Early Coaching Hotseat Edition

Any chance Kevin McGuff departs on the heels of the DWI last year and 4th home-court NCAA loss since 2018, including now 3 consecutive years?

Lafayette Lets Go Kim Damon-Olson after Nine Seasons Making an Opening in Patriot League

I went to Lafayette to see the Irish play the Leopards last season and thought the facility was a good one, located on very nice campus just outside of town. Easton right over the Delaware River from New Jersey and I'd think the next coach should have/should establish links to the Jersey hoops scene, particularly the Shore Conference.

Their conference is terrible, honestly. They might have success in conference, but they are unlikely to reach mid-major (whatever that means in today's world) status.

While not surprising, that only the Big East and A10, outside of the Power 4, got an at large team in the NCAA's is very telling. That the BE only got 1 at large is telling. The A10 is a different story, it isn't especially a strong conference but historically the teams play a lot of Power 4 teams out of conference and reap some rewards from that. Even in (relatively) recent history I think they got 3 (total) one year, while other years they have been one bid.

I'm utterly convinced that programs at Pitt and BC are not fully supported by their respective institutions. A coach, as superhuman an effort that he/she may give, can only do so much; particularly in these days of NIL.

Hopefully, (relatively new) Pitt AD Greene will get more support to Harmony. In the interim, I'll bet she looks at players she recruited at Charleston that have done well at that level who might want to give it a go in the ACC.

In the meantime, let's see in what direction BC goes.

Pitt has had (very minor) success very briefly in the 30 years my wife and I have followed WBB. There have been 6 head coaches in that time - Kirk Bruce (nice guy), Traci Waites, Agnes Berenato, Suzie McConnell-Serio, Lance White and the recently departed Verdi.

Only Berenato, who was there for 10 years, had a winning record and actually made the Sweet 16 twice (in a row). However, her last 2 seasons both featured 21 losses, and the program hasn't really been relevant since.

I don't know why. But futility begets futility, I suppose.

Boston College was quite successful under the late Cathy Inglese. The 18 or so years since she left have been undistinguished. I have often wondered if they care?

Florida just hired Rhode Island's Tammi Reiss to become the head coach of the Gators. This comes after Reiss got Rhode Island to the ACC where they played a very competitive game against Alabama for awhile. She''s got some talent -- if it stays -- in Gainesville.
Plus, with the connections she's forged in New England and the East Coast, I'm sure still start coaxing players to come down to Florida.
Speaking of the north, that leaves Boston College and Northwestern open for business.

Florida hires Rhode Island's Tammi Reiss as women's basketball coach

Tammi Reiss will be the next women's basketball coach at Florida. A former Virginia teammate of Dawn Staley, Reiss will coach against her in the SEC.

Ok, now that I have walked off my angst, I am grateful for what Tammi accomplished at Rhody and will be rooting for her at Florida. She checks many of the boxes that Florida outlined. Her pay at URI as a paltry $400K+ per year. Her only ask was for her assistants to get paid more money. Now at Florida, she will fit with their $700K mandate and I hope she can retain the talent Finley acquired. Reese used her coaching connections to tap into the French national development system to get players and recently got a 6'6" Finnish player who has developed nicely. Not so sure she could survive in the SEC but she may transfer to there.

Tammi drastically overachieved at a school not known for any interest in WCBB. She garnered enough support within the community to make Rhody #2 in attendance in New England among all 21 D1 schools behind UConn and she surpassed 20 wins 4 times in her 7 years. She knows how to build a program. I will thoroughly enjoy her beating Tennessee. I wish her the best and now have to keep my fingers crossed that the new AD can hire someone to at least keep this ship afloat.

Given that, I'm wondering how their women's volleyball program became such a powerhouse, pretty much out of nowhere.

If he does, I know a program losing a cornerstone PG but otherwise set for a title run should anyone look to follow him out the door

Shea Ralph was an assistant at Pitt from 2003 to 2008, roughly aligning with Beranato’s best years. I’m not suggesting that it was all on Shea, but the alignment is nice.
 
Here's a big Whoa! 13 years at Alabama and six (?) at Texas Tech before that.
Alabama teams continue to become more formidable.
She's not from Florida, so clearly this was a decision to take the USF job. Not getting enough resources at Alabama? Tired of battling Kim, Dawn, Vic and, now, Shea? Big move.

Now that Curry has left Alabama (USF), I think Tammi and Florida will be able to take on Alabama in the not-too-distant future.

It's been noted that Alabama is last in spending for WBB in the SEC. Could that have had some influence? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Asst. Coach Lazo has been credited with much of the Lady Vols' recruiting success since Coach Caldwell took over last season. Wonder where he'll land. (N.B. In the last few days, LV Asst. Coach Roman Tubner interviewed for the HC opening at Kennesaw State.)
