Some thoughts on the DePaul game:
  • After rolling through the toughest part of the schedule at 23-0, UConn’s next 11 games will be all about fine tuning their execution so that when they get to the Big Dance the Huskies will be firing on all cylinders.
  • So long as everyone is healthy, UConn’s starting 5 appears to be set in stone. With the emergence of Allie, the regular rotation looks to be 9 deep, consisting of the most talented group of players in WBB.
  • As hot as she was on Sunday, Azzi turned up the thermostat to another level at the start of tonight’s game, hitting her first 5 shots including 2 from the arc.
  • When Geno started the 2nd qtr with Azzi & Sarah on the bench, I immediately wondered how long it would last…..68 seconds exactly. 🧐
  • I must say, I’m not really a fan of trying to feed the low post over the top, unless it’s from the high post. It works sometimes and it doesn’t work sometimes, like tonight for about 6 turnovers.
  • Sarah with another one of her quiet, stat-stuffing games: 16 points (6/9), 6 rbs, 5 ast, 2 stl.
  • I am amazed that KK can maintain her handle with a major tape job on her right hand, while shooting 6/7 from the floor.
  • Jana getting more PT is a good thing. The consistency will come.
  • UConn's offense was a bit sloppy. But DEFENSE travels as the Huskies held DePaul to 40 points on 28% shooting, with 12 steals, forcing 18 turnovers
  • Visitors on Saturday, so I will thank another BY’er in advance for starting the Butler postgame thread.

Azzi and Sarah did their usual awesome. But for me, Kayleigh, KK, Allie and Ash were the real show. They kept the game moving at a speed too fast for DePaul to manage. Result? A 46 point blowout. It's really striking how much this is a guard-oriented team.

Azzi had a very nice all-around game. Rumors of her shooting slump have been greatly exaggerated.

Kayleigh Heckel is such a gamer. So lucky we have her as a second point guard.

I don't like the size of the wrap on KK's finger, but she shot well in the fourth quarter other than the two missed FTs.

Agree with Oldude on all points, but especially about the ill-advised feeding of the post. Oh my!

Ash 37 minutes, Allie 27 plus. Sometimes I think he leaves those two in because he likes watching them play. I don’t blame him.

Speaking of Allie, 9 points with no threes. Really good floor game.

K9 continues to stack good games. 6 assists no TOs.

I choose to focus on the good.

Azzi was hot early, then the offense got sluggish in Q2. UConn forced fewer TOs than usual, hence a lower score and coming up short of the point spread. We aren't as good or dynamic without Blanca. I hope she'll be 100% soon. What's the story with KK's hand? We shot 61/50/50. Which of those was not good?

Shooting percentages were more than excellent tonight, wow!

Bit of a letdown of a game (as an audience member) from Sunday's game, but for the Huskies, it was just another day that ends in "y". You have to appreciate how consistent they are from game to game with taking care of business. Dare I say, it reminds me of Stewart's senior year ...

The tape job on KK’s hand looks exactly like the tape job you get when you jam or hyperextend your thumb.

Easy win with every body contributing. Uconn won all statistical categories. I am so glad Geno talked Azzi to come back for her 5th year. She and Sarah will led us to the Promise Land and all's well with Uconn. GO HUSKIES!!!!!!

It look like to me in the first quarter Geno called off the defense to back off a little bit and we got a little sluggish lost a little bit of energy and that was respectful for DePaul

I enjoyed Candace, too - thought she was quite gracious (obviously well prepared for it) with covering Geno and Uconn.

Last game I commented on how good the guards/wings had gotten at feeding the post, and they came out tonight to prove me wrong! The first half was full of really bad entry passes - bad angles, bad locations, and a lollypop or two to feed the defense. The post players and/or the DePaul defense were not making it easy, but don't throw the pass if it isn't open!

Another second quarter sleepwalk :-(

In general I thought it was sort of a low energy effort - at halftime DePaul had 7 O boards and Uconn only had 11 D boards. But DePaul also cleaned up their act - 10 TO in the first quarter, and then had 8 in the next 3 quarters.

46 point win, no injuries though I noticed KK had her right forefinger taped again, but also her left pinkie. Home for Butler on Saturday.

Sarah and Azzi put on a clinic as usual.
KK, Ash, Kayleigh and Allie were wonderful support in this game, especially their tremendous energy and discipline.
As Geno noted, the ill-advised post passes in the first half need to be cleaned up (& were better in the 2nd half). Being picky, I was also concerned in the first half with UCONN allowing quite a few offensive rebounds (actually, it seemed like one of those games where we tipped balls but didn't recover the majority of the ensuing loose balls) - the caveat being that we essentially had virtually no offensive boards because our shooting percentage was so high.
It was also disturbing to me that Serah and Jana had 0 rebounds in the first half.
Although Allie played really well, I thought that it looked like she was (understandably) not comfortable in her mask - I hope her injury is minor and she can ditch the mask asap.
All in all, mission accomplished in this game, and I hope that we can avoid injuries in our practices over the next month...

Sort of a meh game. The crowd had no energy and the big Q1 lead lulled the Huskies to sleep.
I'm glad someone else said it. Although oddly more energy form KK on the offensive end, which was quite nice to see.

I had the same thought. Still, I think it was wise to ease up on his players. There is a lot of time before the next big games and the slower pace allows the team to get my gametime with the half-court sets that will be more important at the tail-end of the season.

I thought Candace Parker was very good as a color commentator tonight.
Same here. She was gracious talking about the Huskies. I had to Google her to verify that she did indeed play for the Lady Vols. 🙂
