Both are high energy teams on both ends of the floor.

I hope Hurley and his staff are watching this game. Both move the ball up court quickly and look for early offense before the D is set. If nothing is there they pull it out and run their sets. I've been asking for weeks now for UConn to play like this, but instead we see a lot of slow motion sets that are too often not creating good shots. I just want more balanced attack and for them to run their multi-action sets more quickly and precisely. Just not sure they have the BBIQ to do so this year. I hope they do.

Now ISU runs some nice half court offense. Lots of hard screens and quick rolls to the basket. And a lot of quick drives to the paint. While Houston doesn't really run much of a complex offense, but tonight has been streaky hot from beyond the arc. They attack and pass and attack some more. Their aggressive offense would be problematic for UConn. They're a team I'd rather not have to face in the tournament.

Defensively Houston does a lot of quick trapping in the half court. You have to be careful to take care of the ball and space well or be decisive with your offense to avoid the hard traps. When the ball is in the paint they swarm quickly to it.

Reed would likely draw a croud and would need to be more decisive or quickly find the open man, which could generate some open in rhythm 3s. He's been glacierly slow with the ball this season. Maybe it's my misremembering but didn't he look more decisive last season? Note he did pass out of the post well a couple games ago, but that looked like an anomaly, but he seems capable. I would like to see more of that. Either a decisive attack or kick out and shot or a reset. I don't like the stand there and slow move to the basket I'm too often seeing from him.

ISU plays some tough man D staying in front of their man. Solid D but not as aggressive as Houston's.

Both are talented solid physical teams that, as some have pointed out, would be tough matchups for UConn.

These refs are allowing a lot of contact as long as the offense player maintains the ball, but are calling the contract that results in a turnover or impacts shot. I wish our BE refs called the games this way.

I agree wholehearted with your last point. It's night and day different the way this game or other Big 12 games I have watched have been called v. Big East games. The amount of contact they allow makes the game so much more watchable. No way UConn would have the fouls called on them with these refs. They are letting you be handsy, play with physicality, and not calling these cheap touch fouls. So refreshing to watch. Forget UConn watching this game, Big East refs should be.
 
Noticed that ISU does some quick hard trapping in the half court, especially moreso in the second half, but not as frequently as Houston. They were playing some match up zone for a while, but I thought they got burnt on it too much and gave up offensive rebounds due to the nature of not having solid rebounding position out of zone.

Refs seem to be calling it more closely this half. Wish they'd stick to how they were calling the game.

Both teams love to drive it into the paint as much as they can, something that gives UConn fits on the defensive end and something we're just not that good at on our offensive end of the floor.

Nice write up.

We'd have to sedate either one of these teams to hold court, at a pace no higher than 50-60 points.

This Houston team looks like a real one seed.

I bet we would look real good vs these teams. Their D is tough but allows for sets to flow.

Not a shot at you, but I thought the general theme was that Big East refs didn’t call enough fouls and the conference was way too physical?

We'd definitely look better than what we look in the BE, but there is no way we can run with a team like Houston. We'd have to slow it down and test their discipline. They're so much more athletic.

Houston can bring a body like this kid Saakho off the bench, a big brawny kid that can eat time in the paint. Why can't we can kids like this anymore? We feel so delicate relative to a team like Houston.

It's fun to watch these teams play. They are both relentless at attacking the basket. I hate admitting this, but this is a lot more fun to watch compared to our slow motion offense and BE slug fests.

Don't get me wrong. When we run out sets quickly with purpose that results in good looks inside, open cutters, open midrange and 3s, it's fun to watch. It's we just don't see enough of that.

High D1 programs signing on Assistant coaches with little to no HC experience that bomb? You know that list is long, right? Kyle Neptune, Kim English, Red Autry to kick off the list.

These two teams specifically though. I can’t recall a team we’ve played recently that pressures like either of them, and we don’t have an excess of ballhandlers.
