My opinion is it was more of a shift that top teams just got better at identifying talent, so less guys were starting at a lower level. I think we'll start to see more examples of transfers up having better NBA careers as more of the 4 star recruits are moving down a level to play freshman year and then can transfer up.

That’s exactly the idea. In Steph’s case, we have his brother as an example of what could’ve happened who went from averaging 20 a game at Liberty his freshman year to never looking like that caliber of player at Duke.

I’m interested to see how Yaxel does and for more information on this to come out.

If a guy has 3-4 years to get better and develop their game for the NBA, I just don’t see how spending a year regressing/plateauing trying to fit into a new team is the best way to maximize their talent.

I would love to get a PF with size and strength to go with good shooing instead of playing small ball with even smaller lineup than last year potentially.

Seth Curry was first team all-ACC at Duke and second team all-American at Duke.

There's really no way to know this, but I think the reason Seth didn't look as good at Duke as at Liberty is he wasn't as good as Steph. We have the ability of hindsight here but I think you could have put Steph on any team in the country and he'd have done the same thing.

I guess my larger point is at some point you'll have to face the improved competition whether it's P5 or the NBA. Not going to dismiss the idea that moving up can stunt development for some guys, I just think that if you're a star like we're looking for in this conversation it'll show up regardless.

It's a fun conversation, I don't think either of us are definitively right or wrong.

Seth went from averaging 20.5 PPG at Liberty (Steph averaged 21.5 his first year at Davidson)

To 9 PPG at Duke in what should’ve been his junior year and finished averaging 17.5 PPG his 5th year.

You don’t think if he stayed at Liberty he could’ve been on Steph’s trajectory of developing as a star player on a team and eventually hitting that 25 PPG mark and being on draft boards more rather than going to fit in at Duke?

He wasted his sophomore-senior year (timeline wise because he was there till his 5th year) adjusting rather than growing on what was a great freshman year.

It does make you wonder at some point far down the line, if MM's end up being aligned minor league systems for the high major's. Let your freshman go to Campbell under a Duke contract for year one, under Duke NIL. They can then be called up, maybe even in season, if they're ready. Could make it more fun for both ends.

They simply can't compete anymore. These last two tournaments are plenty of proof.

There are 4 top 100 HS kids going to MM's, VCU, Memphis, Gonzaga & Dayton. I would guess that any decent MM player this year is in the portal and will be portaling up to a HM if good. Not sure what putting them on a playing field of programs with 15mm in NIL is.

To say Seth could have been as good as Steph if he had been developed properly at college is hysterical. Cream rises.

I know we're far down the road to professionalization here, but I think we're a ways from getting called up to a different school midyear. These are still colleges. Is he going to switch math classes, too?

The point is he would’ve been better off developing as a star at Liberty who could’ve averaged 25 PPG as a junior instead of 9 PPG at Duke.

The point of course is not that he would’ve been Steph. Don’t be stupid. The point is he would’ve been much better off than transferring “up” to Duke.

The idea that an NBA executive charged with making hugely consequential decisions for the future of his franchise (and his own career) would reduce his analysis to "Kid A scored 25 a game at Liberty and Kid B scored only 9 ppg at Duke" is so facile and ridiculous it boggles the mind.

Our American basketball system is shit. This transfer portal nonsense which results in what we see now is helping it become even shittier. This mid major transfer up thing is hampering careers and removing another American talent pipeline to the NBA by having these guys mess up their development trajectory chasing short term money and 15 minutes of fame.

I hate it.

Hence all the europeans in the NBA. Yes, the US BB system is basically become private equity.

Don't really see how the portal is hampering development as the higher you go up, the better the coaching and competition. I'd say that trumps continuity with a MM program.
