Taurasi already shares the record for the most Olympic golds in a team sport, along with former teammate Sue Bird, with five golds apiece from Athens 2004 through to Tokyo 2020. However, by competing in her sixth Olympic Games this summer, Taurasi could extend this record-breaking run if Team USA wins gold in Paris, where she will become the athlete with the most Olympic gold medals in any team sport.

I don't believe the article is entirely correct. Swimming is considered a team sport and Michael Phelps has 7 gold medals from relay events. That stat may be limited to women's basketball only. Btw Phelps has 23 gold medals overall.

Most of Phelps golds are for individual and not team competition. I think that is the difference.

Swimming and athletics (track and field) may be team sports in the sense that you can keep a team
score, but really, apart from the relays, the athletes compete as individuals. Same for gymnastics,
diving, wrestling, etc.

I believe the common definition for 'team sport' is one in which more than one person is actively competing for a team at the same time - while relay races require multiple 'teammates', each team member 'competes' alone with the only overlap being the passing of a baton. In swimming there isn't even that 'overlap'. Gymnastics is an individual sport with team prizes.

At 42 years of age and having competed in 5 Olympics, it is time for Diane to step aside.

It is just plain greedy to stick around for 24 years taking up a spot on a 12 member team, in a competition that only occurs every 4 years.

I like Diane, loved her in her years at UCONN.

But, time to go......

Absolutely not. She's the GOAT, the WNBA logo is fashioned after her, and she's been giving to Team USA since she was a teenager. She has answered the call every single time they have asked and has been an incredible Team USA teammate and representative.

Greedy? Not even close. Not only was she chosen for the team, but she's still got "game". And in the all star game, was one of the only guards on Team USA who played well. Plum had a decent game and to a slightly lesser extent, Ionescu, but the rest of the guards were average to awful. You know who scored double figures? Stewie (31), Wilson (22), Diana (14) and Griner (10). Oh and Dee added 5 assists and 6 boards.

Diana turned 42 in July. Lebron turns 40 in December - basically 2.5 years apart. Where is the call for Lebron to hang it up? Is he being greedy? Should he be turning over the team to others who "deserve" his spot? Talk about a double standard.

I don't really care what you want to see. The Olympics is about winning gold.......
You correctly identified the key words, “used to be”. At least for us. Almost all of the rivals never had professionals....

AAAGH! what's the point.

The Olympics are different; only true sportsmen/sportswomen truly understand the spirit behind the competition.

Others, think that bag the gold at all costs is what it's about.

Nice! "Shan"

I guess my point is:
I would much rather see a team of relatively young players bring their skill, enthusiasm, exuberance and aspirations.

Rather than a team of older, hardened, egotistical grubbers.

The Olympics used to be about sportsmanship with an amateurish bent.

And, that's my two cents.
Hardened, egotistical? Why so bitter? She has every right to “try out” for the team…if the committee didnt think she brought value to the team they wouldn't have selected her.

That’s why the Russians, East Germans, and many others, sent their professionals, most of whom were on performance enhancing drugs, to compete for the true spirit.

The comparison doesn’t work too well from my neighborhood. We got Dee and you don’t. I haven’t gotten over the disrespect of and/or ignorance re Pistol Pete during the galactic celebration of Caitlin’s scoring achievement. If Dee coaches she may be winning gold forever !

Dee still plays the game at a high level, her leadership skills are clearly outstanding and, as the widely acknowledged “Goat” of the game, her presence will bring a lot of attention. I have no issues with her playing as long as she was picked as a legitimate contributor to the team, which she was.

Is there an argument to be made that older players on the cusp of their final decline, players who have already experienced a lifetime of exceptional achievement could/should give some consideration to stepping aside for the next upcoming transcendent talent? Sure! I like to think that, were I her, I would probably want to stay in a tie with my longtime friend and former teammate Sue Bird. However, that is not the choice she made and since she can still contribute at a high level, who am I (or anyone else) to say it’s wrong?

I will say that her whining about only having to answer the “old age” question because she’s a woman, is not a good look. LeBron has been asked the same questions and the last time I checked, he’s not a woman.
She would have done better to simply point out her obvious qualifications and left it there. She was chosen legitimately and with defensible reasons by the committee and that’s all the justification she needs!

Wow, from that interview I didn't see anything that resembled WHINING. She was respectful, calm, and I thought her answers were on point. I also believe there should be a limit on appearances, but as of now there isn't, so as long as she can still play like she has been, and the committee agrees, then who are we to say she doesn't belong. She is arguably the best all time player in the WNBA, so let's enjoy her while we can.

I saw a tweet and response regarding a different athlete which seems related. Someone posted that Simone Biles should step down and give younger gymnasts a chance. The response was “She does give younger gymnasts a chance — every time they compete on floor, beam, vault, …”

Now it is true that judges ultimately decide who wins in gymnastics. For basketball it was the Olympic selection committee acting as judges to decide who goes or not. In Dee’s case the judges factored in the experience and leadership that Dee provides (as well as her on court prowess) to give her the edge over someone like Caitlin. The committee’s goal was to assemble the best TEAM, not necessarily the collection of best individual athletes.

I miss your Clint Eastwood avatar...

Now that DT did not start in the first game in the Olympics, it may be foreshadowing the end of her run. However, DT still does ALL of the difficult hustle plays: steals, loose ball, etc., and the first big run by the USA happened when several "non-starters" were in the game [DT, BG] along with Stewie, Pheesa, and Plum vs. Japan [all three UConn women at the same time] for the first group stage game.

I believe Caitlyn Clark for Gray [or Loyd] might have been a reasonable swap, but DT does more in practice and on the bench to prove her worth than what is shown on the court. I did not see the "plus/minus" report but DT is showing that her selection was solid - even though only one game is under their "belts" in the 2024 edition.

I (for one) am happy DT is on the Olympic team for the sixth time, and that the WNBA all-stars beat the USA women's team, so they could be humbled just enough to show they still had "room for improvement" [the biggest room in the house - according to AE's mom].

I come to this party late. Diana is my GOAT. But this year I have had my reservations. She appears to be prone to nagging little injuries. I've got my fingers crossed. Putting another one in the win column will be a fitting tribute to my gal.

If an athlete is among the best of their sport then denying them the opportunity to compete makes the Olympics a restricted event and not what it purports to be. It would diminish the medal.
I go way back and remeber the Protopopovs, Russian Pairs Skating legends. The gold medal in pairs skating would need an asterisk on it's face if they were barred from competing and the world would have been denied the opportunity to watch genius on ice.
