Is anyone Surprised, I'm Not Tyasha Harris selected as the winner of the 2020 Dawn Staley Award

Tyasha Harris from South Carolina wins the Award.

Eerily similar to when Tiffany Mitchell won in 2015 over IMO more deserving winner in Skylar Diggins or UConn's own Moriah Jefferson.

Tyasha had a great year, but not as good as Sabrina Ionescu had.

Skylar Diggins graduated in 2013, but an argument could be made for Moriah Jefferson in 2015.

I’m sure they gave this to Ty because she had a great season leading a bunch of freshmen to a 1-loss record and I don't know who gets to vote on this award, but they probably voted to give something to Dawn’s team since they couldn’t have the tournament this year (and they likely would’ve gone pretty far if not to a NC).

"The Dawn Staley Award

is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country; a player who exemplifies the skills that Dawn possessed during her career (ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win)."

I'm not one who has been singing Ionescu's praise, nor do I think she's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I do think she's been the best player in college basketball this season, and therefore the best guard. Looking at the criteria that the award posted, copied above, she clearly had a better year than Ty Harris, unless the nebulous "will to win" is weighted more than the other three put together. This is taking nothing away from Ty, who had a great year in her own right.

Any award with Sabrina as a candidate that doesn't award her the award is just another popularity award not a merit award. I truly don't think that WBB fans do not believe that Sabrina had a great season and career. I mean how could the consensus POY not win the awards that she is in contention for.

BTW, this is just my opinion and am not a Ducks homer or fan. Just trying to tell it like it is.

I guess the selection committee thought that the Dawn Staley Award is supposed to go to the Gamecock's best guard of the season. There is no way she was a better guard then Sabrina.

I'm okay with Harris winning. She should've been a 1st or 2nd Team AP All American and played a more pure PG role than Sabrina, so this might make up for being snubbed by AP voters. Sabrina is going to clean up everything else.

:eek:People are overlooking the obvious. Sabrina was too tall to win this award. Just look at the past winners
Asia Durr, Kelsey Mitchell, Kelsey Plum,. Head bang

She was a finalist this year. The group of winners is so strange though. Durr nor Mitchell were distributors, they were scorers first and foremost. Plum did both. Harris primarily a distributor. Not sure what the criteria is for this award.

I think they’re just trying to spread the wealth around. Last year, KLS dropped to the AP third team after being on the first team the previous two years. She was 11th in voting however. Kristine Anigwe made the AP second team over KLS. When the WBCA handed out their awards, KLS made the 10 member team cut while Anigwe didn’t. Anigwe did win the NDPOY award though. I always wondered if that was done on purpose to also spread the wealth around.

Would have been interesting to see what Ionescu’s assist numbers would have looked like in a pure PG role.

Fair point. Honestly theres no question Ionescu had the better season so she probably deserved it (if she isnt a candidate for the SG award). That said, I like that Harris got this to make up for the AA snub. 3rd team AA isnt enough of an individual honor for the season she put together leading SC.

.-.
She’s a really good player, but are you arguing she’s a better player and had a better season than Sabrina?

Stats wise Ionescu is head and shoulders over everyone. I’m very appreciative of her triple doubles and the history she made this year with 2k,1k, and 1k. So yes I do think she did have a better season than Ty, but I also think what Ty did can’t be ignored. Became schools all time assist leader and led her team to a 32-1 record and #1 ranked team. Ionescu will likely clean up the rest of the awards anyway so I definitely think Ty deserved this one.

After a little research, these awards should be essentially meaningless since no one knows how to properly categorize players. Look at the finalists:

PG:
Rhyne Howard
Ty Harris
Sabrina Ionescu
Cheney Carter

SG:
Kathleen Doyle
Dana Evans
Cheney Carter
Aari McDonald
Haley Gorecki

Who the heck decides these finalists? Why is Howard in contention for PG role and Doyle/Evans up for SG? And why is Carter on there twice? And why did two shooting guards who are not distributors (Mitchell/Durr) win the PG award previously? This is so sloppy.

There is no collegiate guard better than Ionescu right now. But I don’t think she cares about this award, so...

it’s not different than college football where someone can win the position award or the Maxwell and then lose the heisman to someone else at the same position.

it’s all silly.

Sabrina should’ve had a clean sweep of all the pint guard awards since she was the clean npoy.

Question: How can a third team AP All American wind up as the winner of an award as the best guard in the country over a first team All American guard who set an All Time record and is a sure thing National Player of the Year? Answer: Play for the coach after whom it is named and who clearly has a lot of influence in the selection.

She won the award because she deserved it! Period! If you don’t like too bad so sad.... Don’t be bitter it's really not a good look.
How many triple doubles did she have as the PG? Who had the highest Assists per game average?

Sabrina

PPG---17.5
APG----9.1
RPG--- 8.6
T/O----2.9
SPG----1.6

Tyasha

PPG---12.1
APG----5.7
RPG----3.5
T/O----1.9
SPG----1.6

Both had the same Assist to Turn Over average of 3, everything else Sabrina cleans her clock and both are the same height.

That's like saying Michael Phelps shouldn't have won 8 gold medals in Bejing! Doesn't matter how many.......... it's who was best!

I don't think it's possible to have a stronger "will to win" than Ionescu.

The only reason your team was ranked #1 was because they lost 1 game and everyone else with 2 losses or more expected there would be an NCAA tourney which was supposed to decide things. Great that you beat UConn at your home court by 18 with your 18K fans rooting your team on. Sabrina and the Ducks beat that same UConn team a week earlier by the same amount in Storrs where 10K fans were rooting against them. Staley didn't let her team with senior guard Ty Harris play Team USA while Sabrina and the Ducks figured out how to beat them by 7 with Sabrina's scoring 30 against WNBA players. Of course that game didn't count.

I truly wish the National Championship had been settled on the court like its been the last 50 years. But to use the rankings vote as a rationale why Harris should win an award is ridiculous. To me this is an embarassment to SC and Dawn Staley that her player got this award. Rhyne Howard (SEC POY and 1st team AA) was even more deserving than Harris, but Sabrina should have won this if anyone wants the Dawn Staley award to mean anything in the future. It's hard to respect Dawn Staley for letting this happen.
