Okay, I can back away from the ledge. Oregon St. ran away from Seattle U. in the second half, especially in the 4th quarter. Couldn't deal with the size of Mitrovic and Beers.

Although now it seems to have been quite some time ago, I remember when OSU was annually one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the country. That definitely isn't the case these days. 2-20 today. If they had been able to knock a few down they could've won by 45 or 50, had to settle for a 36 point win.
2016 was the first year I followed NCAAW and I remember Oregon State making the Final Four and following it up with a few second-weekend runs.

The program has taken a downturn the past few years and has largely faded from national relevancy. It’s a little puzzling because Rueck seems like a good coach and he’s had his share of talent.

I’m on the other side of the country so not familiar with the region but I’ve heard that Corvallis is very difficult to recruit and retain at because it’s in the middle of nowhere. Maybe that plays a role.

To me Corvallis is a classic college town that is not a big city, like many others across the country. Middle of nowhere is definitely a stretch. It's only about 30 minutes from I-5, THE major freeway that runs all the way thru Washington, Oregon and California. It's probably just as close to Portland as Eugene (U. of Oregon) is. I know that perception gets perpetuated, but it's not really true. For middle of nowhere, look at Washington St. in Pullman. Now that is isolated.

I think he lands a couple of good players in a class each year but it may drop off from that. So after a few recruiting cycles the weakness it is in the supporting players. The talent drop off is steeper than what it should be. No dominant point guard recruiting either. But I dont follow it at a level like some others do here, just at a glance.

That is true. It is located in a nice small town with easy access. No airport in Corvallis could be a negative?. Most teams head to Eugene and fly out from there. I don't think it factors in as much for WBB recruiting with the size of the town.

Rueck's best teams were before he started landing highly rated players. Weisner and Wiese were both top 50/60 types, not blue chippers, and the rest of those players were pretty much unheralded. Pivec was fairly highly regarded, but I don't think top 25, definitely not top 10. Hamblin and Gulich are still the best post players he's had, and they were both completely off the radar.

Do you think he has to have a Hamblin and Gulich type post player to run his system? Post players like those two are few and far between. I think that pac-12 across the board has improved alot where you have to have those highly rated players to not miss a beat. He is not going against UCLA, Arizona or Oregon in recruiting as much as I think he should.

Jones was better than either as a Fr. (by a wide margin), but then never progressed before leaving. Maybe Mitrovic and Beers will develop into a fearsome pair on the block. Interesting discussion going on in the game thread on Bennys House. Probably the bigger problem for OSU since the banner days has been the steep decline in 3 point shooting accuracy. As someone pointed out, having Weisner, Wiese, Tudor and Goodman's careers all overlapping probably got OSU fans spoiled. Anyway that was certainly a staple of Rueck's offense in the earlier days. If you can't count on shooters to knock down open 3s, that system really isn't gonna work.

And then their defense doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be either, that's another big problem.

I lived in British Columbia for a while. When you say Hamblin was off the radar, you're not kidding. Her hometown of Smithers is a 12 hour drive to Vancouver. I spent a few weeks there. Beautiful area. And it was only a couple hours away from the Alaskan border.

South Dakota state champs ;)

That bodes well for the Blue Jays. Those are NOT easy places to play in. USD seems headed for a down year, but SDSU has a really good team, and that was a really impressive win.

Kudos to the Creighton scheduling staff for lining up those two games; I hope they’re home-and-homes.

Geez, I wish Pivec would stick with a WNBA team.

Oregon State had an edge recruiting her because it’s the track&field capital of the NCAA. I belive Pivec still has the Washington state high school record for the javelin. She competed in college for a year or two.

Kind of like Oregon finding Ruthie Hebard in a small high school in Alaska. At that time Ruthie who?

I think you‘ve mistaken Oregon State for the University of Oregon. U of O hosted this year’s Track and Field World Championships. Legendary coach Bill Bowerman who helped establish Nike (and developed the waffle pattern sole) was the coach during Steve Prefontaine’s days there. A litany of great T&F stars attended Oregon. Phil Knight ran track at Oregon and has been instrumental in making Oregon a T&F mecca.

Oops, you’re right, huge brain fart on my part. Oregon State doesn’t have much of a T&F team.

Utah Valley jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead against cross state rival Utah. The Utes went on a 25-3 run the rest of the first quarter to get back on track.

Dang it, Washington St. threatening the Pac 12's so far perfect record. Down 15 at the half to San Francisco.

Meanwhile, Utah Valley is going to be hard pressed to crack 30 points against Utah. 69-16 approaching end of Q3. That's a double dose of ouch.

Villanova up at the half, 41-30.
VT over Bucknell at half, 31-23.
Carla was pissed with Princeton defense at end of 2Q. Poor close outs and weak 1-1 defense

Nova comes back to win after Princeton took the lead with Siegrist on the bench, 69-59. Siegrist sparked the rally, ending up with 32 points.
