And Jim FosterAnd Muffet!
And Jim FosterAnd Muffet!
I'm not sure how many of you are parents, but I have two kids in college and have spent an awful lot of time around young people in the last 20 years or so. About 10 years ago, i was at one of my sons' middle school (7th-9th grade) soccer games and was sitting in front of a group of cheerleaders for the other team. You should have heard them talking to each other about " this" and " that". Another time, I picked up the headphones for one of my kids online multi-player games and got an earful of 4 letter words. When they were in high school, I was quartermaster for the marching band and spent hours upon hours with 100 high schoolers and, wow, salty doesn't describe the words used. These are all good kids and good students, from good families. It's how kids talk. Swearing and being "cool", I guess you'd call itc is just a ritual of youth and I'd bet a lot of you under 60 grew up doing exactly the same thing years ago.
My point is that the players already use that language so they aren't being shocked or corrupted in any way by the coaches. But we're not talking about youths; we're talking about grown-ups, specifically coaches who should be role models for their customers, i.e. the fans, not a small number of whom are youths. Its not tolerated for teachers, why is it necessary for coaches?
Sonny44, we're wasting our time pointing this out. It's obvious that most of these people give coaches a pass on their crude communication skills because after all.. they're coaches. And the bigger the name, the bigger the pass because they're perceived to be more successful. It's necessary for these coaches to use this language to let everyone, especially the players, know who's in charge. And of course it's easier now than in the past because, after all, it doesn't bother the kids. They think it's cool.
I think you are mistaking statements of fact (Geno & Dawn use salty language) for agreement with (People must be OK with this) giving them a pass as you call it. Geno and Dawn are not "perceived" to be successful they actually are successful-among the best in their field. Could they be as successful without using salty language? Probably. Would many of us prefer if Dawn and Geno didn't use salty language? Yes we would-as many have already said.Sonny44, we're wasting our time pointing this out. "Youths" is a non-gender indicating word.My point is that the players already use that language so they aren't being shocked or corrupted in any way by the coaches.
Do you have the same objection to coaches using four letter words around male players?

Of course not because foul, crude, vulgar, and profane language = salty. If it were as acceptable as some of you purpose you would not have to make up a cover-up word like "salty" as a substitute for "foul" or "crude" or "vulgar" or "profane".
just like in your profile pic?one time, I was playing a pick up game on the west coast, drove in for a lefthanded layup with my right elbow swinging to keep defenders away. Guy looks at me and asks, "you from Philly?" Yup....
Because we don't think it's as bad as you do, apparently. If it were as acceptable as some of you purpose you would not have to make up a cover-up word like "salty" as a substitute for "foul" or "crude" or "vulgar" or "profane".
I brought it up a couple times. I definitely think there's some paternalism going on, you know, protecting the poor, innocent little girls from the bad words that might scar them for life.why hasn't anyone thrown out the "PC" card yet? lol
There is a legitimate discussion to be had here about language - and there is an interesting discussion to be had about coaches, coach/teachers and teachers... and it applies to swearing - and also to misogynistic, racist, sexist and bigoted language.
Like the team Geno doesnt pick his assts. the committee does.Geno gives his share of input and opinion but doesnt pick players or coaches.Neither does coach K.Well, Auriemma must disagree because he keeps choosing her as an assistant for international competition.
Lots of coaches curse at the refs. On all levels. JC did it. Sometimes they deserve it.

It's also poorly coached. So, shouldn't refs curse at coaches?I think this is much to do about nothing, personally I give these coaches a lot of credit. The women's game is poorly officiated and that has been the case for years. an expletive every now and then should be expected.

She has been involved with them for years as a player and coach.Great point. So, not only does Geno respect & want Dawn at his side, USA Basketball respects her and see her as an upstanding example of USA Basketball....
