DePaul Post Game Thread

Taking away his best game makes his stats worse?! More breaking news tonight at 11.

I would argue the Texas and Butler games were both very good all around games. It's not all about points
I'd say for him, points matter. It's ok if he hasn't been great every game, it's ok. I promise. It's ok.

He hasn't been great every game, you might notice I already said that. But for us UConn fans we've seen a few good games. I know for non-UConn fans like yourself that's tough to grasp

Mullins is going to have a half where he scores 20 (or close). It will just happen because it can. They have been scouting this kid since he was a sophomore. The NBA knows what he is.

I agree. He's going to have a super explosive 30 point outing very soon. He scores in bunches in a really special way. Once he stops committing stupid fouls and learns the offense a little better, he will dominate.

Pickle juice supposedly prevents cramping. That plus electrolytes makes me think that either he was starting to cramp up or wanted to make sure that he wouldn't.
Maybe he got confused and thought he was playing pickleball instead of basketball.

Fell hard on his head - the Butler did it
Oh, but that wasn't an injury. Seeing how careful they are with head injuries these days, and how conservative the training staff is with injuries, if there was even remotely a chance Karaban was dealing with anything they would have held him out of the DePaul game. So there was no injury and you can't mention it in your post. See what I mean? Stewart's injury was supposedly legit but he was able to play.

Team will be fine offensively - not worried an ounce. It's actually a really good sign they are winning with defense right now. If I had to rank teams right now based on what I think they'll be come March:

Michigan - still obliterating teams (beat Lasalle by 50 last night). You just can't minimize what they are doing because you're a Uconn homer.
Uconn
Zona & Purdue
ISU
Duke

Michigan team to beat, UConn vs UM in finals.
what Michigan is doing is impressive. By any metric. Full stop. My only counter argument is this: we present a matchup problem for Michigan that is unique to UConn. That is the genius of the Hurley and Co. system. It is darn hard to guard us when you have not seen us before. And now that we are playing D at a top 10 level, I like our chances against anyone, including Michigan. I do not think this is homerism, although I am a proud homer. I think this is objective analysis based on the problems that we pose teams.

I have genuine concerns about the offense due to our lack of facilitators. Ideally our offense isn't overly reliant on point guard play and this year it is.
All due respect, but Demary is leading the Big East in assists per game and is #26 in the nation in assist%. Smith is a touch behind at #61. In 2024, Newton was at #49 and Diarra was #421

Like I put in my post above, some people just look at the KP ranking and overreact in one direction or the other.

The difference in offensive/defensive rankings is sometimes so small and teams can be so log-jammed together in the KP 7-25 rankings range that literally 2-3 possessions of variance (making vs. missing shots, the opposing team doing the same) is enough for your team to move up/down a few spots.

Like you've said, if you are paying attention watching this team and also take into context the fact that we've had a lot of roster variance, this team is WAYYYY better than KP #23 on offense. I'm a stats nerd and it's obvious to me.
Kinda like the difference between a slow start in the first 10 minutes, or playing with the efficiency they played with over the last 30 minutes (outscored Depaul 65-29), or the difference between being without your top scorer or not ??

Which is not to say that every team doesn't have those same issues

Still waiting for him to drop 10 3s in one game :) Well he doesn't seem to be one and done, so Im sure he’ll get plenty of opportunities.
...he said, after not reading the previous three pages of this thread

Makes me think of Bouknight. He scored 40 in a game and he was gone.

Yes, this is my point though. Out best teams spread the assists around. Castle, Spencer, Jackson, multiple facilitators. Mullins is under 1 per game. Ball is 1.5. Reed and AK both at 2 fortunately. We have enough assists per game at 18, right on par, but I'd like to see more guys involved. If Silas runs into a very strong defender, I'm worried where the assists come from.

I hear you, but we also have a backup PG in Smith who has about as many assists as Silas when adjusted for minutes played, we haven't had that the last few years. If Silas gets bottled up, Smith can either play beside him or sub for him and give his defender a different look. Also, even thought they may not have the APG numbers, several of the players on the team pass (no pun intended) the eye test with respect to being able to see and make good passes, and even Ball seems to be improving in that respect. I think Mullins will also as he integrates more into the offense, he's too smart and good not to, although his job is to score, not assist.
