East Texas Post Game Thread

Stewart played well - he seems to prefer games with more tempo and opportunities to attack in transition.

Solo was more efficient today - only forced one 3pt shot that I can think of.

I find myself having more and more faith in Ross each game. Feels like he knocks down the kickout 3s more often than not these days.

Karaban slip screened them to death - was always there to get an easy bucket when we needed to stop a mini run. Tip of the cap to Malachi and Silas for getting the passes right on the money each time.

Reibe is so close to being a really dominant player. As much as it felt forced at times in the 1H, that constant stream of entry passes into the low post are great reps for him and opportunities to learn what does (and does not) work at this level to finish the play.

I know the spread was deep in the 30s but have to be happy with a 24pt win where the 3rd line got most of the time inside the final tv timeout.
In the first half Reibe kept bringing the ball down to a level where ETAM could get their hooks onto it.

Largely corrected that in the second half.

I hope Hurley schedules just two cupcake games next year, 3 at the absolute MAX. They are so boring, useless, not to fun to watch, and nothing good can come of them after a few tune ups.
I would like to see them schedule a couple more mid level teams in the OOC, teams that would be in the top 50-100 or so range in NET/KenPom. Yale (although they are like 35 NET), Rhode Island/ St. Bonaventure/ Buffalo/Hofstra just to name a few. “Buy” games that we should still win, but they would be more competitive, like a 10-point win. I think the team would get more out of those than these typical cupcake games.

I never like the comments that are overly harsh on one of our players. Guys did it to Stewie and the kid came back and had a good game. Some did it to Ross last year too. Criticism is fine, but comments like "he has nothing" need to stop.

Now, is it me or is Braylon a little too quick to shoot and needs to let a play develop a little more? Silas is too patient, and Stew and Ross have developed patience. We know you're a lottery pick kid, but it's a team sport and the team needs to take the highest percentage shot. The Ross shot for example, where he was wide open. That's a higher percentage shot.
I hate when people comment harshly on our players.

Proceeds to nitpick our lottery pick after shooting 4 of 10 for 10 pts in a blowout.

I am so happy for Stewart. Now he needs to show out vs better competition. I think he’ll be starting against Florida because of the size of Haugh.
Does Donny know something? I thought I heard him mention that Reed and Reibe will spend time on the court together this season

I think we all like Stew and last night was what we're going to get. Games where he makes a difference and really shows his stuff, then games he just blends into the background. Last night I was sort of thinking he is like Tony Robertson in that way, Robertson had some of the most electric highlights and spurts I've ever seen in a Husky uniform....but he just never put it together consistently.

I love Andre but we’re comparing him to Karaban as a shooter now? C’mon.
I hate stats. They make us rethink what we are watching as an aggregate. Andre and Karaban arent even close in their offensive games. Youre right.
I don't care about the 4 for 20 from three because it's meaningless in context. No coach is gonna tell AK to stop shooting. He needs to play every minute he can and shoot whenever he feels its right.

You're making a ton of sense in this thread. F stats

No negative takeaways from this game at all. I loved how each of our 3 point guards played. They facilitated. That is as good up and down the floor as i remember seeing both Stewart and Ross play. Mullins gets knocked around a little but as he matures and gets stronger with time, he will be that special player that everybody is waiting to see. These guys are all justifying their minutes. I realize that for the most part we decidedly over matched and over powered them, but this could be another very special year.

And that led to 25% three-point shooting?
Keep up. I was responding to a post that said we were not running our offense well. Open layups are a very good indicator our offense is working as designed.

BTW you can have a poor shooting night from three even if we are running our offense well. So the comment is specious.

Not even sure if it's confidence from Silas. Think he's just focused on running the offense and attacking the rim over taking 3s unless he's super open on a catch currently. He doesn't look to be forcing anything.

And tbh we've been winning a lot so I don't think he needs to go out of his way to shoot. He's our best driver to the rim and that's his main focus as it opens up everyone else when he does that well.

Malachi has to do a better job of creating for others though.
He hasn’t even really been driving much though. Also I think Malachi has been setting up others well. It’s the best aspect of his game thus far.

My biggest takeaway was Stewart's improving footwork on defense. This is the first time I can recall where he did an outstanding job of consistently keeping smaller, quicker players in front of him.

Mullins' court vision also stood out. He made a couple of cross court passes on fast breaks that were dead on accurate.

He’s setting up guys off of dribble penetration. Still seems to be struggling to find guys coming off of cuts on the perimeter, which is why some people are saying he dribbles too much. I’m far less critical. He’s still learning the offense and managing to find guys and disrupt the defense.

You were wondering why Karaban never fixed his shot. I pointed out that nobody ever fixed Ajax’s shot. I wasn’t comparing them. It was a joke. I guess I need to put a j/k on my posts.
Actually they were working on Andre’s form. However, the adjustments made did not have better results so therefore remained unfixed. I think most understood you the first time .

I always thought JStew needed a bit more confidence in his offensive decision making and we're seeing it now.

Is Mullins still hurting? At the game he appeared to be limping a couple times. I never said anything and I heard someone behind me say the same.

Really should be 4/8. He was just chucking deep 3s in garbage time

I noticed the same. I think it will be a while before he’s 100%.

I noticed those passes. Without much effort, too. Having Mullins on the court is a good thing. By February he will be a very good if not excellent player for the team.

Feel free to call this major league nitpicking, but is Demary having trouble adjusting to the officiating? Through 9 games, he has 22 personal fouls (3 last night), which is tied with AK and 1 behind Stewart.

Mullins dove for a ball near half court and came up wincing. It didn't seem to affect him later in the game.

He's averaging 2.5 PF in our non-cupcake games. He's doing just fine.

What has he been doing? His shots have to come from somewhere.

The past two games Malachi has been a shoot first look to pass second player.

Well he is averaging 5 points the last 2 games specifically. Also note the word “much” I used. He has kinda just been running the offense, which is fine, but we have had some significant lulls recently, and that’s when you want your guys to go to the hole. He’s also just not really gettng to the line much at all, which is indicative of lack of driving.

I’m not seeing what you are seeing with Malachi at all.

Interesting sample size to use, we're ignoring his 9 assists against a top 15 the game before this why?
Because his steered away from that with a 1 assist and 2 assist game. There's a few plays I've noticed where he dribbles the ball way too long without giving it up and then just forces his way to the rim.

He needs to go back to being that 9 assist player and looking like one of the best passers in the country like he did in the preseason.

There is just so much of the game within the game that we just do not know.

For all anyone can prove Smith was coached to distribute more in particular games and coached to take his shots in others....

I make the above claim from a position of abject ignorance....

Those of you crunching numbers or evaluating performance after a game with a directional state school need a different hobby. I am getting a little worried that Bear’s injury is worse than they are letting on. Can’t wait until Tuesday.
