You're leaving schools like JMU and Liberty off the list. Probably the most successful move ups. There have been quite a few more Coastal and UNCC.
Results vary. Many teams that have moved up have had some measure of success. I'm not sure how to compare playing in completely irrelevant bowl games vs. deep runs in FCS playoffs. Liberty did get themselves into a major bowl recently...and got curb stomped. Marshall initially did fairly well in 1A/FBS/whatever. I can't remember if Randy Moss was still there when they moved up or if he was already gone. You had the Byron Leftwich years. But somewhere along the line they slipped into mediocrity (or worse) and have been up and down for a while now.

There's more $ to be made in FBS, but it also costs more to try to compete at that level. There are a million bowl games, and most of them nobody cares about at all. I'm sure it's very complex weighing whether to move up or not, but I'm just not sure chasing the big prize is worth it for most schools.

yeah you'll have to see what the long term looks like for JMU and Liberty. I don't doubt liberty will throw money at things until results come around. JMU seems to have strong support but we will see.

None of the schools that moved up have won like ten FCS championships.

I saw a video of their pep rally before the title game - those people are having an amazing experience.

UMass just was dealt another blow to their conference move with NIU moving the MW for football only.

Honestly, if there are any UMass fans left, they just need to cling to hockey like grim death. The rest is just an inferno.

Lowell has caught up to them in so many sports its just depressing for UMass. I won't even say its exciting for us (UML '04, UConn '09) though it is nice that the program is winning in other sports but it shouldn't be this close. We should be getting skunked by good old ugly sister.
