Do this and get into a power 4!

well....I don't go back a decade...in the last three years...even in their two below .500 years...they are doing 39,000 or so..

They are comparable to USF, Oregon State, Cuse, Cincinnati, in attendance...and, last year in their 5-7 year.. higher attended than Duke, Wake, Houston, Maryland, Virginia, USF, SMU, Memphis, Georgia Tech, Boise State..among others
Yes and my point wasn't even about attendance. Every bar in town has the game on, everyone knows there's a game, even if you don't go, you're watching it somewhere. There's tailgating, parties, smokers in the neighborhood near the stadium, there's visitors in RVs showing up the night before or that morning. There's a vibe that UConn can't capture. Even the 22k in 2012, which is rock bottom, is more than any basketball game gets, and those certainly feel like an event.

I'm not saying all the parks around it need to be built (the ice rink would be nice, lol) but this could be done at the location of at the Sherman Sports field. Move the track over next to Edward Ice Forum, plenty of room in the field to the right (on Google Maps). You could cut costs by 250 million from the cost of Ryan Field several ways. As far as traffic goes, 6-7 days a year? Really? That's your big deal? Also notice in the video the things the town (Mansfield) would get to use the stadium for. Movie night on the field? Imagine the family atmosphere that would create!

This would be the dream.

Unfortunately, there’s no political will to spend money to do anything other than slap bandaids on our currently crumbing facilities.

The odds on us building a stadium to aid the P4 pursuit - zero. The odds on us building a stadium because we somehow got into a P4 - zero.

And in 2012 it was 22,000. Nobody went to games in the 80's and early 90's. They have had some good attendance years in recent years and some bad attendance years in recent years. The fans come out when expectations are high and they stay home when they stink.
how does this differ from any other program, UConn basketball included?

not sure where to stick this, but finding a conference and building a new stadium, is no guarantee of a successful financial future.
We may not be packing the rent completely, but we're also not embarassing the state with visuals like this.
I'm inclined to believe this article, given that it comes straight from the SDSU paper.

takeaways:
  • don't share a market directly with a pro team (check for UConn)
  • don't suck (check for uconn, though even at our worst we were getting not-embarassing-crowds to the rent - kudos to them)
  • be very careful on your ticket pricing strategy (not sure how we're doing with this)

No will is the truth. If there were, certain individuals would be hammering away at the situation in New York City right now and getting some of those businesses into Connecticut I won’t say anything further so that the post doesn’t get deleted.

Interesting article. I am not sure that sharing a stadium with a pro-team makes a difference for SDSU attendance. At least the stadium is being used more frequently and is a better investment.

The big payoff will come next year when SDSU is in the PAC!

I've never been to SD but I'd imagine there are many entertaining things to do. Gotta keep the ticket prices reasonable.

Went to the game - great tailgate, beautiful day and then went inside and watched complete domination. Crowd was into it and loud until it was out of hand.

It’s not on campus which obviously isn’t ideal for college, but if we ever get into a major conference with a competitive team the Rent will turn into a great NFL style game day experience. The tailgate scene is great as it is. Just hard to get amped up for FIU and the like.
If we ever get into a major conference and have some staying power I guarantee we end up with an "on campus" stadium. It might not be right in the middle of campus but it'll be within a mile (like the prison area)

What prison area is within a mile of the Storrs campus?

He’s talking about Depot Campus aka Mansfield Prison aka Mansfield Training School
Isn't that a protected historical site? That's why nobody can touch it with a 10 foot pole with all the expense that would go into restoring the buildings.

Large area of land. IMHO, there’s NFW a prospective stadium developed on land near the ex-Mansfield Training Facility buildings would incorporate buildings unoccupied for decades. IIRC, all are decaying structures and some are rife with asbestos.

Not sure, but it makes little sense to put a stadium in the depot campus when there are three potential sites on the physical campus.

The Rent is at the most convenient place in the State.
Absolutely! Well, except to the athletes, coaches, and students. To them it is decidedly inconvenient.

But really, why place any emphasis on them at all if it inconveniences people west of Hartford by making them drive an extra 30 minutes six times a year?

The Rent is at the most convenient place in the State. And the folks who give big bucks in addition to the legislature want it right where it is. It's not gonna change.
No shiite, particularly barring any currently unlikely newly reconstituted ACC or Big XII invitation .Point remains, a homecoming (key word) not located on an actual campus remains less likely to entice alumni showing up for any university alma mater. Football fans, and non-football fans alike. In particular, shockingly for out of state alumni less convenient to any CT location. /s

Yup, a significantly scaled back autonomous vehicle testing facility. Partnership between Guilford’s Promesa Capital and the School of Engineering for about 4% of the ex-training center facility’s 350 acres.

Originally proposed for 105 acres; dramatically scaled down to 15 acres. BoT agreed to sell the 15 acres in Sept 2024.

Even if they join a conference it ain't gonna change.

How many basketball games total are in Hartford? It is a business. They are getting paid. They will survive,

No doubt, but it is decidedly inconvenient to the coaches, players, and students. Both Hurley and Geno are on record as referring to play in Gampel.

Sorry, but do you think Mansfield will allow UConn to build an on campus stadium? Do you think Coventry will let the state expand Route 44? The traffic to Mansfield will be horrible. Mansfield will never allow it.

If UConn got an on campus stadium, what should be done with Rentschler? Should it be torn down or use as another venue? How big of a stadium should be built, if we got into the Big 12?

Now, one of the football site looks as if there is a subdivision nearby? I'm not sure if Mansfield citizens would let UConn build it in people's backyard.

Route 44 would be made into a 4 lane highway. Again, let's say UConn built a 55K stadium, the logistics of traffic would be a nightmare. I'm not sure if Route 6 (aka Suicide 6) from Bolton to Willimantic ever got fixed.

I'm still not sure about on campus stadium but I need to research it.

I think you're referring to the site in the athletic campus. There are no approvals needed from Mansfield Township for development at that site. So, while undoubtedly that people's republic of Mansfield could NIMBY to their hearts content, they basically be shouting into the wind.

Well, as I'm fond of saying, somehow pretty much every other FBS program in America somehow manages to get people on and off their campus for football games without building a super highway to the front gate. I suspect we could as well. People seem to assume that everyone in the football stadium would arrive at the same time and leave at the same time. That's not the real world. Tailgating allows traffic to be feathered in and out of the stadium over hours rather than all at the same time. That an intelligent traffic management would be enough to handle the crowd six times a year... just like it is it pretty much every other on campus college football stadium in America.

Rte 6 is definitely suicide highway. My cousin nearly got killed over there back in our college days. Somehow her entire car was totalled except for where she sat (driver's seat). She only suffered a leg fracture and a few bumps and bruises. (Thank God)
