E60 - “The Other Hurley”

The most important thing for our program in the shifting college sports landscape is to be relevant.

Some of you people have lost the plot.
Yep, ironically if this were coming out while in a 'known' rebuilding year it'd be considered just the right medicine to boost UConn's profile and aid recruiting.

Anything other than a 3-peat is not a disappointing season. 20+wins after losing 4 guys to the NBA and 7 in 2yrs is very good. If UConn isn't in the title convo in 2025, it is not a bad strategy to change the conversation to talk about the last 2 titles. No one is going to win twice this year so can still assert that Storrs is the basketball capital of the world. Maybe this pivots the conversation to say that IF it isn't three in a row it could still be 3 in 4 years b/c we've got the best coach & program. Get us now, redux, etc..

Yes not sure why people are minimizing this - who cares if its a rehash of a story we all know well? The fact that ESPN (ESPN!) is promoting UConn at a time when more people are starting to pay attention to CBB is huge for the brand. And this is during a down year. We need the brand to be out there as much as possible - its how we can win over recruits and eventually the brand will be a big part of the reason we get into a power conference.

if it's about the team, fantastic. If it's about hurley, he needs to make it about the team.

Why? I just don’t see the downside.

Hurley IS UConn. As was Calhoun and as is Geno. This isn’t professional sports where the team is bigger than the coach. His story is captivating. Let them talk about him/us.

He's been a soundbite gaff for much of the season. He's the coach, he should be putting his team first.

Do you think this was filmed at all recently? It’s airing now, which is most likely not in his control. I’d bet money it was filmed in the off season. With all the work he puts in what evidence could you possibly have that he isn’t putting the team first? He’s one of the faces of the sport, who has to do mandatory press conferences. Ofc they’re going to make everything he says a sound bite. It literally is of no consequence. He was the same guy the last few years and no one here cared. What changed?

All in all, it’s free promotion. This is what comes with being the face and standard in the sport.

Well ... it's called "the other Hurley." if it was filmed preseason or even at the beginning of the season and he talks about 3peat more than once, he's gonna look like a fool, and so is the school.

He won't look like a fool, because most people have more than 1 braincell and realize this wasn't filmed 2 weeks ago

1. Are you implying he funded or asked ESPN to do a doc on his story?

2. If not. Should he have turned it down? And why?

3. He looks like a fool be cause he was chasing a 3 peat?

I’d also love to hear when the “right time” is if it’s not after back to back national championships.

Lord have mercy.

The guy who said things were "as bad as the Ollie years" the other day was the one that jumped out to me. When they were going 14-18 in the American.
Yes, and I called him on it and was told this "feels" as bad as that era.

Jeez sorry we were preseason No. 3 and now will make the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight year. What a burden we carry around here.

Why do some people act like a slightly disappointing season is equivalent to getting caught in some scandal?

Timing could not possibly be worse? What?

Hey, Dawn Staley has a new book coming out. What? Doesn't she know her team got blown out by UConn? What a loser!
Focus is important. Blowout losses and other issues could be the result of outside distractions like book deals if they take you away from your work too much.

Some fans hate the program and coach unless we’re winning a championship. It’s a miserable way to fan. But to each their own
Too many people today get their self esteem from the team they root for.

Based on how ESPN has treated UConn in the past we don't know if this is a positive look at Dan Hurley or a hit job. Hopefully it's a warm look at a famous family with Dan Hurley recognized as now having matched or exceeded his Dad and brother with his two titles.

People will complain about everything. If the Duke HC gets air, they would complain about Dan Hurley not getting his. Now he is getting his, and they complain that its not about UConn. Come on! Imagine you are a HS kid getting recruited by us and you see this on ESPN. This is good stuff. Enjoy it.

Dan Hurley is the man. All time coach who rebuilt UConn from what looked like a potentially washed program into solidfying itself as a BLUE BLOOD in only 6 years.

Some of you haters are delusional.
It pisses me off when I hear fans of other teams saying Dan Hurley didn't win anything prior to the last two years, disregard he took two broken programs and turned them around quickly prior to joining.

We should all kiss the ground the guy walks on as fans of this program for what he's been able to do. This program has apexed under him and has nothing but year over year relevancy in sight. Part of the joy of following is seeing what he's going to do next, whether he wins or loses.

But isn’t that one of the reasons why people buy and proudly wear their schools gear out in public. Especially when things are going good ( don’t see much BC and Cuse gear anywhere these days, happily).
