It was a great to witness last nights events. Everything took a back seat to Geno and CD's achievements/celebrations. The game, although not an after thought, was kinda lack luster in my mind. They had a hard time containing #4 for FDU, just think what a JuJu would do in similar circumstances. Who on this team is a defensive stopper ? I don't see one. Maybe when Aubrey gets back in action that will change. One thing for sure is that Sarah is the heir apparent to Paige as far as ability and basketball IQ goes.

Who is going to stop the combo of Paige/Azzi/Sarah?

"Who is going to stop the combo of Paige/Azzi/Sarah?" What does that have to do with what my comments were ? I never mentioned anything about offensive shortcomings. It's the defensive side of the ball that I was commenting on.

Why the concern of who is going to stop Juju on a thread that's about the UCONN FDU game if the other team/player you are so worried about can't stop UCONN?

You chose ot bring up a team that had nothing to do with this game as a concern and my point was that the player you chose to bring up - her team - can't stop UCONN, so it was implied "what's the concern?"

My personal feelings are that last night UConn's defense was the promising side of the equation. What I saw was a total team effort.

45 Rebounds
12 Steals
3 Blocks
18 Forced Turnovers
Only committed 4 Fouls

I don't know that any one particular player on the Husky squad is going to completely contain Hannah Hidalgo or JuJu Watkins or probably others as we get to them. Some of those players are competing at such a high level that they are going to get their points; but that does not necessarily mean that we lose the game.

For me, I'm not sure any Xs and Os conclusions can be made from this game. It was so emotional. Over the years, I've watched milestone type games and they are always emotional and typically the star players in particular don't shoot well. It is not surprising that 2 newest players shot the best.

One last thought about Sarah: she's not quite as big and powerful as Aaliyah, though she's close. But her offensive arsenal just seems significantly more developed, and she's just a freshman.

Aaliyah worked at the midrange game and got really good at the 15 ft elbow jump shot. By her junior year she'd established this part of her game. And she got really good at driving the lane and the baseline.

Sarah already has those skills, the midrange game, the perimeter game, the drive down the lane. And she seems to be a better defender in some respects. She has really quick hands and gets steals and blocks in surprising ways.

I don't mean to diminish Aaliyah in any way, who was an awesome player and a very disciplined personality. She is admirable in all respects. Sarah is all those things too, and maybe a little more.
Edwards had a lot of limitations (esp. turnovers) even in her last two seasons. I said after the first game that Strong might be an upgrade over Edwards. I'm removing the "might" at this point and saying she is. And Strong will, I'm pretty sure, only get a lot better over the course of the season. Very impressive and polished.

Getting back to the FDU game, I also am concerned about our execution on defense but I think the main deficiency I noted will be addressed by Geno and the staff. It's very early in the season and the coaches can't fix every issue this early in the year.
I look forward to improved defense before we face our more difficult OOC foes. Watching a replay of the FDU game it amazed me how just about all of our players somehow think that standing 5' away from a shooter waving one hand can stop 3 point shots. It didn't work yesterday against a lightly recruited FR and won't work against ranked teams.

Of course, in the general scheme of things, Ice is replacing Aaliyah. Sarah is replacing Paige at forward. Paige is replacing Ashlynn at wing. Ashlynn is replacing KK at shooting guard and Kaitlyn is replacing Nika at pg. ;)

Aaliyah’s senior year was fine, it was her junior year where the number ballooned. That was due to the injuries to the guards that left the Huskies with just Nika, Lou, and Ines which meant the forwards had to handle the ball more than is desirable. The entire team was prone to turnovers that year.

With all due respect, saying a college freshman is better an All-American, an Olympian, and professional basketball player is beyond hyperbole.

Fingers crossed, a lineup like above will suffice (has to) until Azzi is ready to start. She will solidify the backcourt and perimeter shooting (with an active rotation of Ash and KK at SG and PG). Until Jana develops, and/or Ayanna & Aubrey can play, Ice has to be that post presence - a difficult task considering she gives up a bit of height and a lot of aggression to what Aaliyah brought last year.

Great event, couldn't figure out why they had a game in the middle of it!

(My one gripe, was I thought those blown glass tropies for CD and Geno were really cheesy.)
Great to see Azzi on the court
Great to see Sarah drain one three, and then repeat that three times.
Thought Chen plaid well and she and Paige were in sync.
Ice continues strong play.
KK looked really good with her role.

And all the alum was such a wonderful look, and a great advertisement for the program.

I wanted Geno to answer one of those 'why do you keep coming back' questions with, 'why wouldn't I come back to work with all these wonderful players? Sure I could be playing golf, but then I would be missing Paige, Azzi, Sarah, Chen, Shade, KK, Jana, etc.

Did anyone see the Nika video? Streaming SNY here in FL, they cut away from commercial breaks, so I heard about it, but no details.

Yeah, Nika's Mazda commercials have been airing for about a month and have been discussed here. I loved seeing it during a UConn game!

Watch almost any senior night video and the shooting is not good.

that's a really good picture

Can anyone identify the former husky just above and to the left of Dee? I can remember her playing but can't recall her name. I have a foggy memory of her having a huge game with a lot of blocks-maybe against Stanford???? Please help me:)

Kelly Schumacher had 9 blocks against Tennessee in the National Championship game. I believe that was in 2000.
