Creighton vs SC

I think that if the referees call a tight game then that would help Creighton.

I doubt South Carolina has seen a team that shoots the 3 as much as Creighton. Against really good perimeter shooting teams, South Carolina seemed to struggle a bit defending the 3pt line. Missouri and Stanford both went 7-15 from 3 against them. If Creighton can find a way to muck the game up inside like Missouri did with smaller players AND hit the 3, there’s a chance.
You picked 2 games out of 30 plus to draw that conclusion? Stanford hit 6 out of 11 in the first half. Half of the shots there was nothing you could do about it. The second half Stanford got shut down completely. Stanford went 1 for 4 because SC started running you off the line and ramping up the defense. The Missouri game was just a bad game all around. If we have one of those games, we could lose to Creighton. The fact is if you pull up all the stats amongst the major conferences, SC has the #1 ranked 3-point defense across the board. The only schools ahead of SC are small schools. That being said, Creighton will be a challenge from that standpoint.

Does Creighton have any shot against mighty SC today. The easy answer is no way SC by 25..However they are very well coached and run a nice offense If they can take a page from Mizzo and pack in the paint and make Henderson and Cooke beat them and run their motion offense like they did against Iowa and use up a lot of the clock then somehow hit a high percentage of their 3's then they could pull it off...that's a lot of if's but as they say "that's why they play the game"
I think it’s unlikely that SC wins by 25. Creighton’s style and tempo suggest a much closer game, perhaps 12-13, unless Creighton can continue to make shots from the perimeter. If they do, the game could be very close. A really good shooting performance might even produce the upset.

Unless S.Carolina’s guards step up, they are most definitely vulnerable. And I just don’t see that against a harassing defense. Still, substantial favorites but surely vulnerable.

They have a chance only because they are in the game. No one ( particularly UCONN fans ) is not shocked that they made it to the elite 8. Certainly, they did not show that level of talent our games with them. Or was it that game where CD's last minute drive to basket won the game for us? We had no chance when we played SC, although that was light years ago. But I am in the camp that says " reality will bite today." Creighton will realize how far from the very top they are, despite a record-setting season. South Carolina will never trail and the game will be over early.

.-.
No. Even if they shot 3's at a 55% clip they will still lose. They will get out rebounded by 20 rebounds and they can't stop Boston. They don't have a prayer of stopping Boston even if they double her all night. They matched up well against Iowa State...etc. Those days are now over.

I said in a previous thread that’s I’m hoping for a some 2013 Louisville-Baylor magic for Creighton. If they are going to let SC play bully ball, Creighton needs to bring the same energy Louisville did in that 2013 game

A defense that was ranked 184th in Scoring Defense, 257th in FG % Defense, and 300th in 3-pt. FG % Defense coming into tonight's game? After playing the 32nd ranked NET, the 36th ranked RPI, and 55th ranked SOS schedule this season?

UNC was supposed to have a decent defense. They held South Carolina to a full 2 pts below their season average. With SC shooting 33%.

Missouri was out-rebounded by 10 rebounds by South Carolina, 47 to 37. They had 6-4 Ladazhia Williams and 6-1 Hayley Frank as starters, and rotated 6-1 Kiya Dorroh and 6-1 Sara-Rose Smith into the game. Creighton starts 6-1 Emma Ronsiek and 6-0 Carly Bachelor, with 6-1 Morgan Maly and 6-0 Mallory Brake as their tallest reserves. Missouri was taller than Creighton will be, even without Aijha Blackwell playing.

South Carolina took 18 more shot attempts than Missouri did, and made 4 more completions. Missouri had a 43.1% completion rate to the Gamecocks' 38.2 %. Most of the Gamecock's misses were from the 3-pt. line, where they were 6-21. Missouri was 7-15 from the arc. But that 1 extra point for the Tigers against 8 extra points for the Gamecocks in additional FG completions did not win them the game. It was the 8 extra free throw points they got by going 13-16 at the charity stripe, compared to South Carolina going 5-9. South Carolina was called for 15 fouls compared to Missouri being called for just 11 fouls. 8 pts minus 7 pts leaves 1 point in favor of Missouri, and they won 70-69.

Now, will South Carolina be called for the majority of fouls in tonight's game? Will the decided size mismatch in the paint towards the Gamecock's appear too bully-ball for the officiating? Will Creighton's players suddenly find themselves being whipped and lashed about on the court as if by a EF5 tornado? The Gamecocks bigs will have to be wary of this phenomenon. They can't get into early foul trouble, and nullify that clear advantage.

But regardless of how poor South Carolina's offense is, it appears that the Bluejays' own defensive liabilities may assist the Gamecocks in this area. And the Gamecocks come into the game #2 in Rebounding per Game and #1 in Rebounding Margin, while Creighton is ranked 190th and 85th respectively. The Bluejays will NEED to have a strong offensive efficiency outing against a very tough defense - perhaps not as harassing as Creighton's - but still a proven defense (3rd in Scoring Defense, 1st in FG % Defense, 18th in 3-Pt. FG % Defense). I think odds are more stacked up against Creighton than they appear to be against South Carolina - their strength goes up against strength, while the Gamecock's weakness goes up against a greater weakness....

SC played SD early in the year.

I still don’t think South Dakota’s offense is exactly like Creighton’s. Sjerven plays a pretty significant role in SD’s offense attack, Creighton doesn’t necessarily play through a post from what I’ve seen.

Yes, because out of those 30 how many of those games were against prolific shooting teams? Surely, you aren’t insinuating SC guards the 3 well because they held other poor shooting SEC teams to sub 20% from 3. Whether Stanford was “shut down” from 3 or not, there still is evidence that SC struggled guarding it lol. Stanford’s offense is also different from Creighton’s. Whether Missouri was a bad game all around or not, it still adds to the point that SC had problems defending against a 4 to 5 out offense.

Do I think Creighton will win? Probably not, because they don’t have the size and refs are blind to Boston’s fouls. But their style has proven to give SC issues in the past.

Has Creighton tried a zone defense; I have not seen the whole game? I would try a box and one, also. Not a fan of doubling or triple teaming Boston. Better to pressure the guards on the perimeter. I mean, it is a difficult task, because SC is just better at every position. The idea of packing the lane and let others beat you, will not work, because there is a misconception that SC players can't shoot from outside. Not true, especially when they are open.'

All in my amateurish opinion.

Well....Creighton is down 30 with 8:13 left. Their ship has been taking on water since the first quarter. The clock has struct midnight for Cinderella. That game is over. :( Creighton was never in that game.

1. Do the refs call SC for fouls?
2. Can we score against a SC defense that is allowed to "play"?

No and no.
Refs: We do give SC total 10 fouls even all 5 starters only have 4 fouls. What you want us to do better?

Lilliputians not given a chance by the officials when they were already at a big disadvantage in the land of the giants?

SC wanted to send a message? Doesn't work that way.....different matchups and now a different UConn team.

Such a fun ride. Ran into a brick wall today, just out of our depth in size and athleticism. Couldn't get anything going.

Such a fun run, our first time playing with these types of programs and knocking off two top 10 teams to get here is nothing to sneeze at. A good soph class that should stick around, hopefully, this can help recruiting and keep us as a tourney regular going forward.

In the meantime go win another title UConn!

Good run. Nobody expected you guys to make it this far. You guys did very well. One heck of a run. Something to build on for the future. Plus, you guys have one of my all time favorite coaches on staff; Coach Connie Yori. Great basketball mind!! Love listening to her talk about anything! She is awesome!! Great people.

UConn has to take care of business with NCST first. Then if they prevail, Texas or Stanford. Not too worried about SC at this point, although I agree that as an exercise, UConn matches up better against SC than Creighton.

Joseph Vaszily was a referee in tonight's game. I consider him bad for the game because the way he calls games. Allows obvious contact, tugging and violations with freedom of motion, but is quick to call questionable 3 second violations, questionable travels, questionable moving screens etc. Definitely favors "tough" play in the women's game, which I personally do not like.

He has officiated 3 of UConn's 5 losses this year. Also officiated a few of our bigger wins, and the near loss to Depaul (Caroline's last second basket for the win). In 2019, officiated our final four loss to Notre Dame, I believe.

It is not like he purposely hates UConn, let's be clear. But, just like people talk about how teams "match up" with each other; UConn, for some reason, does not "match up" well with this official. I dread UConn has him if they move to the final four.

I counted four clear fouls (uncalled) against South Carolina in the first four minutes. I turned it off after that.
SC didn’t need the refs help in the game, but they sure got it. Very one sided terrible job by refs. Is it too much to ask for consistency? Call it loose or call it tight, just be consistent…and call both halves the same. Yeah, I know, too much to ask.

You are dead on with him. He has not been kind to us. It really is a combination of issues. First, our offense goes from very good to horrid when we face physical teams that aggressively pressure the ball and grab or bump anyone in the paint. Second, our defense relies on forcing bad shots and getting defensive rebounds. When we get a ref that doesn't call any contact in the paint other than touch fouls on shooters, we are in trouble.

So, yes, the refs absolutely matter. But it would also be nice for the program to figure out how to score and rebound against teams like UCF and South Carolina.

Creighton ran a very good offensive scheme in the 1st quarter. If they hadn't missed 4 layups they would have been tied or up after 1 quarter. Left them in a hole they couldn't dig out of.

Officiating has been bad overall. It's bad to actually miss calls, but it's really bad to call fouls that didn't happen. I have seen multiple examples of both.
