You’re making this into an “either or” and it’s not. There absolutely was a step back in the talent of the defensive unit this year, and in addition to that mistakes were made, like on their last TD, or the score we gave up at the end of the first half of the BC game, that were less about physical talent and not having someone in the right place at the right time, which is about coaching.Calling Brock a superstar after last year is bit of a stretch. I mean, we gave up 42 points to UMass . We were just used to having putrid defenses that seeing an average one seemed like a miracle.
Yes, we lost a lot of talent from last year's defense and yes, we missed a bunch with the transfer class (which Brock should bear some of the blame as I doubt he didn't have any say in who we recruited), but there's an overall scheme issue here. To play the 3-3-5 and be successful, you need top of the line talent. Newsflash, we are never going to get 11 of those at UConn. It's much easier to hide the deficiencies on our defense when we play a more traditional scheme, instead we are asking them to do things they are not very good at.
Continuing to use the 3-3-5 severely limits the ceiling on our team, and if we want to continue the upwards trajectory of our program, that is a valid discussion to have, so spare me your puritan "true UConn fan" bs
