On Jasmine Davidson, a 6-1 W/F from Oregon:

Defensively, she is well beyond her peers in her instincts, positioning off the ball and on-ball prowess. It is evident that she has been in the gym with some very good teachers of the game. Her recruitment includes Stanford, Oregon, Washington State, UConn, Louisville, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Arizona State, UCLA, Cal and Utah.

F Kennedy Smith
6-foot-1
Etiwanda High School (Calif.)

Smith is as physical presence as there is in the country in her class. She has a very strong frame at the forward position with the touch and skills to garner major recruiting attention. She already has offers from UCLA, Cal, Washington State, Arizona, Rutgers and Houston.

Etiwanda has been in the top five of the SCNext rankings since it won the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix in December, and Smith has anchored its aggressive defense. She can match up with both inside and perimeter players upon a switch. She carves out space for rebounding and attacks the glass hard.

Offensively, Smith has proven she can stretch the defense to the arc, particularly in the slot at the top of the key. She powerfully ducks in for easy post up opportunities and can put the ball on the deck for contact finishes. She can reach the next level as she refines her face-up game. Smith, who averages 18.7 points and 9.3 rebounds, is similar in style to WNBA Rookie of the Year Michaela Onyenwere.

PG Katie Fiso
6-feet
Garfield High School (Wash.)

Fiso is shifty off the bounce and has become efficient in playing in small spaces. Her moves are tight and she changes direction quickly and changes pace very well. She pushes the ball with a purpose up the floor, and she can either create a pull-up jumper for herself or set up a shot for her teammate with her crisp passing skills.

She has become adept at reading the pick-and-roll options and is now patient enough to know how to bait the defense into getting what she wants. Her 3-point shot is as efficient as ever, and defenses have to play her honestly because she can pull it off the dribble with a small window. Her quick trigger as she attacks open space makes opponents overreact, and when they do, she can drop a dime to the roller or manipulate the help to create an open spot-up jumper for one of her wings.

Defensively, Fiso uses her feel for the game and length as a major advantage. She reads schemes well off the ball, and it makes her a good help and recover defender. Averaging 22 points per game, Fiso is one of the best point guards in her class. Her offers include Washington State, Gonzaga, Harvard, Cal, USC, Oklahoma, Arizona, Utah State, Washington, Utah, Montana State, Oregon State, Boise State, Pepperdine, Penn State and UCLA.

PG Aaliyah Chavez
5-foot-9
Lubbock Monterrey High School (Texas)

Chavez is as creative with the ball as any player in the country. She has incredible ballhandling skills, floor vision and passing abilities, and she can knock down shots from deep. She plays the game with a flare and passion that makes her entertaining. Earlier this season, she had a 50-point, 14-rebound, 5-assist performance.

She plays the game with a mature savvy. She faces a myriad of defensive game plans that are physically taxing, as well as double teams and face-guard situations, yet she adapts and attacks. She is really good in the pick-and-roll and makes plays that simply take courage.

Look for an extremely competitive show-stopping summer out of Chavez. She is averaging 25.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 7.4 rebounds per game. Her offers include: Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Arkansas, Louisville, SMU, TCU and West Virginia.

More on Jasmine Davidson from PN:

Davidson is one of the top players we saw all weekend. She can just get to balls other players can’t. She is at the rim every time she catches the ball on the perimeter. Very tough player to guard because of her size and basketball acumen. She can shoot the 3 and has great handles. Defensively she makes it tough for offenses to come into lane with her timing and length defending the rim. Did I mention she can facilitate off the bounce? Made some great passes off the dribble to a teammate in the paint. We don't see players like Davidson come around very often. There is no lid on her ceiling in the future.

The 4 that you bolded would be very good to build in versatility which I think will be very important considering how thin the '24 and '25 classes will be for big posts. Do you think there will be room for 5 in the '23 class? If so, just stockpile as much talent as possible with either Williams or Kitts. I'm good with any 4 of those 6. IMO, all of the others are probably going elsewhere.
The problem right now is the lack of positional diversity in the 2024 top 25 positionally. It is a very guard heavy class. I think at most 3 from 24 split up between guard's and wings. I'd like 23 to be a 5 player class by adding 3 bigs to the guards already committed.

Davidson has made an impression on South Medford coach Tom Cole, whose team has high expectations after going undefeated last season and winning the elite bracket of the Portland-area culminating week tournament.

"Jazzy Davidson is already special, but she has the potential to be the best player in the history of the state," Cole told the Medford Mail-Tribune.

"I've seen some great freshman players who have come out through our state, with Cameron Brink and Mercedes Russell and Evina Westbrook and Jordan Reynolds and Jaime Nared ... but I have never seen a freshman who is as poised and as gifted as she is as a freshman."

When Stanford is in on a kid and it's their "dream school" like Kiki Iriafen, it's usually on to the next because the party's over.
And if not Stanford there is her dad being an Oregon alumni. Don’t see her heading in East for college.

I don't disagree but the three best real bigs are Cunningham, Del Rosario, and Vasconcelos. Cunningham is in my opinion the only one who's a UConn level talent and I believe she'll stay on the west coast. If they can get Toomey they may have to hope for one or both of Booker and Kitts who are in the 6-1 to 6-2 range to get to a 5 player class.

We have solid prospects coming in already for the next 2 years. I'd like to see a center available who fits the program. I see Ice and Ayanna more as power forwards but I could certainly see Ice replacing ONO in the post. Overall though I'd like to see a big post player with skill. We are in a strong position already but we certainly could use some depth. I'd shoot for the moon. Ciera, Mikaylah etc... I'd also look for some athletic players who can defend.

Amari will morph into a beast in the middle (let’s hope)

The need for a "true" post player in 23 depends in large part what happens with the development of Amari and Piath. I agree with your assessment that Cunningham is the only one of the three who could be UCONN ready to be a contributor as a freshman. To be candid I don't think UCONN can afford to have 3 rosters spots @ the same position waiting for players to develop. For the start of the 23-24 Amari will be a Junior and Piath will be a senior if it has not clicked by then it is never going to for them. UCONN can look at the transfer portal or press hard to sign Blanca Thomas or Kate Koval- Kate would be my preference in '24 because of her mobility and versatility.

You mean a better version of HJ? Wow!
Maybe. But I was just referring to a second version of a 6-1 kid from the west coast who's dream school was Stanford.

Ok. I really wish people knew what the 2.0 actually means when they use it.

She's apparently a POI.
Sounds like she’s pretty much out of reach for us already! She actually seems like a Stanford girl. Very impressive! I wish/hope we had a better chance with her but I’m afraid she’s going to end up being a problem for us instead. Best of luck to her though!
