. Sam Brunelle looked ok (10 pts, 5 boards), but seemed to have difficulty creating her own shot. Mir McLean didn’t play due to injury. She appeared to have a soft cast on her right wrist/hand.

Yall would have lost that game last season.

You need gym rats and I think VanSlooten, Tsai, and Gray are. That is one difference.

Should I be worried that the same Hawaii team that took Oregon St. to the wire just got thumped by Portland?

I thought Jackson State was supposed to be good. They got the brakes beaten offa them by 30 down in Chapel Hill.
