Defense vs. OU | The Boneyard

Defense vs. OU

Oklahoma was 12-27 (44.4%) on layups. Was it good defense or bad offense?

I want to say at least 6 of those 15 missed layups were rebounded and scored on the same possession by OU but I'd have to watch the game again and count them.

Our defense was not good - it’s never good. Shooting percentage is one thing, but we fouled them like 22-23 times defensively.

However, watch our defense at 54-54 and 60-56. It was elite for two possessions.

At 62-56, it went back to crap. McNeeley, bless his soul, is an absolute disaster defensively.

Also at 56-54 and 64-59. Those were really good defensive possessions too.

But he’s trying to make up for it by never hitting a shot?

McNeeley seems like a good young man, I wish him nothing but the best at the next level, but am I the only one getting Daniel Hamilton vibes from him? Potential and the ability to get your own shot is great, but ultimately if you can’t hit friggin shots your career isn’t going where people think it is.

(And if he goes off for 30 on Sunday, I did my job)

Honestly I think Liam is pressing. His ex teamate is getting all the accolades and he wants to show people he is on that level. Add to that they are playing in the same building this weekend he wants some of that shine.

Truth be told I don't think he is mentally ready for the next level just yet. That play where it looked like he had the easy layup and gets blocked and he immediately commits one of the dumbest fouls you have ever seen shows he still has a bit of growing to do mentally

He has been pressing long before this game.

Plays below the rim like Daniel Hamilton.

The defense also kept them in the game by sending them to the free throw line 27 times and put us under real foul trouble late in the game

This has nothing to do with Cooper Flagg. Get a grip. Our team is asking Liam to play way outside of his skillset right now because we lack guards and creators. He's recovering from injury. There's no secret mental game on why he's missing shots right now.

Agreed.

But there are at least 2-3 times a game where someone (usually AK) has a somewhat open shot that he passes up which forces Liam to create as the shot clock winds down.

And when Reed is in the game we should be making a more concerted effort to play inside out.

Combine those 2 and prob 5-6 less forced Liam possessions and his body of work looks different.

Daniel Hamilton won't keep shooting 2-15 bricks when you have AK And Ball to take the shots too.

Unfortunately they hit their free throws well. It would work better vs Marquette for example. I don't feel like looking it up but I hope Florida FT % is worse.

We need to feed Reed more for sure. You've got a 70% walking bucket on the floor and he's taking, what, 6 shots a game? Half of which are from offensive boards.

Our team is running our motion at a snail pace. No hard cuts. No rim pressure. Nothing.

Give the ball to the most violent player on the floor and let him kill someone at the rim. OU had NO ONE to check him and Reed spent half his time p$%@@footing around on the 3-point line allowing their bigs to zone up

This fan base is unbelievable.

At the moment we are still breathing, something that more than 90% of the programs in D-1 cannot say. We also are champions for at least another 16 days.

For the time being, focus on the positives. When the season is over there will be plenty of time to rehash the things that didn't work out as we hoped or expected.

We did good job of contesting both threes and lay ups. They missed bunnies because for the most part we made them tough bunnies.

I don't think he is 100%. He doesn't looks as nimble or strong on his moves to the rim as earlier in the season. But there is no reason he can't have a 10 for 16 game next time out.

There’s one thing that I really do not like about his game…..he has an awful habit of floating into the right corner and just standing there. No motion, no nothing.

It gums up the offense in two ways. One, he’s not moving, so there’s nothing to break down the defense and two, no one else can go there so solo and Alex are now working with like 75% of the space they could be using and they become easier to defend

Maybe he's doing that. But my guess is that is not a choice.

59 points is the least amount of points Oklahoma has scored in a game since they lost to Iowa State 58-to-45 late last season.

Last night was our most impressive defensive showing since the Villanova game and it feels pretty awesome being able to ride that momentum into tomorrow's matchup.

I think that too. And that play was the poster child. But how many times has he driven and lost control of the ball? He has a ton of talent but he is very unpolished. He is also a bit on the heavy side. He is a guy who would benefit greatly from another year in college. I doubt he makes that choice, though.

I thought the overall D was about as good as it has been this season - I know that isn't a terribly high bar but I thought they looked good, I mean we just don't have the guys to shutdown someone like Fears this season so you have to work within that context.

I think Liam's leaning too far into AK's mentorship and is borrowing his shooting slump now that Alex doesn't need it. Hopefully he pulls out of it tomorrow and shows some fire not frustration.
