Since it's gonna be a frustrating and long season for MSOC /WSOC, I'm gonna focus my energies on the stellar Field Hockey program:

2 shut-outs against ranked opponents to begin the season

#4 UCONN 2
#13 Stanford 0

#4 UCONN 7
#14 Northwestern 0

#1 UNC and #3 Delaware lost this weekend so we could see UCONN rise to #2 in the polls. UCONN's next game (9/3) is at a tough #11 Michigan (who defeated #1 UNC).

GO HUSKIES!!!

Problem is they don't play any of the ACC heavyweights like UNC, Syracuse, Duke, Virginia, and Louisville which will be seen as a crime against humanity in the eyes of the committee.

Big road win for UConn field hockey today.

The only ACC team that consistently shows up on UConn's schedule is Boston College. And it seems that when an ACC team does play UConn during the regular season those games tend to be at a neutral site.

Yeah the lack of games against the top 10 is an issue.
They did play a scrimmage against Syracuse (won 3-1).

A game against traditional power Maryland would be good and not very far to travel.

Based on their scheduling, I'm assuming the lack of the power ACC teams on the schedule isn't due to a lack of trying but more so those teams are afraid to schedule UConn. They don't need to based on how the committee seeds the tournament at least in recent years anyways.

Veitner is unreal. She's becoming the Diana Taurasi of field hockey.

Based on UConn's success the past several years - the onus isn't on UConn if these teams don't want to play the lady Huskies. They beat on each other in the ACC so why add another loss. Stanford, Northwestern and Michigan is not a walk in the park.
I doubt UConn will need the eyes of the committee.

The ACC is a powerful force in the field hockey world, and that includes the selection committee. Last year it did seem to hurt UConn in the eyes of the selection committee. Many felt UConn deserved a 1 seed for the NCAA tournament, but got downgraded in favor of another ACC team. The main culprit was the perceived strength of schedule. With a bunch of ACC teams hanging around the top 10, if you don't play them, it hurts when it comes around to selection time.

Old Dominion field hockey seems to have fallen on hard times. ODU was at one time one of the pillar programs in college field hockey. They still hold a record 9 NCAA field hockey titles, although the last on came in 2000. ODU has not appeared in the NCAA tournament since 2013, and the last few years the Monarchs have been struggling just to have a winning record, let alone getting into the NCAA field hockey tournament. I thought when this program joined Big East field hockey that they would provide at least a decent replacement for Syracuse in providing tough conference competition for UConn field hockey. Looks like I was wrong with that one. I'm guessing ODU field hockey has really been hurt by among other things by its location of being pretty much in the heart of ACC country, the long time dominant conference in NCAA field hockey.

The coach that led ODU to those titles, Beth Anders (?), retired 5 years ago. The new coach hasn't been able to continue the high standards.

That would make sense. Thanks for the info.

On Sunday UConn field hockey plays at No. 5 ranked Delaware, the defending national champions. That should be a great game. Together with the last game of the season against currently 8th ranked Boston College, it looks to be the most difficult game of the season for the currently undefeated Huskies.
