Creighton Post Game Thread

Started Ross the second half and sat SB. Team responded, went up 7 in the first 4 minutes of the half. Hurley puts SB back in for Ross and the game falls apart almost immediately.
Yep as another poster pointed out not sure why Ball deserved all those 2nd half minutes. I thought Hurley learned from the Providence game that Ball becomes a liablity when he isn't hitting his 3s/

I'm sure Karaban has probably played a worse game in his career but I'm having a tough time coming up with one.
He was so SOFT on defense.. It was like he was thinking “what can I do to make it look like I care about playing defense but really, I don’t care….”

It was worst game I’ve ever seen him play.

The over the top fawning over him has never been a good thing in several respects, I've commented on this many times in the past. He's a great role player but he's been playing the last two seasons like he has the weight of the world on him and he's been trying to do things on the court he actually can't do on a basketball court.

This talk that he's an all-time great Husky, that he's going to lead them to a three-peat and now three in four years, that he's a player of the year candidate/first team All-American candidate, calling him Captain America, constantly saying that everything changed for UConn basketball when he stepped on campus, we're lost without him...

It's ridiculous expectations for a great role player who can't back up any of it with his game. It's also disrespectful to Clingan, Sanogo, Newton etc. and players who were a lot better than him under Calhoun.
Karaban is shooting 48% from the field and 42% from 3 this year. He’s had some bad games and some good ones and has made a million big shots for us, as always. He’s jokingly called Captain America by some because he’s the clutchest player on the best basketball program in the country—not that difficult to comprehend. He has obvious flaws but this is a weird post considering what he’s given this program.

Solo ball is the problem.
Solo ball’s defense is THE problem.

He’s the worst starting defender since Antoine Anderson.

And if he is only shooting 30% from 3, he does us no good at all.
Yep I think we all see this as the problem but I think Hurley doesn't want to lose Ball if he ends up benching him for Ross or even Smith.

This is an insane take.

Smith shouldn’t be in any conversation.. he makes me miss Mahaney… At least Aidan makes FTs.

Yeah we just love our weave offense at the top of the key and settle for a contested 3. Or we do have Demary go inside but always looking for a tight pass to the bigs and never looking to just look for his own offense. I'm getting sick of this boring offense. No wonder fans have a hard time getting excited about this team.
I agree that there has to be a driving component but who?

"Off" is one thing. He was definitely that. He also played with oven mitts on his hands and got absolutely flambeed defensively. He looked like my dad trying to stick with some of those shooters.
And that's what I was saying in my first post in this thread. If he is that hurt, he should have been benched a lot more.

I hate this crusade. Everything did change when he got here. He is an all time great Husky.
And I really hate this crusade. Enough already, it hasn't been beneficial for AK and it's a slight to the all the players who were much better than him.

He was the 6th best player the first season he stepped on court with his team and a much better player stepped on the court alongside him as a freshman that season.

He's definitely hurt. I admire him trying to gut it out. But he hurt us more than he helped tonight

After the 2024 championship there was a lot of talk about the Stewart,Ross and Ball taking over. How would you grade that class?

Another thing that bums me out is that there's been no progression from Jaylin, it's now at the point where it's regression. He's a really great kid and he showed a lot of game when I watched him in high school. He was all over draft boards early in his UConn career and now he's just a spectator whether he's on the bench or in the game.
I said it a few weeks back but the lack of development from the remaining 2023 recruits is severely limiting the team. When you go into each game playing Russian roulette with 3 of your top 8 rotation players, it's hard to perform at your best on a consistent basis.

What hasn't been beneficial to him? He is 116-25 as a UConn Husky. He's still being mocked in 1st round drafts. He has 2 national championships in which he was credited by his coach and TEAMMATES as the coach on the floor. He has the most wins in UConn history. What is this praise he gets that you say he hasn't earned? This is a weird crusade by you. You're upset a the most decorated player in the country is getting praised as such. And why is praising one player a slight to another? That's a you issue man.

10 pages already. welp, I'm not doing that to myself

To all the people saying we need more athletes...that's only true to an extent. We need players that fit our system.

Last year we had the wrong PG transfer for our system. This year we literally got the protypical PG, but we've stuck ourselves with a plodding low to the ground 5 who eats the majority of minutes.

I like Reed, but he is not the fit for us offensively especially, and he's just ok in our defensive scheme.

Offensively he clogs up the interior rather than creates space. You know, the offense KNOWN for movement through such space. The second basket tonight was Silas to TR on a nice pick and roll....easy. Did we do it any other time this game? Yep, Reed fumbled it on the way up.

The Silas and TNew mold works. We know this moving forward.
We need a rim protecting, PNR lob threat big man, who can also pass out of the high post. It's clear watching how little Reed moves without the ball. The combo of Solo moving half heartedly and Reed not moving at all is a major reason our offense struggles for consistency.

If it feels like we are grinding gears, it's because we have a couple of square pegs for round holes.

I am a believer in this team, because the sheer talent. But Dan Hurley has to make some uncomfortable personel adjustments.
