Some thoughts on the FDU game:
  • 1,217!!!
  • For those of us who are a little long in the tooth, the concept of doing the same job, in the same place, for 40 years, better than anyone has ever done it before, is inconceivable. The Boneyard's profound congratulations to Geno & CD!!!
  • Kudos to FDU for showing up tonight and playing hard. The Knights had no idea they would be making history when they scheduled this game, just like Tracy Stallard pitching to Roger Maris in a meaningless baseball game in September of 1961.
  • After struggling against UNC’s zone, UConn clearly worked on moving the ball in and out, high and low and side to side against FDU’s zone, getting a bunch of open shots. Once again, the Huskies just have to knock down more shots.
  • Have you ever heard a bigger cheer for someone making a couple FT’s then after Azzi knocked down her first two? I can imagine the emotions that Tim & Katie Fudd were feeling seeing their little girl back on the court.
  • I’m not sure what the record is for missed bunnies in a game, but Jana certainly made a run at it tonight.
  • Kaitlyn is starting to look like the player that dominated the Ivy League for 4 years.
  • I don’t think we need to worry about Sarah’s 3-pt shooting anymore. :)
  • Shout out to Q. She was only 1/3 shooting the ball, but she did a lot of other things well, particularly rebounding and playing aggressive defense.
  • To all the BY’ers heading to the Bahamas and the Baha Mar Women's Championship for some sun, fun and basketball, I am incredibly jealous.

So a lot to note from this one:

Azzi defense is top tier. Going to be a problem once we reach March. She already look comfortable defensively, now let's wait for the offense to click.

Paige, even on a sub-par shooting night, still has 16/5/9. Quiet, but probably the 2nd best player out there.

Sarah was the best player on the court. Those 3's are dropping, and she's even more of a menace now. She's going to get a triple double sometime this season.

Jana... I'm not even going to say anything here. She's going to be mad after this one.

Ice is honestly developing nicely. Saw some nice post moves from her. Less outside shooting as well.

Ash was solid.

Chen is killing me with her drives so far. She goes in all the way, and then circles back out once she realizes that having 3 defenders on top of you is a bad idea. Need her decision making to make a stark improvement.

Geno... congrats on the win, but that man was as unhappy as can be on the bench.Head bang

One thing is: We don't normally play like this. Paige had layups rim out. Wide open 3's not go in. Jana had a few tough moves, and the layup rolled out. This was not a normal game for us for sure.

Positives:

4 total fouls. Less than double digit TOs.

Conclusion: We ain't ever beating the "tanking in front of the alumni" allegations. Also, perimeter defense needs to tighten up a bit, we gave up way too many 3's.

FDU hit 3s, like I expected them to. It was really the only thing that kept it close to start.

Paige was Paige, but BOY is Strong something else!!

I was very pleased with how everyone played today. No complaints from here.

Congrats to Geno and CD!!!! And how great was it to see all the former players?? :):):):)

Chen played really well in the first half and Sara was the best player on the court

It’s pretty amazing to me that Geno and CD have coached 2 generations of young woman. Yet, with all the changes in those 40 years they continue to effectively connect with and help those women attain their goals.
What an amazing achievement!!!

All in all, a very good game. I think the gravity of the moment affected most of the players and then the excitement of having Azzi back on the court.
I feel bad for Jana, another game where she played her bu!! off and it just didn't translate to the box score.
I was so relieved when Q sank that 3 because she was also playing her bu!! off, playing good D and being active on offense.
A very good win.

An off night for Jana (1-6, 5 rebounds) and Paige (6-13, 9 rebounds, 5 assists), Ice put in another solid performance (4-7, 10 pts).

Sarah was transcendent (8-13 w/ 4-7 from 3, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals). She can register a double double anytime she feels like it. And after missing like 10 3s in a row over the last couple of games, she closed this one out making 4 in a row. She may have found the range.

KK, Ash, and Kaitlyn were steady and fierce. Q hit a 3 and got a few rebounds. The freshmen looked incrementally better.

KK and Jana need a bit more floor. Ashlynn needs to broaden her game.

Nice ladder !
That’s something to show the recruits
For years, the Huskies only took down the nets at the NCAA Championship game, just 11 times in all. But I do believe that last year when the Huskies beat USC in the Elite 8, they did in fact take down the nets in Portland.

Qadence has something the other guards don't have except for Paige is length on closeouts she gets good run and hands up. When we run into a hot hand from the 3 point line we have to get up on them. She also hustles and rebounds well.
Sarah hands speed is amazing
The new guard on the floor tonight looked a little bit like Azzi Fudd.
Jana is tough and determined to score in the low post and they need to have the ball go in and back out and then in again she will be a monster at some point in her career.

Good defense tonight. I suspect Jana would want this one back. But I liked what I saw.

I suspect Geno will be glad to get the record over with. I am glad to see all the former players come back to support the program.

Next up Oregon State. I hope UConn spends their time preparing for Ole Miss though. Very dangerous team.

An odd flow to the game tonight. FDU was disciplined and handled the pressure well. With such a team of outside shooters, conventional wisdom would state that UConn would shoot a team out of playing it. For the second game in a row, UConn's offensive flow sputtered against the zone, partly due to missing 3's. Of course, Sarah finding her range (she reminded me of Azzi when she made four 3's in a row) helped immensely. It's hard to fathom that this is Sarah's 4th collegiate game. By the time she graduates, her name will be in the record books.

Paige can have an off night shooting (for her), but she made up for it in other ways. As long as she brings her "A" game against the top teams.

As others have mentioned, Ice is putting together consecutive impressive outings.

It will take Azzi a little time to find her sea legs after missing so much time. You could see she wanted to hit a "3" in the worst way.

Very nice to see Qadence hustle on the defensive end and take some looks before taking her first shot. She's got tons of potential.

While everyone associated with UConn program is happy for Geno/CD, I think Geno and the team is glad the record is behind them and they can concentrate on the season ahead.

The best thing I liked about this game was EVERY one ate. They all contributed. Kudos to SARAH for her best game yet with UCONN. Paige almost had a double-double and SARAH also. I thought Ashlynn started out on fire but she didn't maintain the start. Chen was productive and the total defense was superb .UCONN is now jelling and I say bring on the pretenders.GO FRESHMEN!!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!
