I much prefer that it's creative, although note-for-note recreations can be wonderful. I offer two covers of Enter Sandman by Metallica from the same group. First up is the note-for-note, when the members of the Warning were nine to fourteen years old:

It can be either, a cover of a song can be sung note by note or a different arrangement, it's still a cover of the song.
