I come to this party late. Diana is my GOAT. But this year I have had my reservations. She appears to be prone to nagging little injuries. I've got my fingers crossed. Putting another one in the win column will be a fitting tribute to my gal.
D is without question the GOAT of women's basketball and is still having an impactful WNBA season. But she has been a nonfactor for Team USA so far and will likely no longer be a starter or to see meaningful minutes which is painful to see given how great she has been all these years.

She will start out of respect and leadership all the way to Gold.

i feel sorry for people who don't -- or simply won't -- understand that basketball is a team game. a bunch of individuals usually won't prevail against the well-functioning team, even if the individuals are each superior in their talents and skills. the ability to play as a team is the overriding factor in competitions such as basketball, unlike golf or singles tennis, for example.

in basketball, having super shooting ability is coveted. but so is being a great ball handler, a fierce rebounder, being fast afoot -- or even better, quick. endurance is very valuable and having great basketball instincts and savvy makes up for many shortcomings. players individually possess different abilities in those areas. some might be shooting savants yet still be atrocious ball handlers who don't comprehend their defensive assignments. the team must balance the variables -- covering each individual's shortcomings and exploiting their strengths -- to be successful.

the ability to be a team's glue is also of extreme value. not everyone has that elusive, scarce quality. and a group of individuals is not going to succeed, in basketball, if they're not a team.

the glue, BTW, doesn't have to contribute anything else. it is the essence of the team, which will do what's needed to cover any lacking in the glue. it's what teams do.

As we anticipated, D did not start in the latest game and her minutes were relatively few when subbed in in the 2nd and 4th quarters. She hit one of four shots and picked up a few assists but in no way impacted the game as she historically has.

I expect that her minutes will continue to decline in the next two games if either one is close. This is sad to see for a player of her brilliance but inevitable all the same.
Duly noted. Thank you for your reporting on the issue. I think you've covered it adequately and we don't need multiple more posts on the subject. Just my opinion.
