Ross plays defense well enough that Hurley puts him in at the end of games at D. I don't what you are watching. It's almost like you think you are trying to get clicks.
I’m watching a guy that goes for a head fake. Every. Single. Time.

He’s a matador on defense, I have no idea what YOU are watching.

Thanks. Good article. I know we've only seen snippets of him, and the coaches see them all during practice that we don't see, but I have a hard time believing he couldn't give the team more than Ross is giving.

I taught you how to post tweets. Now I need to teach how to post alternate access links. :) Does everyone know how to do this on their own now?

"For every coach," Faisal noted, "its hard to have an 11-12-man rotation. There's a lot of guys at his position right now, it's hard to make a way in. There's timing for everyone. It's not your time right now. Other guys sat the bench last year, it's kind of a system in place."

Matador is a stretch lol, and I think ross does give good effort, the fact that he has the ability to guard 1’s at 6’7 we gotta appreciate, it’s on the offensive end of the floor that’s hard to watch when it comes to him

I just cannot believe all the people on this board who think Ross cannot defend. There are metrics that show he defends well. Does he get caught biting on pump fakes more than he should, yes he does. But just take the time and watch what happens when he properly challenges three point shots. The man he is guarding does not make them at all and they shoot a very low percentage.

Hurley is the best coach in the country and couple that with the metrics and these arguments about how bad a defenderRoss is only show how little basketball acumen those posters have.

Focus on the negative only. Defense is not a zero sum situation, you only notice him when he does something stupid and that is usually on the ball. So you don’t notice when he is in position doing his job. He does his job or his assignment on defense so much better than Stewart and Ball so that is why he plays more.

Just get over it, he is our best defender you should be encouraging him to stop the mistakes that are easy to see. Because if he stops those he gets very close to being an elite defender. I think we should be hoping he does because it could win us some games over the next 8 weeks.

You asked and I deliver. ;)

Dan Hurley, college basketball villain? Actually, this sport could use more like him

Ross, in my opinion, turned the game against Gonzaga by being able to guard Nemb… last game I do not think it was a coincidence that he enters and we go on a 20-7 run by shutting down his man who was cooking Stewart and Ball.

Without question, as proven by the sub patterns, he is a better defender than Solo and Stew. If he could just stop falling for pump fakes and play with a clue on offense he could be a player.

He just needs to find some consistency and realize every play is not a do or die situation. Just learn play within himself and when the opportunities come to do something special, and they will, take advantage of them.

Defense is not like offense where you can let the game come to you so he has to stay aggressive but in control.

I think the keys to the rest of this season:

McNeeley coming back, Mahaney continuing to play better, Ball getting a little better defensively, Reed Jr getting more low post opportunities and Ross figuring out a way to play with in himself, if these happen, we will be competitive in every game against any opponent.

Those are two pretty big ifs. We are 21 games into the season.

Oh that's all, huh. I don't disagree with that list, in fact I agree with it a lot, but those are a lot of things that have to happen. McNeeley is coming returning, check, and Reed Jr getting more low post opportunities are the 2 that are most in UConn's control. The other 3 items I am not sure will happen consistently but rather sporadically.

Sorry but he is better than Solo only due to him being terrible but he and Stewie at best are equal. Stewie at times does a great job on bigger guys backing him down or trying to but he’s inconsistent. I’ve seen some decent defense on occasion by Ross but even then 75% of time he’s gonna bite, jump and lose his position. There’s not much for me there on the eye test actually his defense is overrated!

Ross's defense has been better lately. My problem with his is his rigidity to the offense. He knows where the next pass is supposed to go, and it's where he goes with the pass. The problem is that teams are learning to overplay and he has to learn it's okay to reverse the ball. He has missed Solo wide open all by himself because he is so committed to swinging the ball around he turns his back to the side he just received the pass from.
Abraham looks like a player for sure. He looked further advanced on offense than I expected to him be. I almost wonder if Hurley is trying to see what he really has in Stewart and Ross with the understanding that Abraham will supplant one of them next year and the other being the odd man out.
