Field Hockey 2017

#1 SOS by a wide margin and #8 RPI

Also wins over Northwestern & Maryland and OT losses to Duke & UNC.

Sorry, but when you go winless in conference play, you do not deserve an NCAA tourney bid. I don't care how good your conference is.

UNC and Michigan both won conference titles today as well. They were fighting to host a regional. Although given that the Heels have been playing Home games at Duke all year (field under construction), I’m guessing it will go to Michigan.

Stanford , St Joes, BU , Delaware, MiamiOH, Princeton also won bids.

And Fairfield upset Monmouth

My bracket guess:

1 UConn* v BU/Miami
Maryland v Syracuse

4 Michigan* v Wake
UNC
v Stanford

3 Virginia* v Princeton
Penn St v Louisville

2 Duke* v St Joes/Fair
Delaware v N'western

.-.
So what do Geno Auriemma and Nancy Stevens have in common besides winning national championships at UConn? They both attended West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Former UConn field hockey coach Diane Wright, who won two national championships with the Huskies, also attended West Chester University. How do I know silly things like this? Many years ago some of my family moved to West Chester while I was attending UConn. Over the years I started to notice that both West Chester the town and West Chester University produced a goodly number of people involved in sports, including the the national championship UConn coaching trio mentioned above.

UConn plays at home versus the winner of Fairfield/Boston University.
Penn State and Delaware are the other teams playing in Storrs next weekend.

6 ACC teams made the 18 team tourney. BC did not make it.
4 Big 10 teams were selected.

The bracket. Duke has been handed a cakewalk draw.

1 UConn v BU/Fairfield
Penn St v Delaware

4 UNC v St Joes
Virginia v Princeton

3 Michigan* v Syracuse
Northwestern v Louisville

2 Duke* v Stanford/Miami
Maryland v Wake

.-.
Shown below with last week's AP rank + RPI + 2 computer rankings.

1 UConn* (1 1 1 1) v BU/Fairfield
Penn St (5 6 6 6) v Delaware (8 8 7 7)

4 UNC (6 3 5 4) v St Joes
Virginia* (4 5 4 3) v Princeton (14 12 13 12)

3 Michigan* (3 4 2 2) v Syracuse (11 14 11 9)
Northwestern (9 10 10 11) v Louisville (10 7 9 10)

2 Duke* (2 2 3 5) v Stanford/Miami
Maryland (7 11 8 8) v Wake (13 13 12 13)

You could make a reasonable case that Penn St & Delaware are the #6 & #7 teams in the country.

I'd much rather have Duke or Michigan's draw. That bottom half is weak.

WHUS radio is carrying the field hockey game today, with John Tuite doing the play by play. A nice surprise. What the heck, the soccer season is over for both Husky teams.

Early in the second half, Veitner gets her second goal of the game to make it 3-1 UConn.

Further confirmation that Michigan is a paper tiger: needs OT to be Syracuse.

I will be stunned if Duke doesn't make the final. They got such an easy draw.

Not to mention UNC always seems to have our number. Our only win against them was that epic penalty shootout in the 2013 semis which finally got Nancy Stevens over the hump to her first title. We thankfully avoided them in 2014 and were able to win another title. They knocked us out last year. I noticed UNC is playing at Virginia even though UVA is seeded lower? Would love for UVA to get them out.

North Carolina is in the middle of athletic facility renovations, and this includes building a field hockey facility. Their old field hockey stadium has been torn down as part of the renovations. Because their home field wasn't available, they played their home games at Duke this season. That is no doubt also why they are playing at Virginia this weekend instead of playing at home.

B10 needs 3 OT games, but went 4-0 on Day 1. Mighty ACC 2-4.

Princeton v 4 UNC @ UVa
Penn St @ 1 UConn

Maryland @ 2 Duke
Nwestern @ 3 Mich
