Yes, I'd much rather have a brand than a bunch of national championships.

I think you are lost, and clicked on the wrong message board. The proper place to post this sentiment is syracusefan.com . It is repeated over and over and your post will get 100's of likes.

See, you have to have a brand, and you have to have a solid conference affiliation. It's the only way you can attract top recruits and great coaches and, you know, win national championships. There's no other way.

You guys are being way too hard on Patrick. IMHO ... he is a fantastic actor! Adam Sandler always assembles the best actors ... just look at that star studded line-up of Rex Ryan, Tony Orlando, & Patrick!!!

* EDIT - Wait ... Dan Patrick does radio? What station is he on? Does he still work with Keith Olbermann? Those guys were great together back in the 90's .... maybe I'll give him a listen ...

One thing I've noticed recently is how poorly informed most sports media people are about the APR ban, the Nate Miles recruitment, Calhoun's retirement, etc. I guess I really can't blame them since if you're not a fan of a certain program this stuff is complicated and going on all the time. But when they talk about their opinions on things, like what Bazz said after the game about the ban, and they're killing UConn because they have no idea what happened it's pretty annoying.

For example on Sports Nation on ESPN the other idea they disapproved of what Bazz said and Max Kellerman says, "Hey kid, it was your fault you didn't get to play in the post season last year." Totally missing the point of what Bazz was talking about because in fact the players on the team last year and this year had nothing to do with the reason for the post season ban. Totally pisses me off when they spread this stuff without knowing the facts.

Am I missing something? From what you say Gottlieb was pro UConn on the APR, but now you like him less?

He went to OK state, he brings it up every 5 minuets.

Gottlieb being anti-UConn is a myth. Outside of the Scoe comment a few years back he has been fine. Just because an media member says something negative about us does not mean they hate us, it is their job to give an opinion. It is crazy that people forget this.
No Patrick. Gottlieb was shouted down by Patrick. Dan Patrick sadly he thought he was brand and the market showed him different.

Just called out the UConn men's program again on his show. Stating that he was getting killed on our boards(the boneyard) for saying that we don't have a brand. Then went on another rant on how we have no brand.
He was saying that we're too up and down. But mentioned the Likes of UNC and UCLA having a great brand. Those programs have been way more up and down than we have over the course of the last 15-20 years. What about Ray Ray and he got game? Rip Hamilton era? Ben and Emeka era? Hasheem the Dream Thabeet as the most dominant defensive player in his era? now the Kemba and Shabazz era? All the classic moments in the garden: 7 Big East titles, 6 OTs vs Cuse, Kemba with the step back game winner, 5 games 5 nights.

Unfortunately you can't argue with Ignorance!

Several years ago I read this this great quote on the BY, not sure who posted or I'd give credit. Different topic but same kind of nonsense occurs far too frequently.

The brilliant black writer Thomas Sowell said,
"It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance".

Of the 350(or so) D1 men's college teams how many have a better "brand" then us? We have to be in the what top 2 percentile? I guess that is not well branded enough?

People know our brand, kids (majority of which are from the inner city) come here to become men, win championships, develop their skills and to prep for professional basketball. Ray Allen, Kemba Walker, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor, Rip hamilton, Donny marshall, Shabazz napier are synonymous with our brand. What university has put more character guys in the NBA over the past 20 years than us? What university has done a better job developing talent, taking 2-4 star prospects and turning them into legitimate NBA talent?

Agree with everything you say. To clarify: you're preaching to the choir. Yutzes like DP either have an agenda to stir things up or are just plain stupid. One can't argue in either case and expect any form of satisfaction.

I worked at ESPN when Dan Patrick was there..he was a complete a, same with Stu Scott (it is Giff-Ie, not "Griffy"). I was maybe 23 at the time, and Patrick waslked around like an arrogant . While I don't agree with much of what Mike Greenberg says about college basetkabll, he is actually a nice person and didn't treat the underpaid ESPN underlings like . Anywho, f Patrick..he's on NBC Sports TV. I may be the only subscriber to that station.

Its best sometimes to tell idiots that they are right and move on.

When you argue with an idiot what does that make you?

With the exception of the recent ship game he picks against in every round.

I used to be a Dan Patrick fan, not anymore.

A few thoughts though:

I'm not sure what he means by "brand". UNC and UCLA have been NCAA men's hoops powers for decades, we have been better recently. It will take time to get the kind of brand they have. We have won 4 of the last 16 men's titles with two different coaches, I think that is good enough.

The women's program is the gold standard for all other women's programs right now. No other women's program has a better brand than we do.

The football team doesn't have a brand, it will take time and success before it does. We've had a lot of success since our jump to FBS, but it has been overshadowed by the last few years of futility. The school needs to trumpet the successes of the last decade, not the failure of the last few seasons.

There are lots of P5 schools that don't have any "brand" in any sport. I'm really not sure where Patrick is going with this line of thinking.

So did Bilas, but Bilas picked against UConn in the championship game too, IIRC.

I don't mind Gottlieb's analysis. He was an all assist, no shoot player. That has carried over into his analyst career in that he is able to see things that others can't. He can get whiny but I think that is just the way his voice is. I do mind when he is required by his job to opine on violations, given what is in his past.

I confess I've gone down the wrong road too many times....easier said than done. You sound like my wife. Thanks for the reminder. ;)

I find Gottlieb occasionally insightful and usually a bit annoying. And yes it's a combination of the whiny thing and the preachy hypocritical attitude you cited.

However he's not dumb nor uninformed which is more than I can say about most sports talking heads.

Some food for thought Mr. Patrick should chew on. The Dallas Cowboys are the biggest brand in the NFL while the patriots are far from it. That is all.

Under Calhoun, we were a program. Now, after a 'ship with a new coach, we are a brand!

We were under dogs in every game but 1, but sure that means he hates us.

It must mean he hates UK too since he picked against them in the title game.

The media should stop picking games since for some reason people think that picking against their school means they have an agenda. It is laughable.

DP is just upset he's about to get replaced by Josh Elliott on Sunday Night Football. He's washed up.

Dan Patrick is yesterday's news. Yet another old white liberal sports personality who likes Springsteen too much.

I can't believe Gottlieb actually said that. I have never heard him say anything remotely pro UConn.

Jay Bilas said something like "The NCAA was absurd, gauging academic health through APR is liking gauging health over how tall someone is."
Bilas said that? Dang, like that guy a lot...

Bilas is often critical of the NCAA and Mark Emmert. The two got into a Twitter war earlier in the season. Emmert basically conceded to Bilas' basketball knowledge but claimed he can't run a complex organization. Apparently, Emmert is unaware the Bilas is a member of the North Carolina bar and a practicing lawyer. Dude is smart.

Dan Patrick is a terrible human being. I heard, second hand (from a good friend of the jilted), that he stiffed a guy that built a deck for him. Told him to sue him for the money.
