I love watching Grant Hill lose his impartiality for a short period, looking at the camera and realizing it, and then going back to the broadcast.
Raf and Hill did exactly what you are suppose to do as the color guys. Hold your comments and you give Bird time to do the play by play call before you jump in.

This post is for the Husky fans who are hearing impaired. A transcript:

Eagle:

"One out of two. 72-70 Duke. Ten seconds to go."

Raftery:

"They will cut and run to the ball and who better than this guy?"

Eagle:

"Get it in to Boozer and back for Sarr. Ahead. Boozer AND THAT BALL DEFLECTED AND STOLEN BY MULLINS!! KARABAN TWO SECONDS. MULLINS TOSSES IT UP…OHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

IT’S GOOD WITH .3 UCONN GOES IN FRONT!!"

Raftery:

Utterly impossible. Oni…

Eagle:

" MARCH…MEANS…DRAMA!!!!"

Oh I agree. They did great. I mean watch the range of emotions Hill goes through (being a Duke guy). He’s clearly upset but pulls it together.

Funny story about the end of the game Sunday. My dad was watching and his TV was probably about 10 seconds ahead of mine. We were texting all game back and forth but he called me as Duke was inbounding the ball. I figured he was ready to talk about what a letdown it was so waited to answer until the game ended but he'd already hung up. 4 second voicemail before he hung up and called my wife next to me. Same exact 4 second voicemail in the same exact pitch for her, then hung up

Im actually surprised how media never dare to talk about this... this Duke coach is a sore loser and is a weak head, and here is why

1. in press conference, he NEVER hold accountable for any of that 2nd half play. I feel bad for that kid CaydenB, he does not deserve this coach and he played great that game. Coach is someone to stand infront of the critism, instead jon refuses to talk and hold himself accountable for the loss. he is weak and selfish
2. also, he didn't mention UConn a bit post game, no credit or anything, and I still don't see one clip he shake hands with hurley after game (i see hurley shake hand with players), correct me if im wrong
3. if hurley was given the Duke roster of the past 2 season, i expect 2 titles surely. jon is given all the resources and money, but he is just NOT a good coach, period. Duke and the big boys behind it put Jon in a position to succeed, but he is not worthy

anyway you can see my apprarent despise to this guy.. I think he lack the sportsmanship and is a hypocrite.. he lack the toughness and the courage to hold himself accountable

You ever had a really bad beat at work? I have. It sucks. I am willing to give Scheyer a pass on his press conference.

If Demary doesn’t get a fingertip on that pass and if Mullins doesn’t hit a 30 foot shot, the story is Hurley let his guards burn 18 seconds of clock just to get fouled with 10 seconds left. Then, down 2 with 10 seconds left, never fouled Duke.

What would Hurley’s post game presser have been like in that situation? What would this board have looked like this week if that had happened?

I’ve thought of all of this and it’s true. We probably “should” have fouled before Silas ever got to tip that ball. It was a perfect sequence of events. Just our time.

I do think the coaches shook hands. Scheyer headed straight toward Hurley and down the sideline at the end, but the camera cut away. It’s pretty clear in one of the many views that they were headed toward each other with purpose.

NY history instagram account I follow put a nice little ode to UConn and shot at Duke at the beginning of a video on the Duke brothers’ history in NYC. Super interesting account to follow and a little cherry on the top!

The Duke brothers got their asses handed to them in the 80’s in the orange juice futures market. They were never able to recovery financially and became homeless. I would say it’s a sad story about greed and corruption but screw all things Duke.

If an elephant ran on the court and killed Mullins before the shot.... what would Hurley's press conference be like then?

That is a silly way to look at it. Letting the clock burn on our second to last possession was a mistake.

Why was Scheyer having them foul with 10 seconds left?

Hurley tried to have them foul Sarr but he got rid of it so quickly Jayden only made contact with him after he passed the ball.

I view things differently than most when it comes to Scheyer. I keep hearing people in the media say he's a great coach and despite what happened here his national championships are coming. Windows for winning national championships can close quickly even at a place like Duke. They recruit amazingly well but these past two years he had players that don't come around often in Flagg and Boozer and he gave away enormous leads with everything on the line. He of course has the #1 recruiting class coming in again but it's nothing like what he had this past season or the season before. He'll get some really good guys in the portal but they aren't going to be the best player in the country like he's had the past two seasons. UNC hasn't been a contender with Hubert, that can change very quickly and other ACC programs like Louisville can and will rise up. Next thing you know Scheyer isn't rolling through a really weak ACC every season anymore and always getting a 1 seed.

The media assumed Calipari had college hoops locked down many years ago because he was getting every player he wanted and he would rack up national championships. His window closed.

This is right. When Kentucky won in 2012 there was plenty of thought, including here, that he'd retire with four or five titles, easy. He is very likely going to end with one.

Excellent post.

My guess is that Duke will retain Scheyer for as long as K believes he belongs there. Considering the number of final fours K went to before winning it all, it is likely that Scheyer will quite a bit of rope, but as his teams are very similar to Squid at Kentucky, there can always be a veteran team (that may have fewer stars) capable of knocking them off.

I don’t doubt that Scheyer has a very good basketball mind. I'll wager heavily that there are hundreds of coaches roughly his age at lower levels who also have very good basketball minds. Whether he can close the deal at some point remains to be seen as in reality there are very few capable of doing it (it is nowhere near as easy as we've been making it look).

One thing that has been lost from Sunday's game was that there were four or five earlier critical situations where we did not do what was needed (a rushed three by Mullins after a turnover in a situation where a score would have made the pressure on Duke unbearable, a miss on the first of two free throws twice, by very dependable free throw shooters). If we had at those points we well could have been in the lead with under a minute left with Duke scrambling to score to tie or take the lead.

It came down to coaching, mindset, toughness and will. Over the final six minutes Duke's approach was basically hoping the clock ran out beore we caught them. That's where the game was lost.

Fouling up 3 with 10 seconds or less is textbook. I don’t have a problem with that.

I think a lot of people think that because Duke lost and in a turnover and mistake heavy way they didn't play well/Scheyer didn't coach well. This is not the case. They ran pretty good sets and took high quality shots, shooting over 50% even in the second half. This Duke performance was very good, it's just that we did a pretty precise and surgical counter at the tactical level.

They had 10 turnovers in the last 23 minutes of game time and a lot of that was from cam. Late help bothered his passing and led to a bunch of these turnovers. he also got blocked a bunch starting with Reibe after the tv timeout late in the first half. Their offense just bogged down after we figured out how to defend him and it's a slow grind to even the game from there. By the 3 minutes mark in the second half it was basically an even game.

This type of micro in game adjustment to surgically target the (only?) weakness of their team is masterful. It's a high level basketball game that turned on concrete strategic decisions. The weakest part of the game is probably our shooting if not for that it wouldn't have been so close.
