I’m not sure what the spread was but I’m assuming we destroyed it. That was fun!

My favorite parts -
  • Positionless basketball is real. Diarra, Mahaney, Nowell, Solo, Karaban, Ross, and Stewart all had at least 1 possession bringing the ball up and getting us into offense
  • Diarra is a bully and Tarris is a beast. They play so well together
  • We won blocks 11-1. 3 each from Samson and Tarris
  • JAYDEN ROSS LOL
  • I’ll say it after every game. I REALLY like Ahmad Nowell.
Lets go Huskies!

Decent shooting game for Mahaney. Only 1 assist but 0 turnovers is great especially compared to Diarra’s 5. Looks like the starting lineup and 9 man rotation is set for Maui at least.

Couple of observations on the games before Maui:

-I don't have confidence in anyone on this roster to A) consistently beat their man off the dribble and B) make a good decision if they do. Maybe Nowell can be that. The lack of a consistent dribble drive game has neutralized Johnson's greatest strength of the high pick and roll.
-Karaban is the only guy on the team I trust with entry passes.
-I feel like offense we are running the plays to run the plays at times. Be basketball players, be assertive. A lot of our turnovers are unnecessary or poorly timed passes.

Feeling a little uneasy about Maui.

Three point shooting numbers look bad tonight... and lots of turnovers. Overall, nice to see so many people contributing to the box score. True team effort tonight!

On Nowell, man is he fast! I’m sure Hurley didn’t like the lazy bounce pass which led to a turnover near the end of the game.

Absolutely loved Nowell's game, and he will be a stud.
McNeeley plays so poised and controlled like a Sophomore, he is definitely gone after the season. Enjoy him while he is here.

oh, As Hurely preached, the team started homing in those passes to Samson for dunks....

Spread was 36.5 - 38.5 based on where you looked. We didn’t cover, not that it really matters.

Not a lot of takeaways. Unlikely to play anything that looks like that once we play good teams. Doubt we’ll turn it over 19x as the chaotic nature of pace lead to a ton of them, but also resulted in a lot of easy baskets. This team is built to beat up on tomato cans with all the depth, not sure how effective that is against real teams.

Gonna be interesting to see how we execute once we are forced to play half court as so many of the baskets in these games are whirling dervishes. Ready for some real competition.

No, UConn failed to cover the spread. It was 37.5.

This is one of the better ones in UConn history IMO.

Off the top of my head, the Donyell Marshall 360 dunk on the fast break was probably more memorable, but there aren’t many better contested ones than this one.

I'm sure Hurley is not happy at all with that performance. Very sloppy and inefficient. We constantly got beat off the dribble and gave up a lot of open 3s (East Texas A&M just couldn't make any of them ). Plus we lost the loose ball battle. A lot to clean up before going to Maui.

The bad: Didn't cover, shot only 29% from three and most importantly had 19 turnovers.

The good: we won easily and got a lot of players some time and Samson didn't foul out.

We really won't know anything until Wednesday next week.

East Texas played very hard and made Uconn work. They were pretty quick and aggressive which helped cause the turnovers. But they had trouble getting shots off. Uconn too tall, to deep and talented.

I saw something which I really love about this staff. After a tough sequence of plays including questionable call Samson Johnson came out and you could see how frustrated he was. He had his head down sitting on the bench and Kimani came over and put one forearm on each shoulder and bent down and talked in his ear. I have seen this kind of consolation by Kimani in the past with Tristan N. and Hawkins after they seemed kind of frustrated and uncertain about a bad stretch. Johnson came back in and seemed completely renewed and on fire. I think Kimani just bleeds blue for these kids and is so inspirational. What a staff we have.

Nineteen turnovers against a marginal team have to be concerning. Many poor passes, bounce passes when had the size advantage???? Why??? We need more dribble penetration by our guards.

They tv went to Hurley after the pass and he was just shaking his head no.

Our defensive, while impressive at times, often showed us taking a head or shoulder fake and leaving our feet. The other team just couldn't finish but better teams will. Lots to improved upon by our young team. Love the rebounding effort by Reed, he really wants the ball and commands space well.

Ball and Ross are extremely jumpy. I'm afraid of what Haggerty and Hunter are gonna do to our defense.

Have to think that was Hurley’s last go at mass “experimenting” and we’ll see something a lot closer to how he wants to build the team on the go forward. He’ll likely ratchet the rotation down a bit and the guys that he sees as the winning pieces against real teams become more prominent.

One thing I don’t get with the scheduling is not amping up the competition at least a little bit before you go right into heavy hitters. Perhaps two stinkers to start then two semi decent mid majors. Really not sure what you learn against teams you can just overpower for 40. I realize some of these are scheduled well in advance.
