I am pleased with those posters who resisted the urge to dump on Dawn and the Gamecocks. I hate eating CROW or GAMECOCKs at seasons end so I too shall resist the urge.

Oh, what you said...bad, bad! Now, if you really want a hoot click into the video of her presser on the right side of the article page. She's a long way from getting where she wants. Obvious the chicklets are running the barn yard. Wilson is not playing defense and doesn't know what it is to start??? Whose fault is that! Ditto according to coach on Wilson's tag team playmate about defense. They are big, slow and lazy. Who is to blame for that?

Be careful, Rock. Last time I called Wilson "big, slow and lazy" (last summer), some folks around here darn near vapor-locked! Btw, I totally agree.

How can any one spend all the USA coaching time with Geno and not GET IT"?? Osmosis --says you just have to stand next to the source while it is emitting and the good stuff will pass thru to you. Was she standing too far away?? Let us not count Dawn out just yet.

Not counting her out. Recruiting all these transfers is risky. Looks like she's going down the same path. Time will tell. Btw, using your osmosis example, Cinncinati and Temple would be Top 10 teams.

So why aren't they???
Dawn was a HEAD Coach prior to becoming an assistant/associate with Geno in the USA's
As such you (Maybe not YOU) would think Dawn would be their trying to learn what Geno knows and how to defeat his teams. Proximity would have been a better term than Osmosis which few actually understand.
I agree with what you say.
In my Barn yard comments on the GAMECOCKS I said: Don't crow too loudly --then I said CxOxCxK (read between the X's) your brains---which is like readying your Rifle or a dog tilting his head--it was changed to ROOSTER. I guess they thought that a male appendage and offensive 000so GAMEROOSTERS should be the name of USC team.
It was automatic so it's programmed to do it I guess. However I thought that really funny

Sometimes we want to act like players aren't human beings, who don't have feelings and opinions and can't read and don't watch TV. These are young people, they knew they were playing the 183rd ranked team in WCBB. Every game isn't for the Natty and the season is a marathon not a sprint. No team in CBB has ever lost a Natty in November. The armchair analysis pf Dawn Staley and her program is hilarious. It's difficult to get your team up for the 183rd ranked team in WCBB, no matter who it is. They won going away and in the final analysis isn't that what matters most. When South Carolina is in the FF, which they inevitably will be along with UConn, ND, and the yearly Cinderella, no one will remember or care that they played a lackluster game against Clemson in November.

iamcbs - Of course these players are human beings who have feelings. I must have missed something because I have not read any posters implying that.
So they had an attitude (a poor one) about playing the 183rd ranked team. Does that give you any indication of their mindset? Of course it does. Did you see the Ohio State game? Top team--marginal attitude. Clemson - again with the attitude. Are we hilarious because we see (and Dawn sees) a pattern!!! Here is some info you might know, but forgot---Last year Staley said she wanted to be cool with the kids. She played around and horsed around quite a bit with them on and off the court; a little too close to being a buddy rather than a coach IMO. She mentioned then that the players DID NOT respond the way she wanted during some practices. That was an indication of something developing that wasn't very positive or on the road to a NC. Guess what? It is still here and may be worse. That is not armchair analysis or Monday morning quarterbacking, that is critical thinking and seeing the reality of a situation.

In regards to SC going to the final 4---yes, they have the talent to get there. They have so much talent (and they know it) that they can coast. They can turn it off and on at will against 368 teams. But not the best 5 or 6. Geno knows that if EVERYDAY, EVERY PRACTICE, & EVERY GAME is lived to its fullest the relentless intensity is ALWAYS there. Where there is constant striving for improvement--then it is instinctive and automatic. Turning it on and off is not conducive to winning it all.
And winning the game IS NOT what matters most to me or to Geno or to lots of other people. Playing well and competing to ones best abilities is what is important. I have seen SC, Ohio State & Tennessee play and they are similar in that the players are more important than the coach. They run the show and decide on their effort or who goes one on one next. Muffitt, Mulkey, and Geno are running the show. I have not seen Baylor yet. At this point I consider them a threat, bigger than the rest. When I see them play then I will re-evaluate. Like Ohio State--I was concerned a little. After Geno and the team rocked them with the zone----Ohio State is not a threat to UConn this year. Sure SC can improve during the year, but they have to come a longer way than other top programs.

I didn't see the game so I cannot really assess it. Too much talent would never be a problem for Geno (Christine tracking minutes , yes) . With Geno you play full out or you sit. Top stars, highly recruited stars have sat for Geno..

If you want a laugh look at my previous posting where I say---Don't crow too loudly the word ROOSTER was substituted by the BY program for the second half of Gamecock
Rooster your brain--just doesn't come out the same as your brain. Really funny!!.

Poor Dawn. Great player, super recruiter of talent, solid coach; but she just doesn't seem to get it. You gotta have some players who will "grind" every game. Stop falling in love with all the "athletes"...get yourself a couple of ladies who will police your team. They don't need to be able to "run fast/jump high." You need leadership on the court.
Great point---- they had Welch last year who played every second like her last play. She was their real leader! Mitchel should have been, or should be the one to fill that role.

Have you had a CAT scan lately??

Actually, I like this response from Dawn - I could easily imagine Geno saying it. First of all, it's honest - it's not BS coachspeak, pretending that everyone is above average and it's a wonderful world. Second, it speaks to the mystery that is coaching a collection of college kids - they aren't all alike, one size doesn't fit all, each team and each year has a different dynamic. It also implies - correctly, in my view - that all the onus isn't on the coaching staff to make things work. Part of the job lies with the players, and, at least early in the season, a veteran coach will give them some rope. Geno has mention, if memory serves, there's been a couple of seasons where he's let this sort of dynamic play out, and then has had to use the "nuclear option" of taking over, and uniting the team in their dislike of his approach. Not his preferred method, and not Dawn's either, I'd guess.

When you are responsible for a product and that product under performs and you are asked about what happened, the manager (coach) doesn't say, "I have no idea", unless you follow it up with, "But, I'm going to get to the bottom of it". Do that in business and they'll find someone else pretty quickly.

Her answer implies that it isn't her. All of her prep, practice, motivating, and in-game coaching was as good as it could be. So if it isn't her, then that leaves the players, and I'm no fan of the bus approach to explaining away poor performance.

Worst case: some her players most talented players have not (at least in the last game) ceded her the control that a coach playing for an NC needs to have to win.

There is another thread about the little things that Geno does that sets UCONN apart from the rest. The list is rather long as several posters contributed to it.

I see that Dawn, and yes I consider her a very good coach, has not done some of the little things. Geno will never allow the rolled over waistbands on the game shorts. Dawn does. This is an obvious one. I'm sure there are others that involve social media and the like.

I have seen Dawn bench a player for lack of effort yet. But in last year's game against us neither Coates or Wilson were very impressive - my opinion.

It does not look like they have a leader on the floor this year or that the play hard on every play.

Maybe are favorite Gamecock poster can lend us some insight into what may be going on.

Dawn knows exactly what the problem was last night - they played down to their competition and were thinking about the trip to L.A. this weekend and the beaches of Waikiki after that. She's using the media to try and get through to the team that you have to bring it every day. I hate to admit it, but I have the same problem with some of my employees calling in sick too much. Tiffany is too quiet to be the vocal leader on the court that will get everyone in line. This team doesn't currently have a clear leader on the court. If someone grabs that role by the horns this will be a great season. If nobody does then it will simply be an above average season. I think Khadijah Sessions is the most likely player to do that. Maybe Asia Dozier.

BTW, I wasn't happy last night, either.

I think part of the lack of motivation was playing in front of a tiny crowd when the first 2 games had almost 17,000 and almost 14,000. There were barely 1000 at Clemson last night in their high school gym that their WBB team is using while they renovate Port-a-john Coliseum.

Thanks Leghorn. I knew you would be able to shed light on the topic.

Can't wait for February.

February will be fun; I'm looking forward to our games against UCLA and Arizona State in the coming days and then Duke 2 weeks from Sunday at home. When is your next big game?

Notre Dame on Dec 5. We play Kansas State, Nebraska, Chattanooga (25) and DePaul (26) before that. No tropical islands this year.

By my recollection, it has taken Coach Staley one season longer to take South Carolina to the Final Four than it took Geno to get UConn there. UConn was a Cinderella, South Carolina was a favorite. Four seasons later Geno won his first National Championship with an entirely new roster, Coach Staley has a couple of All Americans on her squad this year, and likely will have one for the next couple of years. I think she's doing pretty well, and has a chance to get her first NC faster than Geno.

Let's not forget who beat UConn in their first Final Four, and took Tennessee down to the wire (a three point win in OT) in the NC game. I think she knows something about basketball.

It would seem to me that the kids who want to stay local (for the sake of being local) may have less of a personal commitment to be great. The teams getting great talent from far away have kids totally dialed into hoops. gabby and Kia didn't come here for the weather. Well, maybe Kia did. But they are 100% committed. But perhaps her kids are not completely bought in yet.
You are barkin up the wrong tree and rehashing an all time great myth. Kids that choose to stay home want to be as great as anybody. Consider that the challenge of staying home and elevating a program is greater than going to an established program because if you fail it is your friends and family that will be sitting in the front row. The Phillydelphia in Dawn guarantees you that every player on the SC team has "bought in"-well before they sign their letters of intent. 'Buying in' has nothing to do with how far away you are from home. KLS is from California, Former UCONN player & CT native Sadie Edwards is now playing in California. If it was ever about the weather then University of Hawaii or Miami would be top destinations.
