East Texas Post Game Thread

You didn't notice our 50+ points in the paint? We had guys running free to the basket all night.
Yeah - we had bigger players at almost every position, so running into the paint was a good tactic.

But that doesn't negate the point that we only shot 25% from three being bigger at almost every position. We were not running great offense that gets guys open. We just abused our size.

Nice to see him with 7 rebounds. He really played hard and smart when in there. I love his assists. I still like to see him drive with the ball more as he can score doing that with his skillset.
I agree. He didn't shoot any threes tonight so someone was in his ear after the Kansas game where he mostly stayed out near the 3 point line.

ET A&M’s offensive strategy was to chuck up quick long range prayers. They made a solid amount of them surprisingly. I don’t think it was bad UConn defense just low probability shot making.

UConn offense focused on uncontested layups and getting Mullins some shots. 24 point win.

Yeah, I thought Silas was known as a great 3 pt. shooter. I wonder if learning the offense has caused his game ot be a little off from last year. Still nice to see some nice drives from him and Smith.
Good, not great. Shot 37% from three on pretty decent volume last year. 30% his freshman year at lower volume.

Andre Jackson agrees 😀
Though Andre always took his awkward shot right next to the line. He had limited range. Karaban has more range but he still shotputs his shot at times just like Andre. I think Andre was more in his release while Karaban it is how he squares up on his shot.

I love Andre but we’re comparing him to Karaban as a shooter now? C’mon.

Stewart played well - he seems to prefer games with more tempo and opportunities to attack in transition.

Solo was more efficient today - only forced one 3pt shot that I can think of.

I find myself having more and more faith in Ross each game. Feels like he knocks down the kickout 3s more often than not these days.

Karaban slip screened them to death - was always there to get an easy bucket when we needed to stop a mini run. Tip of the cap to Malachi and Silas for getting the passes right on the money each time.

Reibe is so close to being a really dominant player. As much as it felt forced at times in the 1H, that constant stream of entry passes into the low post are great reps for him and opportunities to learn what does (and does not) work at this level to finish the play.

I know the spread was deep in the 30s but have to be happy with a 24pt win where the 3rd line got most of the time inside the final tv timeout.

I didnt compare him up. Hooper Scooper did. I actually commented on how they had different issues with their shots and of course Andre was the worst shooter.

I thought he played a very good game. He seems to be up and down from game to game. But today is exactly what he is capable of giving them more often.
This is pretty much a perfect game for him this year. If he can give this level of floor game and score even half the points it’s what UConn will need against the best teams.

I want 8-12 from Stewart and Ross combined a game with Mullins back.

You were wondering why Karaban never fixed his shot. I pointed out that nobody ever fixed Ajax’s shot. I wasn’t comparing them. It was a joke. I guess I need to put a j/k on my posts.

Yeah but because of the decent volume i thought he would be shooting it more. He seems hesitant to even look for a 3 in his offense. It seems like Hurley wants both him and Smith driving more and creating shots for other as we were missing this with last year's point guards.

it’s all about getting ready for March… getting the best seed and peaking late . it’s possible that florida and johnie’s (3x) are the only substantial games left . minutes at the point and center clear as is the fact that hurley will play alex min 35 in a game that matters unless foul problems . the other 85 minutes are a good problem to have . if in the tournament 2 of solo , mullins , stewart or Ross are a “big factor “ in every game we can win another . this team has talent ; just need to avoid that “everybody sucked “ game. the one concern .. this team doesn’t YET have the GUY like hawkins in 2023 and 3 GUYS in 2024 ( four if you count clingan on defensive end )

Good games from Stewart and Reibe. Hopefully Reed is back for Florida, they have a ton of size. Want to see Silas get some confidence back, he doesn’t seem to look to shoot at all from the outside even when wide open.

On to the next, liked Mullins little run he had.
Not even sure if it's confidence from Silas. Think he's just focused on running the offense and attacking the rim over taking 3s unless he's super open on a catch currently. He doesn't look to be forcing anything.

And tbh we've been winning a lot so I don't think he needs to go out of his way to shoot. He's our best driver to the rim and that's his main focus as it opens up everyone else when he does that well.

Malachi has to do a better job of creating for others though.

East Texas A&M played hard. They were really fun to watch on defense. Offense was a different story, they seemed like they were running decent stuff but the size and talent gap was just too much to generate consistently good looks. But kudos to them, they were a good watch

They had a clear gameplan, play tough and play fast. It was good to see UConn match them defensively, everyone was playing really hard and with a lot of pride for us

Solo is really deep into his own head. You could see a lot of frustration he was trying to take out on the rim. Hurley must have said something to him at halftime because he came out hot in the second. Was really nice to see them have a moment when he came out of the game at the end. Could see some relief on Solo’s face

Braylon looked like a freshman at times. Then looked like a 5 star freshman at times. Was that a personal 8-0 run in like 1 minute?

Thought Stewart played really well. That last dunk was great. Him, Karaban, and Reibe were actually wide open on rolls like that all night since ETAM was committing so much to perimeter defense. Demary and Malachi just missed them a lot

Fun game. Let’s go Huskies!

Solo needs to clean up his D. Still an issue. Nice to see that Stewart has really stepped up his D from last year.
Agree on both. These guys are just starting their junior years and their contributions on defense will lead to offense. They are long and capable of playing well in transition. Got to have D. Non-negotiable. Dan Hurley has the depth to enforce that this year but so much better if everyone just works with the coaches and system. That's what turned the last two NC teams into juggernauts. Last nights game I saw Dan Hurley greet Solo when he came out. Coach seems to be looking for improvement, not perfection. Everyone on the same page. Great to see Ross improving every game. Potential of this team is staggering.

Not surprising but not a great effort. More than enough to get the job done, but definitely looking forward.

3 point shooting - good lord - 25%? This was supposed to be a great three point shooting team and we have not really shot well from deep all year. Too many good shooters for that to happen which leads to my next point.

The motion on offense looks like something from ages ago. A lot of pounding the ball into the floor dribbling around. Where is the motion that was the talk of the town for several seasons. The cutting, screening, back screening, drop cuts, passes to passes with the ball never touching the floor, etc? What happened to that. That's what leads to great open shots. Doesn't look like a typical Hurley offense by any means.

Not to be too down - I'm sure things will get better, but hopefully they are refocused and on most cylinders on Tuesday.

Plenty of time to hone everything with a lot of talent everywhere.
Seems like Silas goes too slow and the other dude goes too fast. Neither play at the pace we need them too.
Dribble city by Smith and playing a long offensive clock are some of our current patterns. Seemed like a major effort to get the ball into Riebe early but that didn't work well in the first half. With more practice time now available we should see a better offense and timed to a 20 second shot clock. In the KS game we gave up the ball at least twice with shot clock violations.

Nice review and mental thoughts of several of our players that seem in tune with what happened on the sideline.

I never like the comments that are overly harsh on one of our players. Guys did it to Stewie and the kid came back and had a good game. Some did it to Ross last year too. Criticism is fine, but comments like "he has nothing" need to stop.

Now, is it me or is Braylon a little too quick to shoot and needs to let a play develop a little more? Silas is too patient, and Stew and Ross have developed patience. We know you're a lottery pick kid, but it's a team sport and the team needs to take the highest percentage shot. The Ross shot for example, where he was wide open. That's a higher percentage shot.
