Dorka was really great. She played so big. Caught passes in traffic, really tried to finish through contact. She hasn't really found her touch from outside but it doesnt really matter. All American Aaliyah was great as well.
I thought Lou and Caroline got good looks but couldn't convert. But the fact that they both had double figures is a good sign imo.
This was just about as impressive as the Duke win. this was a classic UConn win. dominated a ranked team on the road with seven players, down their best (2 really). I don't think other programs do stuff like this.
We went with our strength. Dorka is rebounding like every ball belongs to her. WOW! With this being only her 5th game of the season, she has shown incredible growth with both bigs being complements to each other. If Amari can join the rebounding party, our front line will be difficult to handle.

I've lost all objectivity about her as I think she's great and I may just be making excuses for her in my mind.

But I think she's just missing. Not just her shots (and some of her misses are absolutely defying the laws of gravity) but in every other aspect of her game. Beautiful passes just barely tipped, rebounds she's perfectly positioned for and tracking that get barely finger-tipped away from her, tough passes to her she just can't quite get the handle on, foul calls against her that aren't even close enough to be phantom! These close plays, over & over, would frustrate anyone and that frustration is compounding her lack of progress.

If she were just getting luck of the draw on some of these close plays I think it would have a huge impact on her confidence and overall positive attitude and I think her game would soar.

But despite all that I think she's making a decent contribution, as a Freshman and under difficult circumstances. I think her minutes are positive and we'd be hurting without them. I'm just not seeing the progress I expected: from marginally contributing to becoming a major asset.

I still think that's coming. This season.
Seems like Paterson is several layups away from being an important piece of our team. It should happen soon. Would be good to see her really elevate on rebounds and move more toward the ball on passes to her. Her game needs more passion. Perhaps this is due to her playing quality minutes with proven players that she is deferring to too much. Hope the coaches can change that. Both she and Caroline need to slow their game down from 120 MPH to 90 when shooting.

One thing I observed that I haven't seen for a while was the quietness of the crowd. That was a sold out arena, and from the opening tip til the end, it sounded as if there was no crowd at all. They came to see their Blue Jays beat up on UConn for the first time, but nothing at all went their way. For the entire game you could hear the players talking to each other on the floor, and the crowd, gosh, I almost felt sorry for them. The camera shots showed people just sitting there, stunned in what they were seeing. Even in our hey days when the home people knew they were going to be blown out, the crowd was more active and into the game. The old UConn way and I loved it.

The Huskies performance should put the scheduling nonsense to bed.

It was a very good performance against a team that seemed out of their comfort zone on their home court for whatever reason. What I liked most is that Huskies stomped on them early and then continued for the duration of the game, never letting up.

A 20/20 game from AE...double awesome. And Dorka was only 2 rebounds for another 20/20 stat line

I thought Caroline had a solid game defensively and with a little luck could have scored more. I think she's continuing to get her game back.

We just had a better game plan. They had no ability to stop our bigs.
For someone like Caroline Ducharme, I would have thought she would have been able to put a 20 points game easily, especially given the amount of minutes she played. Missed several bunnies. Something is still just night right with her. And now with that knock in the side of her head, having ab big ice pack placed on it, is a big concern. I hope and pray that she can finally snap out of it, this team needs a healthy and fully productive Caroline Ducharme to win it all this season

Dorka was down on the ground a bit more than I'd like to see. The first time (after the nifty pass from Nika) it didn't seem so bad. It kinda looked like she was slow to get up because she was taking the opportunity to rest a while. But the other two floor visits did not look so pleasant. The one where she fell and a Creighton player fell on top of her, I thought she might have badly injured her lower back or hip. She seemed to be grimacing in pain when she went to the free throw line. And the one where she went to her knees, it looked like she again hurt her back. Maybe it is just me being overly sensitive, but it seems she has been through so much and I just want her to remain healthy for the rest of her UConn career.

This game was a great example of the maturity of this year's team:
-Instead of the normal fast break points, Huskies got the ball inside to Dorka at exactly the right spot throughout the game. Great use of mismatch. Rarely did the half court offense bog down.
-Edwards got her 20 rebounds by going over, under and through Creighton without her normal offensive foul or 2. Totally under control the entire game.
-Althought Caroline and Lou had off nights shooting, both played strong defense and got their points via drives or backcuts. CD in particular seemed gased as times but never stopped moving.
-While Muhl was hacked throughout the game, for the most part she stayed under control and did not retaliate.
-Did not like to see Muhl's head hitting the floor, Caroline taking a hard elbow to the head, or Dorka rubbing her hip and back after falling on it for what seemed like the tenth time, but you never want to teach a player to be less aggressive.

I agree with you. What Browns notes is that some players have prior awards and greater name recognition, which help them for current season awards, but I would hope that voters would focus on the current season only. It should be noted that neither Aaliyah Boston nor Haley Jones leads their team in scoring. Cooke and Brink do.
Boston doesn't hav to lead her team in scoring and she will still be the NPOY..even though I think Clark should get it..same goes with Haley Jones..she does so much more for her team than scoring..my point was that someone would have to have a really down year to bounce them down from 1St team AA..considering these girls are some of the best in the nation it seems unlikely this would occur..I do agree that AE is playing like an AA like we all thought she would last year and hopefully this will continue for the rest of the year thru the Ncaa championship game

The box score said there was only 2336 people there with a capacity of 2900 although at the start of the game I expected more crowd noise

Aaliyah with 20 rebounds...Dorka with 18.

I wonder if a UConn duo has ever had that many in the same game?
Perhaps Lobo and Wolters?

Sure hope all the ice pack and bumped around players are ready for Marquette.
Somewhere in the last couple of days I read that Geno said that Aubrey 'might' play on Saturday.

UConn came out and threw the first punch. Creighton never recovered. UConn kept punching the whole game.

Aaliyah and Dorka were monsters in the paint. Both with double/ doubles. Creighton had no answers.

Excellent defense keeping Creighton just outside their comfort zone for shooting 3's. Creighton did have a very poor shooting night.

You could see in the 3rd quarter Creighton was frustrated and hanging their heads.
When you get in the 20s for two items, it should have a different name, such as a Double Double, or we could just term it an "Aaliyah"!

Aaliyah just continues to improve and impress and that deft move with the left from the right side of the lane was just a Wow.
I saw the same thing you did. Aaliyah has been feasting on that right side baseline drive. When Ronsiek closed off the baseline I wondered for a second if Aaliyah would pass it back out. But she gathered herself without hurrying, pivoted left and went around her to score. Wow, indeed! That was an AA level move. Both efficient and effective.

On the unrelated topic of AA voting, I’m no expert and have no inside info, but from what I’ve seen the voters seem to like surprising stories. Same with NPOY voting. That’s how Paige won two years ago even though Clark had flashier stats. Every one of the voters will have all the stats in front of them with the players ranked accordingly. And each of them will look for other factors so as not to merely vote according to an abstract list.

For example, even if Boston’s stats aren’t the best, if she is dominant in the head to head games with her rivals, she’ll get the nod and deserve it. We’ll play SC soon enough, and if Dorka doesn’t have a great game against Boston head to head, she won’t get 1st team AA honors. Same for AE: if she dominates against rivals, like Morrow, Amihere or Saxton, she’ll get recognized. If not, not. She may not get a chance to go up against all her rivals. But she already dominated against Czinano, Hobby, Boyd, Jones, Moore, Brown, etc. I think she has a good shot.

Her shot was off slightly- some of her 3 point tries went in & out or were just a tad strong. She is getting closer. I loved the pull-up jump shot she had in 2nd quarter. If she can develop that consistently, it will add to her arsenal.

I am gratified that they achieved a win with only 7 players. I expected 20 points from Lou but I am glad that the ball was shared with Edwards and Dorka. I do hope that the healing process will continue and that little by little, our injured players will rejoin Team play. Good words for Ines and she is a very good find and this is proving itself in BE play.
I would have said Lou was key until I saw the pregame on SNY. Kara Wolters called it, she said she expected huge games from both Aaliyah and Dorka.

1. Did anyone see Ines switching on the perimeter. She was really playing D. I think she has got it. With our limited amount of players and up by thirty would love to see her run the offense. She looks like a quick learner. Nika is always getting bumped and banged. Its a long season.
2. Edwards mid range has made her unstoppable. If they layoff her she hits those shots with consistency. They come up on her and she drives around them. Always making moves in the low post and not just straight up like her first two years. AP will learn just like AE has.
3. Dorka played like a real post player. The high low game we are developing will take us a long way.
I agree with you about Ines. I know the Geno can do no wrong folks will not agre withme, but in a blowout game like last night there is no reason to risk injury to our engine while leaving Ines sitting on the bench for all but a cup of coffee. With no other back up PG Nika needs as much rest as possible and Ines needs court time to learn and improve. It's interesting that CD used Ines much more in the SH game than Geno last night and I think Ines did just fine against the Hall.

Ines got stitches in her nose after getting whacked in practice. She may have been played sparingly to prevent her getting hit again so soon

Ines went in to the game injured. I didn't quite catch want happened but someone said Ines was sporting a "massive" bandage on her forehead. I heard a later comment about "several stitches". I thought that was in reference to Lou but I suppose it could have been Ines.

I think Alan said Lou's name in error in a conversation about Ines.

Haley Jones is not having a first team AA season.
I can't comment on that because I've only seen Stanford play 3 times..i do know everything goes thru jones and even though I'm not a fan Brinks seems to have stepped up her game ..of course she's always in foul trouble..as great as AE is playing she is really aggressive but not picking up the silly fouls she has in the past

I don't think it's a matter of snapping out of it..I just think she's not healthy enough to play like she did last year..she certainly doesn't move well at all on either ends of the court

One thing... regarding one previous AA... I have always liked Haley Jones and wish she had chosen UCONN instead of Stanford. But, as far as AA this season, her numbers are way down..
12.7 ppg
7.1 rpg
3.9 apg
48.4 fg%
15.0 3pt%
These are NOT AA numbers at this point in the season. She has time to improve them, but its going to be an up hill battle.

I was concerned about playing Creighton, I think they are ranked 21st, and UConn playing without Fudd/Griffin.. Dorka and Aaliyah were great, Nika was her usual upbeat player and our defense was really good.
Lou had trouble finding the basket, plus she was guarded well/when Azzi returns it will help Lou's offensive game.
Caroline hustle and showed sign of getting better.
Well said. I was worried about this game against Creighton as well, especially after hearing that we would be playing with only seven players. We dodge a bullet because Creighton could not hit the barn with a baseball. Holy smokes! Someone posted that they were shooting 15% from the field and an eye popping 5% from three-point land. That helped a lot.

As for our beloved UConn squad. Hats off to the defense, especially our halfcourt defense. I like to say that our defense was the reason why Creighton had an awful shooting night. Defensively, it looked like we were applying enough pressure on three-point line, trying to run them off the line and from getting comfortable looks from the line.

Offensively, Aaliyah just continues to impress! From her playing the passing lanes and getting steals which lead to breakaway layups, her post up in the lane, and her improved defense. She continues to play some outstanding basketball. Keep it going, Aaliyah.

Dorka: Another solid game from Dorka. Loved that she used her height and size advantage to just dominate the lane, much like Aaliyah did. Loved that she did not just jack up 3-point shots. We all know that she can shoot from deep. But she played a smart game yesterday and continues to play impressive basketball.

Nika: Is there a Most Improved Player Award or You are so valuable to the team award. OMG! Nika just continues to stake her claim to the point guard position. Each game her decision making gets better and better. Her shooting, once suspect. I mean really suspect, now causes a defender to actually think twice about playing off her. Nika's court vision is wicked! There were some passes that were sweet!! Like nice dimes! Great work, Nika!!

Caroline & Lou: I just love watching Caroline play. She can do wrong in my eyes. Just glad that she is getting better each game. Just love how she is not afraid to rebound. Hope that she is okay. I saw where she had an ice pack on her head. For Lou, just a natural competitor. She tried to get a few charges in the game. Not many players put their bodies on the line like that. Lou does it with ease. Sure she did not get the call a few times but she was still trying to take a charge or two. Love that about her and her shooting.

Ayanna and Ines: These two are going to great additions down the stretch. Ayanna is getting the minutes and her confidence is there. She is going to be special. Same with Ines. These two players are going to help the program a lot this season and going forward.

Great win, UConn!!

Except for the first quarter against Stanford the Bluejays basically played them even up for rest of the game, outscoring them 49 to 45. Also, @Urshurak and @cferraro04 the game against Marquette this Saturday is at Gampel not in Marquette, so there is no "on to Marquette".;)
I watched the game 10 rows from the floor. You read a box score. I said in an earlier post, that Stanford could have picked the score. We have eyeballs, so we can make observations and we can analyze what we see and we can come to valid conclusions. Creighton can be heralded for a team truly reaching its potential last year. It’s a delicate formula. Partly, they are not playing as well, partly they do not have a positive attitude, and partly it is other teams learning how to defend them. Geno and Tara took away their open 3’s. All outside shots were contested. They cannot take advantage of inside action, players have no skills to finish inside, so teams are just covering the 3 point line.

I'd say, these are not 1st team AA numbers... yet. But if she's widely perceived as being the key to Stanford's success in all sorts of other intangible ways, she will still get some support.

BoneDog, it really is about the role Haley plays for Stanford. A quick check of her career numbers at Stanford shows she's right about where she was each of the past several seasons.

For those who doubt Jones' bonafides as an All-American, they should watch Stanford play... I realize we don't get a lot of chance but games can be found after the fact on YouTube. Unfortunately for Haley's rep this season, she made a couple of mental errors at the end of the Cardinal's game vs. South Carolina and they likely cost Stanford the game.

Still, if I were to pick my ideal team from amongst this year's WCBB players, Haley might well be in my starting five, at least in the rotation. One needs to see her play to appreciate all she does.

It's always a tough task to weigh the Joneses of the world with those who have eye-catching stats like Caitlin Clark and Maddy Siegrist (both of whom I'd also gladly have on my team).

How about those three, plus Aaliyah Edwards and either Cameron Brink or Aliyah Boston? In addition to all of their other talents, that'd be a team with five really strong rebounders! And yup, there are plenty of other worthy contenders, including Azzi, pending her physical status.
