The million interviews with Hurley talking about three-peating was fun but I get the sense from Hurley on down this team loved the smell of their own farts the entire off-season. The sum is shockingly so much less than the parts.

Our defense is atrocious, you simply can't win games with the defense we play. The staff probably should've focused on defense while they were busy perfecting the offense. The offense is also a huge mess but nothing like the D.

Hurley has no clue what his rotation is. He had Mahaney and Nowell playing together. Then at one point he went with no guards. He stressed all off-season and up until today that the strength of the team is our great wings. What does having depth at wing matter when you play Liam the whole time when he's hurt and missing everything and you have Jaylin plastered to the bench. Jaylin gets the short end of the stick every game. He got four seconds of action in the second half and missed a shot before being benched. How dare he miss a shot.

Solo can shoot threes, that's it. He's a huge liability on defense and does nothing other than shoot threes on offense. Hass plays his heart out but he's meant to be a backup point guard/energy guy off the bench. Karaban looks great if he's hitting threes, otherwise he's a ghost. Only thing Samson is good at is alley oops and blocking shots but he usually fouls on his block attempts. Everything else is a liability with him. Jaylin is inexplicably in the doghouse. Ross and Mahaney provide nothing. Where was Tarris Reed?

The last two years were amazing but Hurley probably needed this humble pie. Something miraculous has to happen or this team isn't making the tournament. I'm already at peace with it. I didn't think we would win this game going into it but the way we played leaves a very bad taste.

On to Thanksgiving, enjoy your Turkey and ketchup.

Perfect.

No notes.

That was even more inexplicable than Jaylin being glued to the bench. I'm used to Jaylin always getting the short end of the stick but benching Reed felt like Hurley forfeited the game.

I have no clue what he's doing with this team.

Hopefully he is using game film to justify shortening the rotation.

I don’t think it’s any certainty that we make the tournament. If I had to bet right now I would say we do not. We severely overestimated our talent. We have shooting, but no athleticism at all
I don't think anyone is saying it's a certainty, definitely not me. But we've had exactly 0 practices since these flaws have been truly exposed. I'd like to see what happens with that before I say we're missing the NIT and say Dan Hurley is a bad coach

We all know what we signed up for with Hurley but we really miss the calmness of guys like Newton and Castle to balance it out. This years group is more of a reflection of their coach and the theatrics after every single whistle, legit or not, is embarrassing.

They were clearly frustrated in the second half. I suppose 60 hours in hell will wear you down

Hurley has to stop his infatuation with small undersized mid major guards. Let’s not forget he almost made the same mistake last year with Nick Timberlake. Cam Spencer saved his bacon. No more undersized mid major guards!

No one should be a Hurley denier.

BUT

He’s clearly had a bad few months with putting this team together and coaching them.
I guess that’s if we truly felt we were a top 2 or 3 team in the nation at the start the season. The first 4 games showed me we had no dominating player, and the hype fell into the polls. This team just doesn’t come close to passing the eye test right now, and didn’t to start the season either.

But this looks like a very normal underclassman led team. Karaban is still not showing he’s physical enough, and we haven’t done anything good in terms of giving him(or anyone) spacing down low to go to work…

I expect it to look very different by January/February…the question is, will it be too late?

McNeeley is a freshman. It happens.

Solo was abysmal. Alex has to be better.

All in all this falls at the throne of none other than Dan Hurley. All of our issues were classic cases of poor coaching. Idk what they’re working on. This team doesn’t need to master Dan’s elite offensive playbook. They need to learn fundamentals.

Dan shows passion and enthusiasm and people say he needs to be neutered. Dan neuters himself and fans say he needs to coach better.

He needs to be himself.

He also needs to stop overthinking this. Stop playing Johnson, limit Solo’s minutes, and increase Nowell’s, Stewart’s, and Reed’s minutes.

Yeah that is baffling. No way we should of been out rebounded like that but when Samson is your starter, Karaban another average game even though he scored and McNeeley hurt I guess that explains it. Might as well play Isiah Abraham at this point. Wasn't he know for being a great defender coming in. He has the body to rebound and play D.

I thought he would be right as he’s been right for a lot of things, but having zero defensive presence at center and no point guard is a fatal flaw of this team
I understand what you mean..but the lack of a center presence is being exacerbated by the utter lack of perimeter defense…late switches, long rebounds, etc…no excuses for the guys, but it’s all a self fulfilling prophecy right now.

We are doing things poorly in a compounding manner.

Today was the first day I really concentrated on Ball playing defense. Wow he is a total mess. He never pressures anyone and then when the guy drives he tries to let him go by for the block but let him get too much ground and he and he can't do anything. He helps on defense when he shouldn't and doesn't get back to cover the man he left. He is just doing everything in like 5th gear. If he wasn't making shots he wouldn't be on the floor.

He’s borderline unplayable which is scary because he’s not even the worst perimeter defender on the team.

This.

I think things can be fixed. Starts at the point with Nowell, his time is now.... earlier than anyone planned but Mahaney is a 2 Hass is a 6th man game changer. This season can be corrected but A LOT depends on the freshman.

This is the only silver lining in all of this. We've not had any practice time for the staff to fix the glaring issues on this team. This is not to say that I expect them to turn this team into a national champion contender, that ship sailed when they decided on the roster construction. But before I start worrying about making the tournament, I want to see how this team evolves over the next 15 days.

I’ve never asked him to change his sideline behavior. But this team is clearly poorly prepared at the moment. Thats coaching. He’s a hall of fame coach. He knows he needs to be better.

And with Cam we stuck him next to an All American PG who averaged 6 asts a game, a top 10 PG recruit who can also get him shots, the best stretch 4 in college hoops, and a generational big man.

We didn’t ask him to carry an offense as a PG.

But something something something. Positionless basketball

Whatever the coaching staff is showing these kids isn't working and their evaluation of this roster was way off. Time for the staff to have a huge evaluation meeting and the team just has to relearn things.Need to go back to the fundamentals of defense. .Just not playing as a team, all positions need to be up for grabs.

Well. Thankful for 6 championships and two back to back. Forget about this whole tourney. I think this team will be good. We were demoralized by two losses by 3 points total and lost confidence and steam tonight. Not an excuse but it happened. We’ll be better off for this with all the hot air we had built up.
